[UPDATE] PS Vita firmware 3.72 released, does NOT blacklist Bitter Smile (h-encore²)

ps-vita-1-jpg.173969

UPDATE: TheFloW confirmed the previous tweets about 3.72 adding Bitter Smile to the blacklist were fake news due to him taking a separate source's word for granted. h-encore² is still working and all accompanying documentation on the GitHub repository has been updated to reflect it.

Moreover, it was also confirmed that downgrading from said firmware using modoru still causes a soft brick. Users are advised against doing so.

The updates just don't stop coming today: first the 3DS, and now it's the PS Vita's turn... however, unlike its competitor, things already seem to be bad right from the get-go. System software 3.72 has just landed and it aims to block h-encore², aka TheFloW's updated h-encore exploit for firmware versions 3.65-3.71, which was released only a few hours ago. This was achieved by adding Bitter Smile (the game used by the aforementioned tool as its entry point) to the title revoke list, thus blocking it from working to work on this system version. No official changelog is available just yet, but it doesn't look like any new features were added either.

As such, anyone interested in hacking their system is strongly advised against installing this new firmware. By doing so, you won't be able to softmod your PS Vita again until someone finds another suitable kernel exploit, which may not happen in a long while, if ever (PS: TheFloW is currently looking for help with finding a new savedata exploit). If you're already running a CFW, you should spoof your system version instead of updating. And as usual, this post will be kept up-to-date with any other useful hacking & homebrew related info.

So if the update was just a coincidence and had nothing to do with the demo or the exploit, then what HAS changed??

Well that's a relief that it didn't get patched after all. Apparently the reason behind the update was just a couple of PSP titles that were failing to launch properly on 3.71. This update's supposedly to fix that.

In other words, that stability bullshit was on point this time around :P

It should be, but I highly recommend against it.

H-encore-2 success rate is only 25%, trying to downgrade from 3.71/3.72 currently softbricks and reF00D would allow you to play any 3.69+ titles while staying on 3.68.

I'm conflicted. There is video evidence to show it's been blacklisted but the dev himself says that it still works.
I'm conflicted too, hm

We actually found out a bit later why that happened. Bittersmile demo didn't launch in that original video because he downloaded and installed it in an unusual way (it was bundled with a NoNpDRM fake license file). Even though the demo is drm-free, this made it fail to launch on OFW.

The error code happens to be the same as the one you get when a game or app is blacklisted (e.g. PSM Dev Assistant). So he was quick to assume that this was the case, but it wasn't.

Wow they didn't patch ANYTHING? Then what was the point of the update?

Early reports say that it may be a fix to certain PSP games not running after Sony overdid their patch for the Trinity exploit in 3.71.
Another thing is that there are currently mass updates for other consoles (including 3DS and PS3 4.85) that are associated with the new EU Payments Services Directive that obligates customers to provide more data for credit card payment. It's possible Vita 3.72 did the same.

There may also be a possibility that the "first f00d exploit" unveiled by Yifan last month got patched, or more downgrade protections added in f00d, but it's not confirmed yet as the analysis of the secure kernel still continues. Edit: SKGleba says that no such changes have been made and the f00d exploit still works.

Hacking f00d seems to be actually necessary now to get modoru working on 3.71-3.72. Some scene members are already trying their efforts on a patch.

Is the flow gonna be working on the PS4? That needs to be cracked past 5.05

TheFlow has said on Discord that he already has a private kernel exploit on PS4 and has no intention of releasing it.
