The Switch runs off of an eMMC. Rather than me explain it, you can just look it up on Google. emuMMC is a hack that clones the eMMC and runs it from an external location such as the SD card. TX calls it "emuNAND" but the Switch does not use a NAND chip so the name is highly misleading. Anyway, there are advantages to having a firmware of 4.1 For example, firmware 4.1 has access to Deja Vu which is an exploit that doesn't require the use of a jig or USB cable to boot CFW but rather a network connection. There may be more exploits released for that firmware version in the future which do not facilitate the need for a jig and USB cable making a 4.1 backup very useful. Lastly, you can update emuMMC to the latest firmware after creating it with a homebrew application called ChoiDujourNX.

Thanks Drax! At first, i didn't understand that MMC is the good name for "Nand" on Switch, that's why i was confused. I know what is the "emunand" and what it does. I was just not sure if it was a good idea to backup at 4.1 instead of at last version. Now all is clear for me. Thanks again! ;)

I updated to 8.1.0 the other day and burned my fuses. Is there any reason to keep my backup on 2.3.0?
It's ok to delete it?

I'm not being able to convert Mario Maker 2 from xci to nsp. All other games I tried converted without problem. It it on the blacklist? Any solution?

This one:
switch.homebrew.guide/usingcfw/manualupgrade

OK, using this tutorial, I managed to get downgraded via Atmosphere and ChoiDujourNX. However, I'm running into the same problem. I've downgraded to 8.0.1, then to 8.0.0, then to 7.0.0, and all of them show the SX OS splash screen followed by a disconnection on TegraRCM GUI and a blank screen after I inject "payload.bin". I can confirm that downgrading to 6.2 firmware gives me back a functioning switch (i.e., it proceeds to the main Nintendo screen after I inject "payload.bin" on 6.2) with the ability to play XCI backups, but I have a few that are demanding higher firmware versions.

Is there another way around this? How can I upgrade my firmware beyond 6.2 with SX OS?

You should be injecting fusee-primary.bin payload to boot atmosphere
Works great with the 8.0.1

When I inject Atmosphere, it does work fine with 8.0.1, but I can't play my XCI backups. With SX OS, I just had to go into the Album and select an XCI to play. Ideally, I'd like to keep using SX OS, but if you can point me towards instructions for mounting and playing XCI files in Atmosphere, I'd appreciate it.

You're asking about playing XCI files from external with Atmosphere? Not possible. Only SX OS has that feature. So it's completely normal that you can't play your XCIs when you send the Atmosphere payload.

is it possible to use Caffeine
on 3.0.1? or is 3.0.1 stuck out in the cold? it seems odd to me that an exploit would run on 3.0.0 and 4.0.0 but not 3.0.1 which is a pretty minor update?
additionally where can I find a list of game cartridges that include 4.0.1 or 4.1.0 and if I have to choose between 4.0.0 and 4.1.0 which is better?

edit: oh also is caffeine just another name for pega?
edit2: if I have a never before touched 3.0.1 switch, how stupid would it be to go find some used game cartridge that contains 4.0.0 on it and then use that to update and then setup caffeine/pega/whateverthenew deja fork thingie is for 4.0.0 from a month ago.... because I've been holding off all this time because I'm really paranoid about jigs.

It does not work on 3.0.1-3.0.2. The security differences between 3.0.0 and 3.0.1/3.0.2 are very significant.

If you want to use Deja Vu at this time, you must update to 4.0.1-4.1.0. However, using the RCM exploit with a jig is recommended. It's relatively safe, and you only need to use a jig one time if you're willing to install AutoRCM. If you don't want to buy a jig, you can use something like a paperclip.

If Deja Vu is significantly more appealing than using a jig one time, then it's not stupid to update to 4.0.1-4.1.0. It doesn't matter what you choose between 4.0.1-4.1.0.

I found this guide:
https://switch.homebrew.guide/hacking/caffeine/pegascape
But it's odd... I can't find a caffeine/pega/deja guide on gbatemp for 4.0.1...
This thread seems extremely out of date https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-setting-up-pegaswitch-and-preparing-for-homebrew.489299/
Is there a thread somewhere on gbatemp about dejavu on 4.0.1? I've been scanning lots of recent thread titles... (since apparently this has only been possible for about a month I thought I'd find it, but I didn't, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?)

edit: Certain games actually contain switch firmware updates right? I've had bad luck so far "googling nintendo switch game cartridge that contains 4.0.1 update"
I could've swore there was a list of such games on gbatemp, but I've misplaced it as well.

edit2:

okay so I read this:
We know that the required firmware on games is also packet on the cartridge.
over on this thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/list-games-required-firmware-version.485959/

Now I am going to conclude that means I need one of these cartridges and only these will work:
  • Attack on Titan - [Need to update to play online]
  • Battle Chasers Nightwar -
  • Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy
  • Dead Cells - [Tested on cartridge, however E-shop will allways need latest update]
  • Donkey Kong - Tropical Freeze
  • Harvest Moon Light of Hope
  • Owlboy
  • Legend of Kay: Anniversary
  • Nintendo Labo - all kits
  • Mario Tennis Aces
  • Monster Hunter Generations
  • Mega Man: Legacy Colletion 1 & 2
  • Mega Man: Legacy Colletion X1 & X2
  • Overcooked 2
  • Penny Punching Princess
  • Runner3
  • Steamworld Dig 2
  • Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
  • Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido
  • Wild Guns Reloaded
  • Wolfenstein II The New Colossus
  • Wonderboy: Dragon's Trap
  • Bayonetta 1 & 2
I arrived at this list by deleting the games listed as e-shop downloads, which I took to mean that either the cartridge didn't exist, or it did exist but would've had a different firmware requirement.
If this list is true and accurate, some of these cartridges are very easy to find! so hooray. However I'm not entirely sure I comprehended the point of the thread I just linked. I don't wanna waste 20$ and more importantly a day driving around town looking for old switch cartridges on sale. If anyone has any idea what I'm talking about and confirm that I've comprehended this thread correctly: https://gbatemp.net/threads/list-games-required-firmware-version.485959/
Then please do reply and let me know.

Also while I'm ranting which is better? 4.1.0 or 4.0.1? I assume it doesn't really matter since I could always downgrade from 4.1.0 to 4.0.1 someday if I had to?

OK, but this still doesn't answer my original question.

When I update firmware with ChoixDuJourNX beyond 6.2 and try to use SX OS, I just get a black screen after injecting the SX OS payload. I want to use SX OS because I have XCI files, but I also have XCI files that need firmware beyond 6.2. How do I keep using SX OS and successfully update the firmware so it will boot to the Nintendo GUI properly?

Never mind, I figured out what was wrong. I was on a much earlier version of SX OS. I updated to the latest beta (2.8) and it supports the latest firmware. I have 8.0.1 running smoothly on my device now. Thanks to all who pointed me in the right direction!

I recommend using this guide, which you already have. It is thorough and correct.

As you have discovered, different cartridges have different system updates on them. If you want to use Deja Vu at this time (since you're on 3.0.1), you must update to 4.0.1-4.1.0 somehow.

As I recommended before, it's very easy to enter RCM using a jig of some sort. I personally recommend using a paperclip. If you have the correct sized paperclip, it fits perfectly (after some bending), and you only need to enter RCM with it one time to install AutoRCM. Alternatively, if you enter RCM, you can also use homebrew to update to 4.0.1-4.1.0, without a game cartridge, using ChoiDujourNX, and then you can switch to Deja Vu. Before doing any of this though, the first thing you should do once you launch a payload is use Hekate to make a NAND backup.

The page you found with required system versions does not necessarily mean that those cartridges include those system updates. You should use this thread (or something else like it) for finding a game cartridge with a specific update. Using a jig would likely be less trouble than finding a specific cartridge for a specific update.

For hacking purposes, there's no real difference between 4.0.1 and 4.1.0, and since you will likely be using an emuNAND (or two) to play your games, it's largely irrelevant which you use. Most people using Deja Vu are using 4.1.0, so it hypothetically might have more support.

I know this was a lot, so here's a quick summary of your four options:
  1. Use a jig and fusee-gelee for your hacking
  2. Use a jig and fusee-gelee to install AutoRCM, and use AutoRCM and fusee-gelee for your hacking
  3. Use a jig and fusee-gelee to update to 4.0.1-4.1.0, and use Deja Vu for your hacking
  4. Use a specific cartridge to update to 4.0.1-4.1.0, and use Deja Vu for your hacking

This thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/cartridge-information-collection.492311/ doesn't have any better answers for me than https://gbatemp.net/threads/list-games-required-firmware-version.485959/ does..

If my cart update strategy is a gamble, maybe I should take the safer gamble of the paperclip. (I know people say the paperclip is totally safe, but I've nuked hardware with electricity before in my life a couple times, although it was always a case of faulty wiring in the house or once even my socks).

That said, if I could find a game that contained the 4.1.0 firmware update AND was a game I wouldn't mind paying, I'd definitely drop 20$ on it. That way if it doesn't work and I lose the gamble I still have a game I can play after using the paperclip (I don't intend to pirate games, I just want to protect my switch from nintendo updates (while still playing the newest games), and perhaps eventually run emulators and such on it, nintendo's backwards compatibility and virtual console systems are both total jokes).

Darkest dungeon, as well as kirby are both interesting choices that weren't in the first thread I considered. Although picking a game that appeared on both thread's lists might be ideal (like bayonetta). Or even just picking the worst (cheapest) which would probably be sushi.

Hello

I would like to convert nsp files to XCI files. I'm using SXOS

I have found this recent post on how to do it.
https://team-xecuter.com/community/threads/guide-how-to-convert-nsp-to-xci.129494/

Can you advise me if this can work?

The only thing is that I do not heve the keys yet... I read that lockpick can be used for this.. but is this for all firmware versions.. I thought I read is worked only up until a certain FW

can I google the keys.txt and use them If I found any? Do they have to match the current firmware?

Can something happen with my switch if I don't use the right key file or won't the game just be converted?

Which payload injector dongle is better. RCMloader One B or NS-Atmosphere? I can't find a proper spec page for NS-atmosphere, so I can't tell if one is better or if they're both the same!
