firmware doesn't matter if it is unpatched, if it is patched then you can do anything above 4.1.0 right now. Unpatched unit cost more than patched.
Cool. So i can buy an unpatched secondhand Switch with OFW 8.1.0 installed and i will be able to install fully workable CFW without exceptions, right? Much appreciate your input

I'm using Hekate 5 with SX OS so I can switch between that and my Linux partition when need be but I'm unable to boot to Stock form Hekate 5
When I select launch>stock it just loops me back to Hekate

I placed the whole sept folder from the latest atmosphere into my SD card and added the following line to the hekate_ipl.ini file

[Stock]
stock=1
emummc_force_disable=1

but no luck,
anybody has any idea as to what to add?
(I would like it to be full stock and not booting into RCM is not a good solution for my current needs since I want to install a trinket m0 to also boot into RCM with a payload being pushed)
thank you for your time

Thank you Draxzelex for the link.

I went through the link and all I find is a procedure to create a emuMMC if you have a RCM hackable or unmatched switch.

Will you please let me know, for my case ( patched switch, have to use pegascape web exploit to go to Hekate and from Hekate i have to launch CFW (emuNAND))......If I reboot my switch from cfw (ams 0.92) ..It goes to Hekate auto boot.

Is it safe for my switch to create a emuMMC through Hekate and ....Update that emuMMC to 8.1.0 firmware?...I also want to know how can I update my CFW (ams 0.92) fw to 8.1.0 with the help of choidujoirnx?...I know I have to be careful not to select AUTO RCM option....But as I said...I don't know much about these systems........Do we have a guide anywhere which can help me setting up a emuMMC and upgrade that??

I don't care about online gaming or any Nintendo BAN.....I just want the nsp to be installed which at the moment I am not able to install due to the old firmware 4.1.0(ams 0.92)

I hope you got my point

Hey, since Im not able to launch ReiNX, I wanted to ask if I can use Atmosphere to install NSPs (game backups). Or do I have to use a custom Atmosphere build?

Please help me with the following questions/doubts:

1. If we run atmosphere and gold leaf inside the atmosphere then we can install any .NSP files and just play them? Do we need to sign the NSP files with any keys of our switch or we could use any NSP files?

2. I have an unpatched Switch on 4.1.0. I have installed Atmosphere and gold leaf but I don't know how to run higher version games. How can I update my Switch from here? Do I use Choidujour and update without burning fuses? Do I use emunand and update the emunand only?

3. What is this warning about replacing the kip file before updating my Switch. Will it make my cartridge slot permanently unusable? even if I have a clean NAND to downgrade later if I do make this mistake of not replacing the kip file?

4. Can I find this kip file in any XCI files I can get on the internet?

What I want to really do is just this:

5. Have my switch play backups, I don't care to ever go online, I don't care if Nintendo bans me ( I did make a clean NAND backup). I just want to be able to play latest backups upto 8.1.0 WHat would be the most simple way for me to achieve this and if you could point me to a simple step by step guide.

Ok, so TL;DR version is that booting stock through hekate is safe if I want to use AutoRCM, for now, for all we know.

I was thinking about keeping fuses for Caffeine, but then I'd need two emunands. I don't see Caffeine being any more convenient than RCM injecting. If there was a possibility of a persistent coldboot into CFW, then I'd wait, but I don't think that's in the works for 4.1.0. That fake account linking through Kefir seems easiest. Although I'm not a fan of using random Russian hack packs, I think I'll be okay this one time.

Thanks for clarifying all the info! I think for now, the best setup would be to keep sysnand updated and online, and emunand offline (obviously) for other things.
Here are more definite answers to some of your questions:

If using Hekate to boot "OFW", the boot chain isnt entirely stock. It even might be detectable - but Nintendo doesnt seem to do anything about it - not even against full Atmosphere. Odd. Interesting. Read up on the details in the thread linked. :)

What I did was download Atmosphere from SDSetup which has a Stock configuration pre-included and launch that without any issues.

The link I gave you was a guide for everything from setting up emuMMC to updating it.

Atmosphere by itself does not support installing .NSP files of content you do not own. However with these sweet patches, it will be able to install any .NSP file.

Please help me with the following questions/doubts:

1. If we run atmosphere and gold leaf inside the atmosphere then we can install any .NSP files and just play them? Do we need to sign the NSP files with any keys of our switch or we could use any NSP files?

  1. You need these sweet patches in order to install and launch .NSP files of content you pirate
  2. While you will need to update your firmware to play more recent games, ChoiDujour only supports up to firmware 6.1 and is a hassle to use. ChoiDujourNX is much easier to use and supports all firmware versions. Since your console is not patched, you do not need to setup emuMMC for updating your firmware. You can simply update your sysMMC instead
  3. There is a one-time update for the cartridge slot on firmware version 4.0 or higher that renders the slot unusable on firmware versions below 4.0. If your console is on firmware 4.0 or higher before using this kip, then your slot is already updated
  4. This kip file does not exist in any .XCI files unless you're referring to a different kip file
  5. Follow bullet point #2

I'm about to hack my 5.1 Switch for the first time using the tutorial here, from the FAQ on the OP of this thread for Atmosphere: (which I can't link because I'm new)

I'm assuming if I follow this tutorial closely (using fusee, and suggested SDSetup settings from that website), and following their instructions for backing up, that I'll have a clean backup and not "dirty" my sysNAND. If not, at what point within that setup guide will I want to stop and setup emuMMC so that I can keep my sysNAND clean and then do all the dirty stuff on the emuNAND. I'm guessing right after the backup step?

If not, what will I want to do differently to either keep my sysNAND clean, or get it clean again after setting up my emuNAND?

What I want to do is leave my sysNAND clean at 5.1 (not interested in online at all and largely plan on leaving my Switch offline/airplane mode on the sysNAND) and then do all the hacking on my emuNAND (Update it to 8.x w/o burning fuses, Incognito, and able to run backups).

I'm not largely concerned about bans if I mess up, but I think my console would maintain more value if it weren't banned by Nintendo and I'm still holding out some hope on warmbooting for the 4.1+ firmwares. In the future I might try to just update the sysNAND to play online, but if I can keep everything clean now on 5.1 -- or at least cleanup after getting everything set up -- that would be ideal.

Anyways, thanks ahead of time for reading and any help, advice, or clarification anybody can give me. I just don't understand what will dirty my NAND and what will keep it clean.

If your goal is to keep your sysNAND clean, then you want to make the emuNAND before you do any other hackery.

If not, what will I want to do differently to either keep my sysNAND clean, or get it clean again after setting up my emuNAND?
The only good way to have a clean NAND is to restore a clean NAND backup. That's one of the reasons why you want to make the NAND backup as soon as possible: so it's before it gets dirty.

If you do not plan on using online play, then there is no reason for you to use an emuNAND. Instead, put your clean NAND backup somewhere safe (preferably compressed and somewhere like Google Drive), and you can use that clean NAND backup later if you do ever decide to use online play.

If you decide there's no need for an emuNAND, which appears to be the case, then these are your steps:
  1. Make a clean NAND backup
  2. Keep the Switch offline
  3. Install 90DNS and/or Incognito to your sysNAND, if you're paranoid
  4. Update to 8.1.0 using ChoiDujourNX. You can install AutoRCM during the update process at this step if you want to a.) preserve your fuse count, and/or b.) Want a more convenient way of entering RCM.
If you want to preserve your fuse count but don't want to use AutoRCM, then you can use an emuNAND in the way you originally planned instead.

5.x-7.x will probably get a warmboot option in the future, assuming you haven't already connected the Switch to the internet and received the browser supernag. If you prefer the browser warmboot method over the RCM method, then you should either a.) keep your fuses low with AutoRCM, or b.) use an emuNAND instead of updating your sysNAND.

Thank you so much. This was really helpful to expand my understanding. I appreciate it a lot. Here is what I am about to do next:

1. Going to use ChoiDujourNX and update my Switch's SysNAND to 8.1.0 (or whatever is the latest version) I believe that my unpatched Switch will retain the RCM exploit and will work with the jig the same way it currently does on 4.1.0?

2. Should I just ignore this "WARNING WARNING WARNING: Running a FIRMWARE >= 4.0.0 WITHOUT REPLACEMENT FS_XXX_nogc.kip1 ACTIVE WILL MAKE YOUR CARTRIDGE PORT UNUSABLE ON EARLIER FIRMWARES." ? Since my Switch is already on 4.1.0, it doesn't apply to me right? If I downgrade from 8.X to 4.1.0 using my clean NAND then the cartridge slot will remain usable, right?

3. Where do I copy these sweet patches?

4. One unrelated question. Is the RCM exploit truly unpatchable by Nintendo without physical access to my Switch? If they break this exploit then the hackers will continue to find ways to re-enable it?

1. In my understanding you are not supposed to run CFW and backup the NAND as soon as you load Hekate. I could be wrong though. Don't install any XCI or NSP yet though. I know for sure that once you install those then your NAND becomes unclean. Make a NAND backup asap.

2. Not sure lol. I think just delete it from your memory card. It might still leave log files on your NAND.

actually i dont really understand about installing cfw, and i bought a switch with cfw and already have some game in there, so i dont really know about XCI or NSP.
if i dont have a nand backup, do i still can change cfw? from atmospehre to sx pro?
