Report: Nintendo will be allowing free Joy-Con repairs, will refund those who paid a fee previously

nZ9klfK.png

The Switch Joy-Con drift drama saga continues. Nintendo's official statement earlier today wasn't the only new update to the situation, as a report from Vice has revealed that an internal memo within Nintendo is calling for all customer support agents to allow for Joy-Cons to be sent in for repair, free of charge. Not only that, but should you need to send in your controller for repair, representatives will no longer require a proof of purchase, nor will they still have to be under warranty. Previously, owners were required to show proof that they purchased the Joy-Cons new, and once they got past the general troubleshooting with a support agent, they were then allowed to send their non-functioning Joy-Cons to Nintendo, along with $40, in order to be repaired. Additionally, if you did happen to already send your Joy-Cons in and paid the $40 requirement, you can request a refund so long as you can prove that you had them repaired in the past. Though Nintendo seems reluctant to actually admit anything on the matter, it does appear that they're taking steps internally, to assist customers that have been affected by Joy-Con drift.

My, that's super "generous" of them haha. Offering a free repair service, seems like the fear of possibly facing lawsuits really hit them hard.
I'd be sending mine for repairs but my joycons behave in an odd manner. It's as if they want to do their job whenever and however they like it--they could be working just fine most of the times, but at times they start acting up, drifting and moving into random directions.

So I can send my launch day joycons in and get them fixed or replaced? I never got them wet or dropped them I’m careful with my toys.

Fuck Nintendo.
Dont get me wrong. For me, the switch is way above a ps4 or an Xbox1 and thats why i even own one.
But this Joycon bullshit is a serious joke. Im playin with an SN30pro (just google it) since my last Joycons Drifted again.
Next ima get the SN30pro+ (both about half the Price, with 10 times the Playtime). Nintendo shows the same dedication as Sony for their Vita.
Why even buy that bullshit? Its a failure since day one.

It was never going to hold up in court. I already saw it a mile away. Its the dumbest thing to sue over and no judge would ever go through with it.
How do you figure? I know US consumer protection law is some the weakest anywhere but even they are not going to dismiss a claim of selling a device unfit for purpose/that did not last a reasonable amount of time and refusing to warranty it. Even if it would be a bad outcome I could still see a path to it ending in Nintendo's favour (at least in the US) but don't see how it would be dismissed at the outset.

this is now Nintendo's official RROD!

While I would agree that this looks terrible on Nintendo, comparable to the 360 RROD or PS3 YLOD from a consumer satisfaction perspective, those were console ruining problems, and usually pretty well addressed by the companies from the outset*.

*some considered it generous, however at the time European law would probably have said they need to sort it.

Since Nintendo does not officially operates over here, I'm still boned.
The only solution for those of us not covered by the "free repairs" is a joycon revision without the design flaw.

Great news for some people though.

The Switch is by far Nintendos shoddiest, cheapest and flimsiest hardware ever as usually they create rock solid consoles/handhelds that are very durable. In between the joycon issues, warped machines, dock scratches and all the rest this whole new "lets cheap out on everything" Nintendo isn't the same as "lets only cheap out on specs" Nintendo of yore.

Hi everyone. I am based in the UK. I have just called Nintendo to book 2 left joycons in for repairs. They said that they are having issues booing repairs on their end and that you can do it through their website. The person I spoke to said you would have to pay for the repairs if it is out of warranty. Please let me know if you are in the UK and have had any luck. Thanks

Really hope this becomes a worldwide policy. That being said knowing what a shithole Nintendo Australia is I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't pass this on. I have 3 left joycons that are pretty much useless, they don't really see much heavy use except on weekends with mates and they are even regularly cleaned. :(

I only hope that they also repair other damages. I had one right joycon with a defective SL/SR flat cable that I gave to a friend so he could cash it on a gamestop (they were buying used joycons even with problems), now if it can be repaired for free it would be better.

What if I send my joycons from India to somewhere Nintendo operates (like Japan) to get them fixed. Would that work?
