Netflix's 'The Witcher' TV series first official trailer looks fantastic

“There is never a second opportunity to make a first impression.”
― Andrzej Sapkowski, Author of The Witcher series

You've played the games. You've read the books. You... hopefully haven't watched The Hexer. But now it's finally time for us to see Netflix's take on The Witcher. Season 1 of the new series will be 8 episodes long and, as stated by executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, will be heavily based on the Sapkowski books that chronologically take place before the games. The series is set to release later this year.

If you didnt see anything wrong with the trailer in regards to the lore then you clearly did not read the books. I'm not gonna bother listing down everything wrong with it because you're probably just waiting to report me for """""being racist""""".
lore isn't just about characters ethnicities. we already got pissed at them for making characters black just so they get the approval of sjw. but to be honest there's no way they'd have cast a good yen or triss. doesn't just mean they threw the lore out the window.

I was too lazy to go back and reply to that guy specifically, and it helps because I didn't want to immediately have them get a notification in regards to them being replied to so I could hopefully delay reading a smartass reply if that post is anything worth using to ascertain their type of retort.

I'm personally chill with the CGI, it doesn't have to be perfect, it's a Netflix adaptation FFS and like a lot of stuff from Netflix, it's not going to be top notch most of the time.

I personally hope that through word of mouth, people will avoid this series like the plague, because in my honest opinion, it's not acceptable to normalize and provide incentive for companies/corporations to spew shit from their asses all over the source material for the sake of $$$ in a vain attempt to entice fanbases from other shows that are out there.

That's just my personal opinion, if you want to enjoy it, that's okay, more power to you, but I feel that because there are people that don't have a comparison to go by, it makes it seem acceptable to utterly create something totally different from the series of books and games it's supposed to be an adaptation of to begin with.

I can't even look at that pretty boy Geralt and accept him as being the Geralt many of us know and love, our Geralt is a bit gruff, busted up from all the combat he's been through, and as a stronger and not so delicate looking chin.

If that's supposed to be Ciri, then wow, they really ruined her character more so than any other, and she's supposed to be one of the main characters that the story heavily relies on; instead, she looks like this overly sensitive pouty brat that can jump off a cliff for all I care, and I'd probably be put off by her character even without a comparison, because she looks/sounds annoying as fuck.

Yen isn't even Yen, and it's like she's being made into a witch to be the most powerful witch ever, what the hell is with that bullshit?

There's a lot of stuff in that trailer that will make the existing fanbase absolutely FURIOUS and you can be guaranteed that this will be one series that a lot of people will shit on since an overwhelming number of people actually played the games. There's a reason it's on the popular platforms for quality (graphics, I'm not shitting on Nintendo, I actually love the Wii and Switch) gaming, and hell, they even went out of their way to create one of the best ports to the Xbox 360 for The Witcher 2 that was ever done for the console, because even the graphics quality is surprisingly well fucking done in regards of how well the game actually runs for having been ported from a high quality (at the time) PC game to the 360, and that release was fairly popular as far as I'm aware which lead to a lot of people buying The Witcher 3 for consoles when it came out. It's a shame that due to the controls, it would have been less and desirable to port the original Witcher game to console, and the voice acting and graphics are crude and don't hold up very well; hell, the voice acting was pretty damn bad even by that era's standards, and the enhanced patch made a lot of changes in that respect and more.

Anyways, this isn't what we expected, because with the reputation that series of games has in regards of the developers doing right by their fanbase over and over again and going above and beyond to provide quality content even after the game is released, we expect that same respect and passion to have carried over to the adaptation, even if the developers have nothing to do with the Netflix adaptation.

This is a surefire way to put off a sizable portion of the people that were going to watch it, and some people may watch a few episodes only to stop watching it because it's so far off, but I'm not arrogant enough to believe that some of the fans won't enjoy it, and that normies won't enjoy it. I just hope that the number of people that enjoy that trash is not that they had hoped for and it gets canned for being garbage because it isn't The Witcher at all.

EDIT: Corrected a sentence because I put a word in there by accident that changed the meaning of what I had intended to construe in my post.

Jesus christ man its just a trailer.

They can develop the character much much further in the first or upcoming seasons.

At least wait till the series is out and then you can judge with certainty about things

What a surprise, the opressed and kicked out of the earth elfs are black. No agenda here. Jaskier will be a transgender, Geralt Bisexual and Triss will be black.

I'm not talking about ethnicity only, there are many things wrong with the show shown in the trailer.

-Triss is not supposed to be there at all, she only appears after a long while
-Yen is at least 10 years younger than she should be and apparently isnt even a sorceress yet
-Istredd is at least 10 years younger than he should be
-Elves are now a female-only race and wear african tribal clothing and dreadlocks
-Geralt is now a bodybuilder
-Ciri is completely out-of-character
-Geralt has yellow eyes but they're not cat-eyes
-Geralt looks completely normal, instead of being so ugly and monster-like everyone is scared of him
-Nilfgaardians are literally dickheads

The mere fact that triss is there shows you they're going to butcher the storylines

Only one thing put me off, because I didn't read the books nor played the games despite having the first two in my GOG library: Geralt, when bandaged, looked massive.

I know this Superman we are seeing, but that massive over muscular body just felt weird.

That spider thing in the end, though...

Oh god! I hate book and novel snobs! Grow up! Not everything is for everyone! You type of people are the type who go into movies and talk the whole time n tell everyone why they are wrong to be enjoying it. Gtfo and go rain somewhere else!
The books are truly great, read the books, people and try to understand what kind of standards a Witcher story can be. I'm actually not an avid reader at all but I'm hooked from the start.

Nah the bullshit can be seen from the get go.

Books - Ciri was not even born during the start of the timeline, Yen and Geralt had already been long in the business, they had lived old enough they lost a bit of their sense of time.
Trailer - Yen is still the trainee witch humpback girl, there goes all the timeline. Ciri is a teenager from the start, all the character buildup is gone when almost HALF of the books are pretty much about her story!

Ciri's lazy summary for book haters (or the games):
It starts with a promise from her father making the Law of Surprise (google if you don't understand) being evoked by Geralt, exchanging her for the price of purging his father's curse, life of a child Cintra's princess, being hidden from Geralt when he went back to take her, her adventure in the Brokilon Forest and the prophesied destiny taking place making them meet each other, but now it Geralt who was against it, he took off alone while Ciri begged.
There's a bit of stories here and there, then she was caught back by her grandmother, and then the massacre of Cintra happens. She managed to escaped, and after a while, Geralt found her again, and that's where the flashback scene from Witcher 3 (where you first meet Ciri) happens. Ciri cried of Geralt and ran as soon as she spotted him, before he even noticed. It was such an iconic scene which I don't it is possible to be recreated if Ciri is a teen.
All of those happens when SHE WAS A CHILD, and the story are ways off from finishing.
She went training at Kaer Morhen, travelling to Ellander, training with Yen to control her powers while travelling to other places, witches coup, teleported and the Rats bandits saga, and so on and so forth, the Lodge being interested with her. The Wild Hunt.
The story are pretty much mostly about her and her cause, so tell me how can they fix this bullshit. At the end will only become a butchered adaptation which people can may or may not enjoy, can't even blame the newcomers because the most important points for them are the visuals. "It looks good". Still, happy watching for those who are interested.

Trailer certainly does look interesting. :)

(note: I haven't read the books and iirc I only played the intro of witcher 2)

...but going by some reactions I won't be discussing episodes on GBATemp. Man... These sorts of reactions on just a trailer? If hate to think what would happen if a plot twist were to happen that is only 99.9% the same as in the books.

I thought it looked decent. I'm pretty stoked for it and just glad it's a thing.

I wasn't expecting an book faithful adaptation, because it's an adaptation, but the folks getting all raged and judging it from the teaser trailer without having seen it is kind of crazy. It might be fun, it might be really entertaining, it might suck, it's just kind of cool for now that it's even happening.

I found a much better version.
A fan made Witcher trailer just released on July 13th.

Wow, that is a really impressive fan made work, very high quality stuff there, well shot and framed.

I'm disappointed at the missed opportunity to portray Yennefer as a hunchback.

I saw this a few days ago as well, for a fan work it looks really good, here's to hoping they manage to pull it off, it'd be amazing. It's centered around Lambert though, but that would be a nice switch for once.
