Gotcha, thank you for the info. Really starting to think I should pickup a backup unpatched Switch tablet now before they become too expensive. I didn't know the future was so potentially grim for the newer models
Yea, buy an original unpatched model if you want hacks. You won’t have to wait, it’ll be alot easier, and you’ll have more control over the system.

It really isnt too grim. Just be patient and something will eventually get released. Hacking scenes consistantly talk about how it's going to take twelve decades until a hack is released if ever and etc. Ive been in the PSP, Vita, PS3, PS4 3DS, and now Switch scene. I will tell you that no matter what if you're patient and keep it on the lowest firmware possible for your uses you will be able to hack it eventually
I wouldn’t hold my breath on anything coming anytime soon (outside of the <=8.0.1 homebrew stuff).

I currently have a hacked Switch, but the concern is that it seems to be getting a bit hotter than usual. It made me start thinking that if it dies on me within a couple years, and if the new ones aren't patched, will it be really hard to find an unpatched one without spending gobs of money?

I ended up grabbing an unpatched backup on eBay this morning (just the tablet) for $160 and it is nearly mint, so I will just keep it in case my Switch does go. Or re-sell it if I don't need it

Quick question - the backup I bought is unpatched, but I didn't ask about the firmware version because I read that it doesn't matter as long as it is unpatched. If the firmware is on 9 when I get it, I can still mod it with Atmosphere right? Or does it need to be on an older firmware version to mod, and then update with ChoiDujour?

Ah, I dunno if they’ll get much more expensive in the future, maybe a bit, but there are like 20 million in existance :P. It getting hotter could just be the thermal paste getting dry, the factory paste isn’t great and doesn’t last for ages.

Sounds good :). I also have an extra unpatched console that I have in case something bad happens.

As of right now firmware doesn’t matter, Atmosphere currently supports everything from 1.0.0 to 9.0.0

Awesome thanks! And whoa, I didn't realize there were so many in existence. I was guessing like 2 million, was way off.

And yeah I was originally planning a thermal paste change for my current one. I have a small bit of experience with it (did it with a laptop and my PC), but I was reading about people who've done it and their Switch wouldn't boot afterward. I'm sure I could do it, but it's just that little bit of nervousness that is keeping me from trying, lol

PSP/Vita/3DS are different because they are from the pre-connected 24/7 era. Everything now require at least some form of online authentication and/or utilizes e-fuses. Pre-mariko Switches are different because of a colossal security oversight regarding Tegra RCM mode which has been thoroughly patched. I do believe Lite and Mariko will eventually be fully hacked (which might even require direct access to motherboard leads as an alternative to traditional RCM) but it will take waaaay longer. We might even have functional Switch emulators running on smartphone hardware by then.

Well, now its out. even though we don't have nothing that shows any rcm, do you guys think it will be hacked or not?

Its important to note everything 4.1 and below was already hacked and ready way before RCM hit the scene.

All Im reading from these posts is unchecked pessimism. I didnt say it'd be hacked tomorrow, next month, or even a year from now. I simply said it eventually would which has been true for any notable modern console for the past decade.

It’s also worth noting that 4.1 hax involve a nvidia bootrom exploit/oversight.

The Switch isn’t like past consoles, Nintendo’s tz and kernel software has zero useful bugs, and nvidia memes are no long existant on Mariko. This is fact

Yeah and the Vita wasnt like the PSP, and the PS4 was unlike the PS3. There are people saying the exact same things as you every single console generation/iteration and yet every single one was eventually hacked.

Lmao. I wish this was Reddit where I could have an automated reminder to message you that you were wrong four years from now when the lite and switch pro have been blown open.

My information is coming from a guy (SciresM) who has literally been spending 5+ hours every day for the past ~3 years of his life working on Switch stuff, has fully reverse engineered Nintendo’s tz, and various sysmodules multiple times, and has fully reimplemented Nintendo’s TZ, and several sysmodules. If he says it ain’t happening, it ain’t happening. The only hope is another nvidia fuckup, the chances of that happening are extremely low though.

It doesn't matter who it is, there's always a way in the system. If SciresM thinks it cannot be done, someone else will do it instead.

There's a very small player base on the Xbox One compared to other consoles, imagine how many good hackers fit into that demographic, if they even share remotely close to the enthusiasm they have for the Switch.
Playerbase doesn't matter. Hackers don't care about how many people are using the console unless they're trying to profit e.g Cobra Blackfin, True blue, and TX). Most hackers do it for the challenge or bragging rights. On the topic of XBone it has been hacked in private and proof is out there it's just not wide spread. People don't want to release XBone stuff because it runs NT and releasing an NT exploit would be very bad for the 1.5 billion Windows PC users.

I believe Mariko will eventually be hacked. If we look at every other console we can see a trend. The 360 got hacked because one firmware had one hv bug that could be exploited via JTag. For now it's just a waiting game for Nintendo to make another mistake like they did with RO:han on 3.0. This might never happen though and I think we should trust people like Scires who have gotten their hands dirty with RE instead of random people on GBATemp just because they have been in the scene for half a decade. Unless Nintendo makes a mistake I think we'll be waiting years until someone finds some crazy exploit chain that goes through a bunch of sysmodules and trust zone calls in a way that no sane person would.

TL;DR Scires is trustworthy and you're going to be waiting years for a exploit which for the average user might as well never happen because by that point they will have moved on to other systems. Saying it will never happen is hyperbole, worst case scenario is we'll have to wait for computers that can brutforce the sig key for firmwares but that will probably be decades away and probably use quantum computing.

Saying it will take years is also hyperbole though, it's difficult to say how long it would take. And about the Xbox One, I didn't know that, that's pretty neat I guess. But my point was there's little point to hacking an Xbox One for game backups, the only thing is homebrew which people have many systems for, but yeah, the challenge thing is also true (also as a hobby).

I don't agree with this. It will inevitably become hackable at some point. It's a matter of when rather than if. Every console is.
