[UPDATE] PS Vita firmware 3.71 released, patches Trinity exploit chain completely

PS-Vita-1.jpg

Bad news for the whole PS Vita scene. Sony has just stealthily dropped a new system update for the PS Vita: version 3.71. No official changelog is available at the moment, as Sony's website still lists 3.70 as the latest one, but it was clear since the beginning that the new firmware was aimed towards fixing exploits and security flaws as no new features were added. However, when scene member and console hacker TheFloW took an in-depth look at it, he found out that every single bug used by his Trinity exploit chain had been patched, making it impossible to run or port it over to the new system software.

Given the circumstances, it should go without saying that users interested in running any kind of homebrew on their PS Vita should avoid updating at all costs. If you don't, you will have to wait until a completely new exploit comes out for 3.71 - if that ever happens. TheFloW recommends anyone running Trinity to downgrade to firmware 3.68 or lower, otherwise, you may be locked out of the exploit chain in the future. On the other hand, if you're already running Henkaku or h-encore, you can spoof your system version to 3.71 directly from your CFW's settings.

UPDATE: @st4rk from team xyz has shown an exploit chain working under 3.71 in a tweet (linked below) which seems at least based upon their previously unveiled one for firmware 3.70. No further details or ETA were given.

It's very surprising that they're still releasing updates for a discontinued console, but to be fair, they did get an idiot proof description of the exploit. Lesson for the future. I can't imagine this is worth the man hours in Europe or America, but in Japan the Vita was quite successful, so I imagine it made sense to patch.

Sorry guys, I'm sure this was my fault. I wanted one of the cool colors so I ordered an used Orange Japanese 2000. It took forever to ship, but I got it on Friday and it was on 3.70.

Factory firmware on was 3.50, so I was able to get a full 3.60 Henhaku mod on it. God did I just dodge a bullet with it.

Bought the PSP Slim at EOL, never bothered with the Vita. What are the greatest benefits of hacking the Vita anyway?

Ho~
Interesting, I have suspected that they - Sony - may be able to fix and patch it (after all why not), but to think they had the will to do it... "wow" of sort.
I guess they want to somewhat close Vita chapter "properly" without leaving any holes (or to think so at least :P), it's the matter of "honor" somewhat :P

TheFlow purposely released the hack as he has at least one more ace up his sleeve.

THEFLOW, WE NEED YOU BACK !
They were pretty clear in the Trinity write-up and Twitter that this was their last project for the Vita scene.

This was the coolest exploit chain that I had ever written and certainly also my proudest project. I enjoyed exploring these new attack surfaces and it gave me nostalgia as it combined a decade of knowledge and research by the PSP/PS Vita community. This project also concluded my work for the PS Vita scene and I hope that my write-up would inspire other people to begin with reverse engineering, finding vulnerabilities and exploitation. I believe that I am only here where I am today thanks to these kind of write-ups and I believe you can all achieve the same if you just want to.
From the conclusion of the Trinity write-up

We knew this was coming. The flow has retired and now Sony devs will finally sleep at night. Probably the last firmware version we're going to see for the vita. RIP

I never purchased a the PS Vita so... yeah, but it looks like Sony is out for CFW like Nintendo is, or was.

Because for the most part I have no need for it.
I'd only be in fan translations but I have way too much of a backlog atm to care about them anytime soon.
