What is the fastest way to get backups running on a 2017 switch that hasn't been updated since Mario came out? How do I avoid burning fuses? Thanks.

Use the RCM exploit to load Atmosphere with signature patches. Install and play your NSP files.

You don't need to worry about fuses if you don't care about being able to downgrade. If you want to preserve fuses, install AutoRCM when installing updates.

Seriously though, you should do some reading on what will be the best solution for YOU.
1. Decide how you will enter RCM
2. Make a backup of your nand.
3. Decide if want AutoRCM or hardmod. Best/only real ways keep fuses. AutoRCM essentially bricks your switch and hardmod/modchip simulates button presses. You must always enter RCM or you will burn fuses after you update
4. Do you care about ever going online? (Ask your self)

1.I am not sure what options there are for RCM besides the dongle and I believe people used to stick aluminum foil in their switch.

1. Don’t use aluminum foil there is better ways. I went to a local shop that had a 3D printer that made me a jig for pocket change. Google for a 3D printer RCM jig file.
3. Code is written permanently for AutoRCM so the switch doesn’t boot into the stock bootloader so that a payload can be sent that uses a custom bootloader so the switch can be exploited. The exploit is not permanent and will need to be done each time you power the switch on. AutoRCM is safe because it can easily be undone, however if you turn it off improperly you run the risk of completely draining your battery. I personally installed an internally installed TrinketM0/ vs a dongle to automate the button presses and send the payload, it’s personal preference really.
4. Buy a second switch or EmuMMC/Emunand

I am reading that the AutoRCM draining the battery is a myth. Do you have to enter the recovery menu every time you put your switch on sleep mode? For instance if my switch is on sleep mode do I need to reactivate the hack or is that only if the switch gets powered completely off? How much is a cheap dongle? Will the switch hack ever be permanent in the future or is it highly unlikely? Also why do people say the switch emunand isn't a true emunand?

AutoRCM battery drain being a myth is false. I experienced this first hand and tested with AutoRCM on and off. The switch never really powers off completely and will always have a slight drain. Just more so with AutoRCM enabled. (This might have changed since implementation). If the battery completely dies in autoRCM it’s a minimum of two hrs to get it back to enough charge to be able for it enter RCM then except a payload. Sucks but it’s not really that bad. Hekate has an option to power off and works fine. It’s just when powering off from Horizon.

Sleep mode is ok, only when powering off completely do you need to re-hack it.

Not sure about a dongle never even looked at one myself. I already had a trinket for use as a modchip. You can use an Android phone with the right cable if the phone is compatible. Think there’s a list somewhere ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . Starting off with a computer or phone would be the cheapest fastest option. I used a pc for months before opting for something different.

The switch will get a permanent hack on 6/15/20XX.

Think that people saying that Emunand not being a true Emunand is because how SX implemented it but truthfully I don’t know. Someone else can answer this one.

It helps for sure, I don't really feel comfortable soldering the trinket onto the switch. So AutoRCM can only semi brick it or is it a perma brick?

You need to use one of these methods to enter RCM. Personally, I like the paperclip method (but installing AutoRCM is usually the second thing I do). You only need to use RCM to launch CFW each time you coldboot your system. If you only ever keep your Switch in sleep mode when you're not using it, you will very rarely need to enter RCM.

You can also install AutoRCM to coldboot into RCM automatically each time you power on the system after it's turned off completely. It's relatively safe and very convenient. It also prevents your fuses from being burnt, preserving the ability to downgrade later if you so choose. However, it means you should definitely keep your Switch in sleep mode when you're not using it.

Not a permanent brick, AutoRCM can be enabled and disabled at will, as long as you can send a payload. I wouldn’t suggest soldering to anyone that doesn’t have good amount of experience and a proper setup for SMD work.

Can using the paper clip wrong burn fuses? Do you personally recommend emunand? If so why? Which is better and why? Reinand or Atmosphere? Is there a freeshop for switch?

Using the paperclip method won't burn fuses. The only thing that's going to burn fuses is updating your sysNAND without AutoRCM.
I only recommend emuNAND if you want to do online play on a clean sysNAND and/or if you're on an ipatched system.
I personally recommend Atmosphere. It has the most features and is updated more frequently, particularly when new Switch system versions are released.
Freeshop for the Switch is impossible, but there is a similar app that can download and install games directly from sources like Google Drive.

About a year ago I saw a thread on here on a service that let you download pirated switch games for 25 dollars a month similar to freeshop. Will a good google search help me find the app you are talking about? What is an ipatched system? Do you use emunand or sysnand?

I don't know a lot about the freeshop-like apps, but there are free ones. I find it easier to manually download games on my computer and install them over USB. I don't like to be reliant on other apps.
An ipatched system is invulnerable to the RCM exploit. It's currently unhackable unless it's on 4.1.0. These systems started being sold around July 2018. If your Switch is not ipatched, it never will be.
I don't use online play, so I don't use emuNAND.

I bought the system back in 2017. I don't know if I would ever go online but how big of an inconvenience is emunand? Can you get banned from online play if you don't connect the console to nintendos online system?

If you never connect your system to the internet (or if you have 90DNS and/or Incognito installed) you won't be banned by Nintendo. If you plan on using online play, you need to use a clean NAND. Otherwise, you will be banned.

What if I want to update my console to play the newest games? Can I update my console without getting the update from nintendo? I want to know what the proper method of playing the latest games is without ever going online.
