[UPDATE] PS Vita firmware 3.71 released, patches Trinity exploit chain completely

PS-Vita-1.jpg

Bad news for the whole PS Vita scene. Sony has just stealthily dropped a new system update for the PS Vita: version 3.71. No official changelog is available at the moment, as Sony's website still lists 3.70 as the latest one, but it was clear since the beginning that the new firmware was aimed towards fixing exploits and security flaws as no new features were added. However, when scene member and console hacker TheFloW took an in-depth look at it, he found out that every single bug used by his Trinity exploit chain had been patched, making it impossible to run or port it over to the new system software.

Given the circumstances, it should go without saying that users interested in running any kind of homebrew on their PS Vita should avoid updating at all costs. If you don't, you will have to wait until a completely new exploit comes out for 3.71 - if that ever happens. TheFloW recommends anyone running Trinity to downgrade to firmware 3.68 or lower, otherwise, you may be locked out of the exploit chain in the future. On the other hand, if you're already running Henkaku or h-encore, you can spoof your system version to 3.71 directly from your CFW's settings.

UPDATE: @st4rk from team xyz has shown an exploit chain working under 3.71 in a tweet (linked below) which seems at least based upon their previously unveiled one for firmware 3.70. No further details or ETA were given.

Not surprising TBH, even if the Vita's been discontinued they still make a little bit of cash on the side from all the weeb games that still come out in JP. Only makes sense to continue fixing exploits until they officially stop support for the Vita (which, assuming they keep the whole "10 YEARS OF SUPPORT!" Thing will be 2023).

Keepin' my systems at 3.60. Question: I know you can spoof later firmwares, but is it still impossible to download games from the Playstation Store? I've attempted it before, but the downloads give an error after they finish, even with the spoof.
You need to use the ReStore plugin to use the PS Store on lower firmwares, not just spoofing.

Though you should keep in mind the latest version of the plugin is a bit buggy (v5), so you may want to use a lower version if you can get it.

It's very difficult to justify getting a Vita unless you're a big fan of, to quote other people here, "weeb games". The pickings were always slim, even when the system had its trickle of support. Compared to the 3DS, it was like watching those people who run a marathon as a rhino - why did you bother? It was humiliating on Sony's part and it's the only system Sony have refused to release sales figures for. Figures.

That aside I'm not sure why they're bothering updating it at all. In Sony's defence, it was a really secure system and ahead of its time in the security department. Perhaps their pride for the security of the system is all they have left. I can't imagine they're making money off the system anymore, and probably haven't been for years, so it's a bit bizarre. Especially since they've discontinued it.

They do make money from the system. It did sell pretty well in Japan, where they still sell quite lot of games for the system. A lot of the multiplatform games that were available for both Vita and PS4, did sell more on the Vita (given Japan's preference of portability).

There are also smaller games being released on PSN, so I can understand why they would want to keep patching the system.

If I bought a 3.70 Vita today, would I be able to use DNS to download a PSP game and run Trinity?

You need to have access to a PSN account for Trinity. By all means if you don't have one set up, format the vita and it should let you use a PSN account without updating. But BE CAREFUL, as the factory settings let the vita auto-download the updates (it will still ask you to install them). Afterwards set up the DNS and try to get a PSP game/demo and downgrade ASAP with trinity+modoru before it stops working.

If the vita already has a PSN account set up. Use the DNS and try to get to the store and DL a demo before it demands you're on 3.71.

there are still people buying a vita that don't even know hacking is a thing. and they spend some money on the ps store.

i thought they removed all the free demos.
you need to buy one of the compatible games now.

Just yesterday I was thinking about finally hacking my Vita because it's only collecting dust at this point.
I'll stay away from this update for sure.
Changing the DNS should allow you to jailbreak it still. But, if you're on 3.69 or 3.70, Idk any DNS.

Tried DNS? I also remember a homebrew named "update blocker", or something of sorts.

I'm on 3.70 and I could still access PSN via DNS to redownload a crappy PSP game I bought (and since deleted) years ago.
Now it's time for some retroarch fun on a nice OLED screen, I guess!

I always liked the PSVita as a console, a shame that Sony dropped it so quickly.
If only the battery lasted longer and the proprietary memory cards didn't exist...

Edit:
Setting this as the primary DNS works for me: 212.47.229.76

There are still games being released, for either Asia or Japan regions.

I suppose that's fair enough, it got quite a bit more traction in Japan. Still, it's baffling for the more international audiences who haven't had anything to brag about for years.
