Homebrew Why 100% of the DSi tutorials let you install Hiya CFW AND TWiLight Menu?

I got an used dsi, and the guy sold it to me for pennies ($10 including charger and a 32gb sd, added bonus he bought 6 games from dsiware shop) because it took a whole two minutes to boot and he was thinking it was faulty.

It took this much time to booot because:
  • unlaunch 1.4 splash screen
  • loading hiya cfw from the sdcard
  • loading TWiLight menu automatically
  • fake health and safety screen from TWiLight menu
  • TWiLight menu video intro
so i tried to make it faster and i did this:
  • unlaunch 1.9 who doesn't have a splash screen (saves 3 seconds)
  • unlaunch directly boots twilight.nds (saves a whole minute)
  • fake health and safety screen disabled (saves 3 seconds)
  • video intro disabled (saves 10 seconds)
and, I did not notice anything wrong with twilight menu launched directly from unlaunch, i was able to launch 100% of the ds games i tried, including games via gbarunner2

so, what's the reason 100% of the tutorials online bother with installing hiya cfw on the sdcard? (which is not really that user friendly)

"Guide" is often misunderstood as "only true way", but it really means "this is how it worked for me, if you'd like to copy my setup here's how I arrived to it"*;
in fact if I posted a criticism like yours I would have ended it with "why bother installing twilightmenu++, when Hiya already gives you emunand, you can run DSi mode emulators directly from the DSi Menu and DS games run much better on a quality flashcard, and I dislike inaccurate ripoffs of official console UIs?" :)

The ability to have TWM++ work fully without Hiya is also a fairly recent development;
"Two minutes", though, sounds quite excessive...

* which is why I'm fairly skeptical of recommending any "guide" when they often fail to explain what you're doing and why, in fact often promoting automation to disguise complexity, & recommend optional software while failing to fairly acknowledge the major alternatives

Probably it was slower than average because the guy found a "easy zip" from somewhere online, instead of making hiya cfw from his own nand backup.

Inside the sd card i found a nand.bin which, when loaded in no$gba, had a totally different console nickname, had a load of stuff already inside, and a different serial. Plus the nand backup had already unlaunch inside... so the backup was totally useless

when i changed the console nickname in hiya cfw or even the color theme, the console crashed with an error on black screen

    One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

    Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
