I'm a competitive Smash player, but I still don't have a Switch (it's hard to get one at a decent price in my country), so I still play a lot of Smash 4 online. I've also installed a .cia that unlocks all DLC content (I feel like this may be important since DLC works differently in Smash 4). Is there any risk in doing so? (I have Luma3DS and B9S)

I really can't afford buying the game/DLC at the moment, specially since I'm saving for a Switch, and as mentioned before that costs a lot of money where I live

In 3DS dont worrry. You are totally safe. Nintendo really screw it on the 3DS. So just make sure never use a freeshop app or dome cdn download using your 3DS. If you want to install a new game or DLC, search for the cia on Google and install it with any install program you have

I think there is technically a risk with installing cia as I believe that the 3ds will always send the id of the last title you played whenever you connect to the internet. However, I think this issue is mostly related to custom cia as they have ids that outright don't exist where as with actual games the title id does exist but Nintendo could theoretically notice that your Nintendo account shouldn't be able to use it. I don't think many have been banned like this, but there is always a risk. I also could be completely wrong about this so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Afaik freeshop (and any apps that rely on CDN) doesn't even exist anymore, right? All my games are .cias downloaded from the internet.

I see... Well, it definitely makes sense. Do you think the way DLC works in Smash 4 (in-game store) makes it any worse? I've noticed that every time I visit eshop, my DLC content disappears, forcing me to reinstall the .cia. (I do visit eshop sometimes because I have a lot of legit titles and atm I can't afford to have too many games installed on my SD at the same time since I'm using a 2gb SD, so it isn't something I could avoid any more than I do...)

I really dont know what exists today and what not. Just giving you an advice.

The way Nintendo 3DS works is that any cartridges have an ID that is unique. It means if you are pretending to use a flashcart like sky3DS you need to extract this ID from an original game and youre good to go. Now with CIAs it use the unique ID from your 3DS. So thats why is really safe that you can play online. Because your game (In this case Smash) uses your 3DS ID to go online and because is unique you can play without any worries

I see. What about games downloaded via freeshop? Are they any different from .cias, as far as IDs go?

(also, yeah, Nintendo changed how their CDN/ticket system works. Now you can't download games from their servers without having them in you acc, having a ticket in your console isn't enough anymore)

Even freeshop games are totally safe to play offline. As long as you don't cheat online, you are safe. And btw, cdn downloads are not possible anymore. They fixed it last year.

What about games downloaded via freeshop?
Nothing. You can play them online.

Nice to know! I suspected the whole cdn/cia thing was untrue.

Well, regarding my question, I think there isn't much of a reason to worry about it, right? Is unbanning accounts/NNIDs really a thing? I've seen some posts regarding that process, but I don't really know much about it

Nintendo doesn't ban accounts. They ban the consoles itself.

Is that so? I imagine it has something to do with the console's ID then? Regardless of that, is unbanning a doable task?

Why should that be untrue?

It's untrue as in both methods of obtaining a title are safe as playing online goes. But as stated before (by both of us), obtaining titles via CDN isn't even a thing anymore.

One important note: Opening the eShop will uninstall all illegitimate DLC, so don't do that unless you want to reinstall the DLC CIA or legitimately buy it.

What? No? Definitely not.
It's true, MOST DLC have their tickets automatically deleted the moment you connect to CDN (so eshop, Nintendo account settings, PokeBank, etc.). DLCs for games that let you buy the DLC through the in-game eshop are mostly the ones affected (eg: SwapDoodle, Persona, etc.), although there are a tons of conditions in general, while DLCs like Origin Island and most bought through the actual eshop aren't affected. Generally it's a good idea to avoid the eshop and connecting to CDN in general just to be safe.

Don't worry, I'm well aware of it :P
