"Playlists don't work in ozone"

"Well yeah but that's just ozone"

Thanks for that Earth shattering input. What a game changer.
You are welcome!
Making statements that 1.7.7 is broken and should not be released is ridiculous and misleading mate. Have you even fully tested it or know how to set it up correctly??

I have built a ridiculous complete build with 1.7.7 and can confirm it is 99% perfect after testing most emulators and playlist over the last few days.

Issues I came across;
  1. Loading times to launch and exit games still too long at 20-30 seconds (happy to put up with it for now)
  2. mednafen_wswan_libretro.rpx doesn't work for Wonderswan, Color is fine. (Def not a deal breaker)
  3. Game & Watch Core gameplay not possible on some games. (Would be nice to have fixed)
  4. Ozone Theme does load playlist but only artwork showing, unable to see game title names (Don't care, XMB Rocks with custom backgrounds)
These are not deal breakers in my opinion and 1.7.7 is very usable

I have never seen that error, I already answered this in a previous post page 566, Atari 5200 requires a config file so that the User 1 controller is automatically selected at launch, link in previous post. Make sure you also have the bios in systems folder

@Retroaussie Great collection and organization of thumbnails and playlists. I'm glad people are still interested in WiiU homebrew.

The slow access time is due to Wii U's slow SD interface speed. It's already been requested make a USB installable Retroarch since USB 2.0 would be better. But it seems that task is difficult since cores are hardcoded to r/w from SD card.

I believe you need to enable libfat or something like that, or was it libusb, I don't recall, I haven't used RA on Wii U in over a year. There was a way to enable faster read/load times by installing a small hack, but I can't recall its name. Some of the cores require big endian implementation, maybe dynarec, but who knows if that will be feasible on Wii U.

Any console with only one core available crashes retroarch when you select a game and it’s supposed to bring up the list of available cores and you want to claim this release isn’t broken? If you only want one SNES core you can’t. Wonderswan can’t be played at all as there is only one core for it period. Other releases like PlayStation Classic, PS3, 3DS, and PC don’t do this. But hey, if you need to pretend I don’t know how to set up retroarch you do you.

If you look at the video on his previous page most cores are from 1.7.7 with the exception of mGBA which looks to be 1.7.6, so my guess is he's running 1.7.7 Retroarch stable with a few specific previous cores. He did mention an issue with mednafen I think or wonderswan not working. Also it has been said for a while that Retroarch will have better running behavior on XMB mode if you have it organized into playlists and such. Also having content load directly from SD also works better than USB. I mean its not rocket science if you put 2 and 2 together. The Wii U port just has specifics that need to be followed at this point for it to run like one would want it to due to small kinks and bugs that need to be reported and fixed.

Why are you being snide at someone who is basically saying "hey this is how you can optimize it and get it running at around 90% with minimal issues" is beyond me, and as was already mentioned if you know of any bugs report them at the github so the actual devs could possibly pay some attention to them. He's not a dev to begin with or a magical elf that's going to solve the problems with the app. He's just offering a viable alternative that he has gone through the trouble of building for better stability's sake.

Go blame it on the mountain and maybe it'll cry you a river.

Spot on mate, the key is understanding the limitations, workout how RA works best on WiiU and done.

To have it working smooth on the Wii U I use playlists for each system/collection, I used Playlist Buddy to make all 55 custom playlists in my build (Not the RA scan roms function)

When creating playlists you set the emulator path which is then coded into the playlist

Works well...even for Atari 5200 ;P as per video above

I guess there are people that contribute to the community and there are people that just complain.

I wonder why I join these forums sometimes, rather than learning from each other and building big ass setups, let's just bag the shit out of the platform cause we don't understand how to use it, and therefore no one knows how to build a successful system out of it. Seriously sad

Anyways I might just stick to FB Groups

Wow this playlist setup is a big jump for the wii u, nice one to all the guys for this. I joined group and will be getting it at the weekend when I have some time.

All in awesome and cannot wait to get it sorted.

One question, does P-UAE need a keyboard to function properly, as I struggle using it. Also Vice X64 seems to jitter in games, eg Bruce Lee, regardless if I set to pal or ntsc, and even when I change the all the sound chip options none work smooth, is that normal for wii u as vice worked almost perfect on normal wii.

Thanks

Looks great! Just one question: Do Atari 800 and/or 5200 have four controllers? I haven't had time to do anything on my Wii U for months, but this would be a total deal maker since on Wii the Atari emulator didn't have four controllers which would be crucial to be able to play M.U.L.E. ;)

Have only tried this with one controller so not sure

@Retroaussie I think you should still release your build here in some form without the roms.

Maybe link to a few of the playlist documents and images so people can get a feel of the correct paths to follow or some sort of “light” build if you will.

I will be downloading the fb group build soon enough for myself but what I’m saying it would be great to drop some of the groundwork here for quick reference.

Thank you for all your work on this so far.

Thanks mate will do but we need to understand the limitations of the key element in retroarch, the playlists.

Unlike other front ends eg Attract Mode or Emulationstation, the retroarch playlists have the following limitations;
  1. They are based on the scanned romset (using Playlist Buddy). (lets say my roms)
  2. The playlist will still show the game in RetroArch whether the rom is present or not (retroarch cannot determine if the rom is available or not)
  3. If a rom is not named exactly as in the playlist it will not work
Given these limitations it can actually cause more problems rather than a help to others

Mastering the creation of playlists is the solution but this was probably the most painful & time consuming process.

Porting the bezel project was also a time consuming task but rewarding

You can see now why an image makes more sense.

Thanks for your work @Retroaussie this deserves a proper release. Maybe the only condition is to remove the roms and bios folder (retroarch/system), and users can find their roms somewhere else (I see even that archive website is now hosting fullsets for old consoles, maybe their argument is to preserve videogames as a piece of art).

Thanks mate, it’s already available on several FB Groups as mentioned in a previous post
