Ive only been affected by joycon drift once, I sent my system in for reasons other than drift though and they came back without drift, never had a problem since. But my cousin has at least 4 pairs of joycons and they all drift. Insane.

If you dont have yet you will definitely have some day with more use... Mine might never drift since I rarely use my Switch and its kept in a closed bag

Waiting for the Nintendo: "We only make high quality products" before I can actually start using my Switch, it makes me beyond pissed a console with expensive controllers already going 2019 and still no god damn real triggers support, the joy-con rear buttons break easily, the joystick precision even new sucks...

Heh seems like Nintendo will get around to fixing that joycon bug eventually somehow. If not then they might get sued or something. Funny how they didn't mention anything up until now. Heh, is insane what fear can drive them to.

My launch system never gets joycon play, but I bought a used system about a month after launch that I use in bed exclusively with joycons. Put a lot of hours in before but then played FF8 just using the right joycon one handed and I guess it was too much cause now it randomly but consistently drifts down. I really like the joycons, I don't know how I will live without this kind of controller in future game consoles and "handhelds", a split controller is really comfortable and lazy and perfect for bedtime (though the joycons can be hard to find in the morning). I hope they actually fix the problem, but at this point it seems like it would have to be as monumental of a business decision as the rrod warranty extension which cost M$ a lot of money. I heard somewhere on reddit that it was around a $5 usd cost to repair them through official means, which doesn't seem like that bad of a deal, but idk how accurate that info is.

sorry for being a bit out of the loop, I've heard people talk about "joy con drift" on this site before, but I don't understand what that means exactly.

Does the joystick not return to the centre anymore? Or is the console always detecting input in some direction? Both?

Just wondering cos I have a launch switch and never had a problem with my joy cons apart from noticeable lag/delay if the docked console is next to a router

It's movement being detected on the stick randomly and unpredictably regardless of your inputs.

I've only experienced drift once. It was the left stick of a day 1 heavily used joycon after about 1.5 years. I just bought a joystick online and replaced it, no problems since. All my other joycon have been fine. I only know 1 other person irl that had the same story, but I replaced his joystick too and he's had no issues since. But I see it everywhere online so it's definitely a widespread issue.

Anyways, It seems this lawsuit has gotten Nintendo to recognize the joystick's design flaw, and the fact that they are offering easier warranty fixes is really a step in the right direction (extending warranties for early adopters would be nice too) however, I have no doubt that in a short time all new joycon will be fixed.

Before I sold my Switch, my joycon started drifting and nintendo wanted to charge me like $50 plus shipping to fix it. I said hell no and it turned into this weird haggling game and eventually the person on the other end just offered the service for free. Really odd stuff. Anyway the Switch is a piece of shit, I only used that joycon a few times before it started having problems. Kinda appalled how little Nintendo gave a shit while designing it as this usually isn't the case with them

Oh well, they're selling millions and mindless idiots keep eating up uninspired sequels and 5 year old ports. What a time to be alive.

hat class action suit is going to have a tough time trying to prove that the stick issue is actually as prevalent as everyone claims, failure rates being significantly higher than would be normal in the market and that it's not due to mishandling and whatnot

I don't have issues with drift myself, but my right joycon slides out of the rail with just a tiny bit of force now. It's a shame Nintendo decided to cut corners or cheap out on their super special amazing controllers, you'd think they'd want one of the core components of the system to, y'know, last more than a couple years before having issues.

those plastic hooks and claws and rails were a concious design choice. the point being that should you ever drop the thing, those plastic parts will break, protecting the more expensive main body from damage.

tbf i think the main sources who would have the figures people need would be the likes of insurance companies, the lot of joy cons i showed earlier were from such a company, i had 2 lots from them, I'm not 100% sure which company it was so idk how big they were, but i would guess they were replacing at least 60 joy cons per month for their customers based on the 2 batches i got, although about 20% of those were general faults like faulty buttons, or just plain no sign of life(probably from water damage etc), the vast majority were analogue stick drifting

just for perspective, on things like Xbox 1 controller batches i would say its 80/90% user damage, i.e broken usb port, or liquid damage causing buttons to stop responding, that said i would personally prefer buying a batch of broken switch controllers as its a good bet that the fault is a quick easy fix compared to PS4/XB1 controllers

I have not heard any reports of third party joycons drifting. However, they do appear to use very similar (if not identical) analog stick parts, albeit with cheaper rubber molding. If this lawsuit falls through, then I plan on purchasing the first party hori split pad when it release late september. It appears to be using much more traditional analog sticks (and looks fairly comfortable, with a real d-pad). It's also reportedly only going to be around ~~20 bucks more~~ than official joycons. I may be wrong about that price though.
EDIT: Actually, it appears from their website to be even cheaper than official joycons. Now I'm even more excited for it.

Yeah I haven't had any problems with my launch day grey pair of joycons drifting, but I pre-ordered the Daemon X Machina split pad because I like everything about the design. The colors, button layout, and thickness of it all seem to be exactly what I'm looking for in an upgrade for portable play. Hopefully the sticks are more durable, too.
