GameStop is planning on renovating some of its retail stores in hopes of staying relevant

gamestop-inside.jpg

While classic retail staples such as Blockbuster and Toys 'R Us failed to innovate after decades of unrivaled success and ended up fading away, one company continues to struggle and desperately try to stay relevant despite changing times. After financial concerns and rumored imminent buyouts earlier this year, GameStop has announced their latest attempt to revitalize their brand. The company will be teaming up with the designer firm R/GA, and plans to renovate some of its stores in order to spice up the "GameStop experience". A few of these ideas include letting consumers play games before they buy them, changing the store layout to "appeal to gamers", offering competitive e-sports sessions in-store, and selling more retro games. R/GA will be implementing these ideas in select stores across the United States. As to whether this is enough to prevent GameStop from becoming a mere relic of the past is uncertain, as one of their previous ventures--trying to pivot into selling mobile devices--resulted in major financial losses for the retailer. It also appears that GameStop's most recent focus, trying to sell more collectibles and toys has not been significant enough to secure the company's future alone.

The partnership with R/GA’s Austin and Chicago teams is part of GameStop’s broader business transformation strategy to evolve its efforts in cultivating innovative customer-centric opportunities to bring video game culture to life in every neighborhood. GameStop’s renewed customer-first focus stems from qualitative and quantitative research led by GameStop and R/GA that identified four major motivations gaming fans have for playing video games – immersion, achievement, creativity and community.

Totally hilarious! They are getting exactly what they deserve. Years of abuse to their employees, ripping customers off, and of being as shitty as possible, and now they want to stay relevant? They sacrificed everything to try and maximize profits. Was it worth it to be a company people hate?

Older heads from the East Coast will remember a game company called Funcoland that did EXACTLY this!! Gamestop is the company that bought them out and shut them down. 20 years later..........this.

i was so poor one day and was so hungry. I sold them my copy of skyrim and a couple of other games. They barely gave me enough to buy a bacon cheeseburger and a drink. I was thankful but I felt very ripped off. A couple of years later I was in the same boat so I went back to this video game pawn shop. I offered my eu copy of heavy rain and beyond too souls. I figured I had them backed up as pkg and well I was hungry. The person at the counter refused to buy it. Said it was an eu copy and it wasn't in their system. I left the store and the person chased me down. Said I feel bad here is 7 dollars. Which I happily took as was desperate.

May gamestop die in a fire!

You must be pretty young. Gamestop had retro games for a looooooooooooooooooooong time before pulling them due to lack of sales. The lack of sales was due to their ridiculous pricing, plus far too many copies with no cover art and/or game manual.

Good riddance. I quit going there years ago after buying an ( 5$ off full price) used copy of metroid prime. Ended up in an argument with the ass manager (who was a real life version of the simpsons comic shop guy) because there was no game manual included.

I do remember finding and buying metroid fusion at gamestop almost a week before it was supposed to be released. That was kinda cool.

If I can finally try a VR headset, I will head to a GameStop just for that. eSports might be interesting, but seeing as I have a 3DS and a PC (can't take that around, it weighs a ton with those glass panels) I probably won't be able to do much. Hard to practice games you don't have, and I don't have a Switch (or XBOne, or PSanything)

They should've spent the money on offering better discounts for members

Yeah that kind of pissed me the hell off. You see i'm an Elite Pro Member of GameStop and have been before they ever turned into this craphole. Why are they a craphole you may ask? Well because they got rid of the discounts for Elite Pro Members entirely. That pissed me off so damn much. What's the point of having an Elite Pro Membership if you don't get a higher discount than regular Elite members? I mean I think that's the one with the Game Informer subscription but I think regular Elite members get it too. If not then that's the only good perk about it.

All in all Game Informer is the only thing keeping them alive right now. One of the most popular gaming magazines and of course its owned by GameStop.

I actually think if they offered delivery of games and shit to your house the same day you ordered it...kind of like a pizza place put it that way then they may actually get out of the shithole they dug themselves in. But that's just step 1 of course.

I'd like it if they created one unified system. They have one system for in-store, one system for on-line, and then yet another system for online instore (for certain things). They really need a unified experience that isn't atrocious.

But this works too.

Here's the "GameStop Experience" your brand forced on everyone:

Gamer: Can I sell this brand new game here?

GameStop: I'll give you $5 cash or $7.50 in store credit.

For years you ripped off everyone as much as you could, for as much profit as possible. Ethics and care were left behind.

Now, we live in a digital age. No one needs OR wants the middle man taking chunks of profits.
As such, YOU GameStop are now irrelevant.

Here's the new "Gamestop Experience":

GameStop: We want to sell our stocks for $15 a piece.

Investors:
I'll give you $2.50 cash or $3 in store credit.

What goes around comes around.

until gamestop stops selling used games for more than amazon sells new copies they'll stay on the fast track to going out of business, even grandmas are internet savvy these days.

I actually read the title as "removing some of its retail stores" and I was like what the fuck guys
I think they did that before, and it made sense -- quite often between their aggressive expansion, takeovers of existing businesses and whatever else and in very small areas there were 3 or more shops. Things 12 year olds could likely walk between, even with what passes for pedestrian considerations in the US.

True story.

Last month, I entered a GameStop to buy three new games.

They had two of them new. The third one, pre-owned only (just the disc in a generic box).

Of the two "new", one was not sealed (shrink-wrapped).

So, I ended buying the only one really new.

When I received it at the counter, I could see a deep puncture at the center of the box, piercing through the plastic and the paper. The clerk didn't think it was a problem at all.

My impression? If you don't care about quality, if you consider games as "greasy fast food for mindless consuption", GameStop is the place.

For me, it is just not a good place to go.

I never liked gamestop. I kept getting pestered to preorder some garbage game I got no interest in or be a member to a hipster magazine while getting discounts on used games. I'd only go for one things while my wife wanted to get a few cheap titles here and there. Hope they close eventually and soon. Funcoland was superior in everyway. Had arcades, nicer employees (in my opinion),more lively atmosphere. Now it's covered in toys and crap, with questionable employees. Most are dumber than a box of rocks. I'll crack a beer when they close, that's for sure. screw you,GameStop.

Totally hilarious!

Well, the only thing not-so-funny is that they (Game$top) hire really cool fellow humans to work under a shittttttttttttttty management system.
I genuinely feel bad for all the people who won't have a job soon.....although, it's like, two people; the rest of the fuckers I know deserve to feel the pain. For real.

They have to do that. I can't even joke, but they literally have to do that to keep their "job".

Gamestop has its ups and downs. They sold me a "New" Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and the box was open and the disc had scratches on it... But they were trying to convince me it was "NEW"... this was Way back when the game was brand new and there was no other online or people selling there shit sites. It was the only copy of it in the entire city, so I told the guy "Fuck You, this is obviously USED, it has scratches and the Box is open, but i'll buy it anyway" and i had just turned 16 and got my drivers license and everyone was looking at me like I was the one that was a douchebag

Yeah okay I can get behind feeling sorry for the employees a bit. But they also choose to work there too. My comment is directed at the company however. The company certainly does deserve the hate they receive.
