ChoiDujourNX is the easiest and most used method of updating without burning fuses because there is little to no margin for error and it is an extremely streamlined application. It accomplishes this by enabling AutoRCM after finishing the firmware installation preventing the stock bootloader from activating. However since it requires the usage of CFW & homebrew, it is not the safest in terms of a ban. There are other ways of updating your firmware without burning fuses though.

The second method involves updating the console with AutoRCM enabled while running CFW. You may have asked, "If AutoRCM can be used to prevent fuses from being burnt, why not just update with AutoRCM already enabled?" The reason that is not possible is because system updates normally remove AutoRCM. However free CFW can prevent this. Installing a system update with AutoRCM enabled while running a free CFW will not remove AutoRCM thus preventing your fuses from being burnt. But this still requires the usage of CFW which means it still has a chance to ban your console. There is one more method of updating without burning fuses.

The last way involves manually applying AutoRCM after the system installs the system update. There is technically a way to prevent the stock bootloader from burning fuses without CFW and that involves putting the console into RCM before it has the chance. This is the safest method in terms of a ban since RCM and AutoRCM are next to undetectable but it is also the most dangerous as failing to boot into RCM will burn your fuses. If you wish to try this method, I recommend following this guide.
So which one of these methods keeps the game cart slot from updating?

Any boot to 9.0.0 will update the firmware of your cartridge slot if you haven't enabled autonogc in hekate or nogc in BCT.ini (if you use fusee primary to boot).
Auto NOGC is on, but from what I could gather, system updates disable AutoRCM, which I assume also makes Auto NOGC stop working.
Additionally, my main doubt was when the slot firmware was applied, and from your answer, I assume it's after the reboot?

If you update with ChoiDujourNX, autoRCM will still work after update (double check if autoRCM is enabled during the installation process). Also the latest atmosphere release keeps autoRCM if you update with official server. But I would double check that.

I kinda prefer that one update process that seems safe from bans (manually going into RCM on update reboot).
But by latest version of Atmosphere, you mean 0.9.4? I'm still on 0.9.2.

I was wondering why latest Zelda is not up there in tinfoil latest games list but games released later than that are there?
I bought my switch pre-hacked, so i'm not exactly sure where tinfoil is getting games from, maybe i should reconfigure something?

Can u install firmware thru hekate? I fucked up my firmware in the middle of updating it and now I can only boot stock/hekate
I was going from 7.1 to 8.1 but didn't choose exfat to install so panicked and cancelled the install, it rebooted and no longer had firm. i updated the cfw pkgs and still can not boot, i am assuming i wiped or broke my cfw. how do i restore my cfw/firm back to what i need.

Ps.
many thanks for all the help this thread gives

hi, updated to 9.0.0 through choidujournx, using sysnand cfw since i don't care for online. now i can't boot 9.0.0 cfw, only ofw, i get a black screen if i boot syscfw. anything i can do?

also, atmosphère and hekate are at their latest versions (or they should be, i dragged the files and replaced existing ones)

edit. for good measure, deleted atmosphere, bootloader, sept and switch folders and copied again the latest versions of stuff as per https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/user_guide/emummc/sd_preparation/

still, black screen. no nintendo logo.

i don't have any gamecart on, now that i'm reading about it.

edit2. sysnand with ofw DOES boot, therefore the upgrade was successful. it's just that atmo doesn't like it? i don't know. deleted every folder but the Nintendo folder this time, set up the sd with the proper files, same thing. any ideas?

I assume that you are using hbg shop, which has no first party titles

Well, I tried another sd card just to see if FAT32 made a difference and what do you know, it did. So know I'm migrating my stuff to the PC, formatting, and migrating back.
