Hi, I have an unmodded, unpatched switch which is on 9.0 and would like to mod/hack it and downgrade to 8.1.0
It looks like 9.0 is having issues but 8.1.0 was running fine, therefore wanting to downgrade to 8.1.0
Need help with the best steps to accomplish this. I am able to rcm and inject test payload succesfully.

1. I was planning to use the NH Switch Guide but am open to other options......fusee etc. Which do you use or recommend?
2. Do I mod first then downgrade to 8.1.0 or vice versa?
3. I would like the SD card to be exfat for larger files....NH switch guide has the card partintioned

Thank you

Don't downgrade if you don't have to. What isn't working for you exactly?
You have to be in CFW in order to downgrade.
To change from fat32 to exfat, just copy all files somewhere safe, format the sd and copy the files back.

You cannot downgrade your Switch. If you try, you will brick. You have been warned.

You can follow the Kosmos guide if you wish to use CFW. SD card should be formatted FAT because EXFAT is buggy on Switch.

I haven't done anything yet, just purchased the switch and it was already updated to 9.0
I noticed many posts with people downgrading to 8.1.0 so I figured since I am installing everything for the first time I might as well have everyting working.

Yea, don't do it. You wont gain anything special.
If you were to downgrade, you'd always have to boot through rcm, untill you update. Also, gamecard reader won't work.

You won't brick if you downgrade a non-patched switch. You'll just be required to use a bootloader every time due to fuse mismatch. But it's still very possible. Just not recommended in most cases, and also gamecard slot will stop working due to there being a gc update in 9.0.0.
But it won't brick.

You are technically correct. It's just easier to tell people their consoles will brick. Switch hacking is quite involved compared to say Wii hacking so more chances for newbies to mess up something.

I mean in technicality you aren't exactly wrong either. It will in essence be bricked, it's just that we can bypass the reason it's bricked thanks to fg. But yeah even with that I never recommend a downgrade on sysMMC unless there is a very specific reason to do so

Thank you for the responses, I appreciate the help.
I will not be downgrading from 9.0
I guess I will mod using the NH Switch Guide which includes formatting the SD card into 3 fat32 partitions and transferring files to, then injecting hekate payload. Once that is done then I will make the emuMMC & make a nand backup & get the console's keys and it should be good to go.....I hope LoL

1. Use that guide or is any other method better?
2. Since exFat is buggy how do we handle files larger than 4gb with an Fat32 card?
3. Any other suggestions for making everything run smooth once finished would be appreciated to....must have apps/themes or making gameplay better etc.

You can use the NH Switch guide.

To get around the FAT file size issue, you need to use Goldleaf with a PC.

I would suggest to set up DNS blocking with 90DNS.

You can also check out this alternate guide here https://switch.homebrew.guide/. It's not as comprehensive as the NH Switch guide, but it has sections on DNS blocking and Goldleaf usage that are quite good.

Thank you for the reply. I just got done with the NH guide and backed up nand and keys.
I will look into your suggestions, thanx.

1. Do I have to connect to pc, rcm mode and inject Hekate payload everytime I turn of the switch.....if not then what do I need to do as my switch restarts into ofw?
2. Now I need to figure out how to load games etc.....any guides for that?

There is no way to coldboot the Switch. You will have to send the RCM payload to boot CFW every time you turn on the system from a power off state. You can keep your Switch in sleep mode at all times to get around this after you've booted into CFW.

If you want to install NSP files, use Goldleaf. Guide is here https://switch.homebrew.guide/usingcfw/installnsps. You are on your own regarding signature patches for Atmosphere CFW unless you decide to use ReiNX CFW instead, which includes signature patches by default.

Thank you for the reply. At this point since I just started this, I have no preference for homebrew to use except for it to be as simple & user friendly as possible.

1. Any disadvantages to using ReiNX over Atmosphere?
2. Would I just format the SD card and follow guide for ReiNX?

I suggest you stick with Atmosphere. ReiNX does not have OFW 9.0.0 support at this time. Atmosphere is updated way more frequently as well.

ReiNX is nice because it's pretty simple to use, but it's not updated as frequently as Atmosphere.

If you decide to use a different CFW in the future, it should be as easy as dragging and dropping files on your SD card, formatting should not be required.
