Hey all! Wanted to get into hacking my 3DS XL.

I have been watching Youtube videos lately but wanted to ask a couple questions before I did anything.

What is a good SD card to use any suggestions? Size wise and brand name?

My 3d is the old black 3ds xl, is that fine? I know lots of people use the new version with the c stick. Is there a difference?

Will the old 3ds xl run gba games well? If not I wont bother.

Thank you! Sorry if this is in the wrong place I didn't know where to post this.

PS: Oh yea my 3ds version is 11.10.0-43U is that fine?

Using video guides is not a good idea. Many video guides are outdated and/or bad. In addition to this: Most 3DS-interested members of GBAtemp are familiar with https://3ds.hacks.guide/ but certainly not with every video out there.

Having that said to your questions:
  • You will not need a very fast SD. Sadly there are a lot of fake SDs out there (even with well-known brand names printed on). So check any new SD before trusting it Windows, Linux, OS X.
  • Size of the SD… depends what and how many games you want to install (reformat 64GB and bigger to FAT32, 32KB cluster size; if using Windows with guiformat)
    • Many 3DS games are between 0.5 and 1GB. Some games are bigger – up to almost 4GB (Pokemon Ultra Sun|Moon)
    • DS games (you can play these with TWiLight Menu++) are a lot smaller.
    • “Retro” ROMs are hardly worth mentioning.
  • Custom firmware can be installed on any 2|3DS system – no matter if old or new, no matter which System Menu version.
  • The old 3DS consoles are to weak to play GBA games with mgba emulator. But: It can boot into GBA mode and run the games directly on hardware (Virtual Console): [New Super Ultimate Injector]

Thanks for replying!

Do you have any suggestions for the sd card on amazon or something?

So my 3ds would run the gba games slow? Or will they run fine if I use the injector app once I have it hacked?

Sorry, I can't recommend any specific SD – as I already said: As long it is not fake, any SD should do.

GBA games run perfectly* on any 3DS when injected – this is not emulation. The 3DS boots into GBA mode and you could say: It essentially becomes a GBA.

This is similar when playing DS (non-3DS) games. The normal operating system is not loaded anymore, pressing (Home) does not show the Home Menu but a simple question if you want to close the game and you can't use applets like "Game Notes" or "Browser" while playing DS or GBA games.

Games with special sensors (like Yoshi's Universal Gravitation) do not work.

I have bought tons of game digitally the past few years for my 3ds, they are on my current sd card I have in it.

When I buy my new sd card to hack my 3ds, should I copy and paste everything to my new sd card so I don’t lose access to the game I bought? Before I start adding all the Homebrew apps to the card and start the process in the guide?

Copy and paste to a new SD is fine – before and after installing custom firmware.

The only thing you should not do is switching back and forth between different SDs with the same games if the games use Anti Savegame Restore (Pokemon does use this). This warning is not to make you feel insecure: I repeat: Copy and paste to a new SD and then using the new one is fine.

Thanks I know you said you don’t recommend sd cards but do you think the Samsung microsdxc memory card with adapter evo 256 gb is good to have lots of gba and ds and 3ds games on it?

Just want to make sure before I buy it. Is there a guide somewhere for sd cards? Thanks so much for your help.

Thinking about buying a seperate 3ds for modding and keeping my old one as my real one with no homebrew.

Does the new 3ds xl with the c stick work better for modding? What are the differences between homebrewing on the old 3ds xl vs a new 3ds xl?

Runs better? Or do you think I should just use my old 3ds xl?

Does anyone know what version that comes installed on the newer ones fresh out of the box? They will be able to be modded right?

Thinking of getting a Sandisk Ultra 128GB microsdxc uhs-I card with adapter black.

Is 128gb good enough size to put lots of 3ds/gba/ds games on it? Or should I go higher?

Sorry for all the questions just want to be sure of this before I go ahead and go for it.

Can you save on most of the games you inject with FBI? (GBA/DS/3DS?) or do you need to use a seperate thing to be able to save?

This is all my legit purchases on my sd card currently. When I buy the new bigger sd card to Homebrew what do I do about these?

Will I be able to redownload them on my new sd card from the eshop under my Nintendo acc? Or do u copy and paste the stuff to the new sd card?

Copy and paste is okay. Installing CFW has no impact on that. Format the SDXC card to FAT32, test it before trusting it and copy your stuff on.

The games and their saves will show up – if everything is okay with the new SD. Redownloading paid eShop content is also possible and CFW does no changes to that. You will keep all tickets/licenses. But: Redownloading will obviously not include your saves.

Being "The backup reminder", I advise everybody to backup their saves with JKSM and/or Checkpoint from time to time – in any case not only when getting a different SD.

p.s. Impressive collection of full-price titles… I got most of these as used cheap cartridges because the download versions are soooooo expensive.

Yea I feel like a fool buying them all full price when you can get them free basically with Homebrew lol.
