Shantae 5 opening animation, featuring Studio Trigger

A new Shantae game is on the way, having been previously announced in March of this year. In order to build hype and tease Shantae 5, which is due out later in 2019, developer Wayforward collaborated with animation studio Trigger, in order to create a short opening animation for the game. Studio Trigger is known for having animated popular anime such as Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia, and their trademark artstyle can clearly be seen in the 30-second video. The animation is also accompanied by a vocal track, sung by Shantae's voice actress, Cristina Vee. We've yet to see any gameplay, but Wayforward has set up a good track record when it comes to the series, with previous entries Half-Genie Hero and Pirate's Curse. Shantae 5 will release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Apple Arcade, in 2019.

The theme and art style of these games has always really impressed me. I really want to get into them as they clearly have high production value, but:

There is just so much anime T&A going on that I feel like I shouldn't even be playing it. Like, the idea is pretty fun and innocent (half genie that dances to transform), and it's great to see a game that features a largely female cast, but holy shit do they tread close to the line w.r.t. character designs, animations, and poses.

But maybe that's just me being a prude.

To be fair, Shantae's character design hasn't changed much since 2002, she's a belly dancing half-genie, and belly dancers are meant to be titillating. There's a lot of fan service in the game and the media surrounding it, but I think it's fairly tastefully done and doesn't overshadow the fact that Shantae is easily one of the best "old school" platformers around. Prude or not, you should most certainly give it a go. Half-Genie Hero is a masterpiece compared to most modern platformers. It finally introduced me to a series that I've been familiar with since the GBC days and never really played. I liked it so much that upon finishing it I immediately went on a trip down nostalgia lane with The Pirate's Curse, and fully intend to play all of the installments I've missed over the years. It's a real throwback to how platformers used to be made, with a great musical score, addictive gameplay and great aesthetic appeal to boot. If you feel dirty afterwards just take a shower, but don't miss out on a great game.

Well, that's kinda what Shantae is all about: cute monstergirls, lots of belly dancing, and arabic costumes that reveal more than they hide :D

To be fair, the series never really crosses ecchi territory - it's all in good fun, and while there's a lot of "interesting" visual design choices, the story and tone of the games is all safe and family-friendly. In fact, one of the strong points of Shantae is that it treats its mild sexual/suggestive overtones just as another natural part of its world, rather than overfocusing on fanservice or trying to pander to player's boners at any point - that, in my opinion, separates the series from something like Xenoblade or Fire Emblem Awakening

Oh, I don't know about that - the main menu in Risky's DLC in HGH is a bathtub scene.

Considering the fact that Shantae was designed by the wife of the game's creator I don't have a problem with that. There are two other reasons why I don't have a problem with that, but I won't get into those. :creep:

Still not sure to this day what to make of Kill la Kill...
(However.. the way they draw eyes (remembering Ryuukos) is incredibly interesting.
Can't recall seeing this * shape anywhere else so far.

Also whatever happened to that Shantae GBA Entry anyways ?
