Tetris Effect will be coming to PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive

Last year saw the release of Tetris Effect, a wild and trippy take on the beloved Tetris formula. It received high praise and numerous accolades, becoming a must-have PlayStation 4 exclusive. And now, PC players will have the chance to try the game out for themselves, as Epic Games Store will be bringing Tetris Effect to their platform. The PC version will support 4K and higher resolutions, uncapped framerates, and ultrawide compatibility. There will also be support for VR headsets, such as the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. Tetris Effect will launch as an Epic Games Store exclusive on July 23rd and will cost $39.99.

Exactly. Trying to undercut competition with sleezy tactics and forced exclusives inside the worst storefront available just hurts the gaming economy. "It's just business".... Yup... And if you're not a multi billion dollar corporation, you'd have closed your doors within the first year doing this.

If it were like steam and GoG, where at worst they're just mirroring each other, and the competition is more (in the eyes of consumers) based on the launcher, storefronts, and pricing, i would expect a lot less outrage over it.

Epic is forcing people to use their launcher, the same way that console makers force their respective marketplace for digital goods and online access. And using the money infusion from an even shadier company (Tencent) to bankroll exclusivity deals seemingly every other day; worse still, preying on crowd funded and indie developer titles that had no intention of being on the EGS in the first place.

Epic couldn't even get its firsy seasonal sale right, which upset end users and publishers that are, or were, working with them.

Unfortunately, this is not the same Epic that managed to make such a superior port of UT 2004, to be on the PPC Mac of all things, having Ut04 running on a power mac g5 better than it did on a then top end Athlon 64 pc with dual 6800 ultra cards in SLI. This is also not the same Epic games that, when other third parties wrote off the ps3 as a total loss, had Tim Sweeney then be like "let's see what we can do" to push out the amazing showpiece of Unreal Toruney in real time on the PlayStation 3.

This is an Epic Games that wants to chase unsustainable growth because they got a ridiculous amount of money from Fortnite players. They're throwing their weight around more assertively than a coked out Sumo wrestler.

You say it like valve doesnt have exclusives, you dont have a point, you just dont like epic. Just go ahead and admit it.

So when Disney are pissed off and want to make a competitor to netflix they will probably turn around and drop a bunch into picking up old films and tv shows that people like, releasing some of their stuff which might be rare and hard to come by elsewhere, maybe funding a few other shows (possibly by offering better terms) and ultimately trying to make a more compelling case than netflix. Is this really that different?

You're right. I dont like the Epic of now, because i remember how much better they used to be.

I do have a point, because steam only has a real exclusivity to valve games. Which, guess what? Are good.

Steam also doesn't sign over my identity and payment info to the chinese government, which tencent does daily. And tencent owns a sizable chunk of Epic Games now.

Are you really so dense?

You’re calling me dense and you don’t even realize steam is full of non valve exclusives? You’re a special kind of moron. The Chinese and American government already have access to everything they could possibly want to know about you, it’s not like they are going to start charging your credit card because you bought something from the epic store... anything you can say negative about epic applies to valve as well. And don’t go listing steam key resellers, I can just as easily list epic store resellers. Here’s a hint, games using steam works are steam only.

The game is great, just not $50 great. Maybe $15. I only played the demo though.
Demo is worth $15, full game easily makes up for $50 :v

I'm not a huge fan of EGS myself, but as often mentioned, Steam kinda dug its own grave by abandoning attempts to either develop killer titles (Half-Life 3 is pretty much a tragic story by itself) or at least acquire them. The primary reason Epic is so successful at what they're doing is because Steam doesn't try to compete at all - it's not like Gaben squad doesn't sit on piles of money to throw at developers or give them a better cut. If anything, current events on PC videogame market can be a cautionary tale on what happens when monopolist company (in this case Valve) just sits dormant for years out of assumption that there will be nobody out for them ever.

Nobody "gave" Steam a majority market share. They earned consumer trust over time and through a lot of effort put into improving and upgrading the platform. As long as Epic sticks to ham-fisted and impatient strategies, it will only continue to earn them disdain from consumers.
Correction: They earned developer trust

Their storefront is shady as hell.

Steam doesn't even need to be a part of the discussion, EGS is just objectively shitty software. Without irrational disdain for the market leader, there would be nobody defending this garbage. Epic throws around millions to secure exclusives, yet they apparently use unpaid high school interns to code their storefront.

Not my screenshot, but I did experience this same thing happening while I briefly had EGS installed for the Spellbreak beta:

They might as well have skipped the unnecessary software download and instead sell games directly from their website, FFS. Absolutely amateurish.

I have nothing against competition, but when a digital storefront like EGS doesn't have rudimentary features (shopping cart), proper anti-fraud protection (flagging someone for "buying too much at once") you have problems.

The latter of the two could be resolved by, you know, having an actual shopping cart, and that way, can buy multiple games at once, saving you the trouble. What kind of lazy, mentally inept programmers do they have working there?

Right? Christ sake, they've got over 100 games on the store now, and they still have no way to sort them. When your storefront is getting flexed on by basic features included in EA's Origin and even Nintendo's eShop, that's when you know you've fucked up big time.

But oh no, people who support EGS will get their tits up over "but it's fine just the way it is" or "they don't need to fix anything, stop bashing EGS" or some bullshit excuse. I'm sorry, but are we not allowed to critique a storefront on rudimentary features that are missing?

You are free to criticise it, whether those criticisms are accepted by others is an entirely different matter.

The anti fraud one -- again if my bank hoses up often enough and blocks purchases from my card, to a common vendor, to be delivered to my house, in my name... and I don't leave them then having slightly over zealous blocking of potential fraud is unlikely to mean too much.
The cart thing you keep harping on about. I guess it means a lot to you, and if they wanted to add it then it would not be a bad plan. Whether it means much to others that don't typically buy 15 games at once and have to press go 15 times as a result of a lack of cart is a different matter, and I am not sure what priority I would assign.

Without irrational disdain for the market leader
I don't see how having a disdain for a monopolistic, censoring entity that prevents people from exercising fundamental rights (dealing with resale frequently makes it to the highest courts in the land, and was long part of gaming) is irrational. That said while I like to have my testicles fumbled and my eyes similarly pleased as I purchase games (whilst having my finger not do as much clicking) if it allows me to search for, purchase and download then everything else is surely just gravy.

$39.99 for Tetris is far too expensive. It was too expensive when it released on PS4 and it still is too expensive on PC.
