Final Fantasy VIII Remastered now has a release date

It's been over 20 years since Final Fantasy VIII released on the PlayStation 1, becoming a classic JRPG to many. To the surprise of many, especially due to the commonly thought theory that the original source code had been lost, Square Enix announced a complete remaster of FFVIII for modern platforms. As the trend appears to be, a game is announced at E3, and the release date is given at Gamescom, and this game is no different. Today, Square Enix revealed the planned launch date for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, which is September 3rd. You'll be able to pick up the game for $19.99 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with the new version bringing with it improvements such as turning off encounters, a 3x speedup, and giving yourself max HP/ATB. For the PC version, players will get a few extra cheats, which give you all items, cards, guardian force, gil, magic, special skills, and cards.

I really hated the original final fantasy 8. I've done some ranting on the game in the past, so if you want to skip it (or don't want story spoilers), just don't expand the following box:

Okay: the first disc was still kind of cool. At one point, I managed to got stuck somewhere because I mistook a forest I needed to go in with mere rocks. As a result, I wandered back and forth through the map and did about a gazillion battles. Not that bad, I thought: this would allow me to level up a bit more so the rest of the game would be easier. This later turned out to be a thought fallacy because monsters level up with you (meaning: the whole system is useless to begin with). I also couldn't be bothered with the cards, as I assumed it was a useless gimmick.
So anyway...the first disc ended with a nice cliffhanger. So far, so good.

The second and third disc was where the story became convoluted. It's been years now, but even then I could never understand what that past and present deal was supposed to be. I slowly got tired of all the repetitive fights and just wanted to skip to progress the story. At least I could skip that stupid card game.
And at one point, there is this ENORMOUS storyline "cutscene" where the cowboy reveals that he is the only one not suffering from memory loss and all the characters know each other. That wasn't so much a revelation, as it was DUMB. Perhaps in a movie you could throw this under the "suspension of disbelief" bus, but c'mon...cowboy character was with me for god knows how long. You'd think he (or she? I can't remember) would have mentioned something sooner. Like...when they were planning to kill their former nanny at the end of the first disc?
On top of that: just after my hopes of a decent story progression were torpedoed, my computer and/or the game crashed (this was windows 98 for you). Meaning: I had to go through the whole retarded part again. No 'auto skip cutscene', no way to fast forward. Christ.
After some more faffing about, suddenly all my weapons were stolen. This meant that basically any random encounter could kill half or even my entire party in one or two hits. I think I got halfway through that through the magic art of "saving every time a monster fumbles his attack and loading whenever he didn't", and then fled to the internet. This sounds perhaps a bit late to you youngsters, but try setting your connection to "56k settings" and then browsing through nineties web pages through altavista. Then you'll understand why I wanted 'text only' walkthroughs...the page would probably still be loading if I went with an 'all pictures' guide. :P
The guide said that in order to get through that part, it's pretty much mandatory to have played that card game all the time.

I don't think I've ever bothered to get those discs out of their packaging after that.

Ahem...rant aside: at least SE somewhat recognizes these gripes. Turning off the encounters and a speed-up are much needed. I'd even be tempted to give it another chance if my backlog didn't contain hundreds of games I'd rather play.

Looks like a half ass remaster. Remasters should meet modern standards. Doesn't surprise me though, Square Enix hasn't released a good Final Fantasy in two decades.
Remasters are games made to work on modern systems with little touches. Remakes are what you're thinking about.

Though remastered sounds wrong as master word means like the greatest or ultimate so I think Remastered should be replaced in games with the word revamped:D

I really enjoyed VIII. While it's probably not my favourite FF, I have played through it more times than any of the others - I like the characters more than those in some of the more highly regarded titles in the franchise, and it's non-linear narrative is also more engaging than the stories in most of the later titles.
Not sure if I'll bother with the remaster - I'm always happy to play my original PS1 disks.

Mastering and remastering are production terms. Nothing to do with master equating to great or ultimate.

Ill be honest, ff13 and core crisis are the only two titles I have finished. And 13 I altered my save at the final boss. Couldn’t get past him

It's more or less an accessibility improvement, both with Final Fantasy and Mario Kart. Would you believe that the whole "auto-steering" thing is there for people with motor disabilities who wouldn't be able to enjoy the game otherwise? Or that FF having frameskip/no-encounter modifiers takes away a lot of frustration from some of the more annoying and backtrack-heavy dungeons? Unlike hand-holding, all of those are completely optional, and you can pretty much ignore them if you're enough of a purist, so I don't even see how it's a huge problem.

I don't mind the addition of the cheats. But I don't want them enabled by default; and I certainly don't want them to be activated with a button press on the fly.

Let the user select "easy mode" from the beginning to enable that sort of functionality. Final Fantasy games are not terribly difficult to begin with.

If they release the new character models for the party members they put in as DLC for 3$ for the existing FF8 on Steam I might consider buying it.
Other than that nothing major seems to have changed, it was the same for the FF10(-2) Remaster, all NPCs looked atrocious and the German localization was one of the worst I have ever seen.
If you play FF8 with an emulator with PGXP you can have FF8 with the same visual quality in 16:9 and original OST right now and it only costs 10$ on PSN.

FFVIII was the main game I was in the middle of when my piece of shit third party mega memory card for PS1 failed. I was pretty far into it and never had the urge to start over during that generation and then just moved on entirely. Now is the time for the rematch.

If I may chime in here. This is not new news...hell this news isn't even surprising in the slightest. Square Enix keeps remastering their FF games to the point where hearing of a FF remaster isn't even a pinch of surprising. Square Enix needs to stop remastering their FF games because its getting old and annoying. It would be both better and a surprise if news came out of a new FF game.
