So a bit of background. I decided recently to buy and hack a N2dsxl for my mom. I only see my parents about once a year and I thought it would be cool for her to be able to play all the old games we used to play when I was a kid. I've already hacked my own N3dsxl and had no issues using the seedminer method. I'm definitely a noob and although I'm good at following instructions, I have no context for a lot of the steps I was following. In other words, please keep that in mind for any responses. Simple and obvious terms to the lot of you, may not mean jack to me.

That being said, I have made a good effort scouring the forums and of course google, and have not found anyone that's had a similar problem. Not to say someone hasn't, but I've spent the last few days searching (a bit obsessively) and I haven't found anything. Maybe I'm not searching the right terms? I'm really frustrated.

I used New Super Ultimate injector and then FBI to install the cia files. Maybe there's another method to directly inject rom files, but I haven't heard of any. Anyways, my problem is this: Out of the 200 or so nes games I've installed, quite a few (not all) look like garbage when you play them. It seems that with the games that have a scrolling screen, the screen goes dark when your character is moving and the screen is scrolling, then if you stop it will brighten up again to a pretty noticeable extent. I get that it's not game breaking. The games are totally playable, sure, but it looks terrible. I have tried ever possible combination of settings on every injection method that's available on NSUI. It's driving me crazy. My 3ds runs every single game perfectly so I'm really hoping it's not just the 2ds hardware causing the issue. Also, I haven't started injecting games for any other console yet, so hopefully it's just nes games and not the lot of them cause then I will have wasted about $300.

Hopefully I'm explaining this in a way that makes sense cause I'm not sure I can explain it much better than that, but if needed maybe I can take and post a video.

I mean guess if i gotta suck it up, I gotta suck it up. Like I said, it's not game breaking, but I did spend good money on this project, and I'd like it to run as close to perfect as it can. So if any of you awesome people have a fix, or even just some suggestions I would sure appreciate it.

Is your power saving mode turned on? If so, try turning it off. I had a similar issue with the brightness changing when playing DS games.

I'd really rather not run through an emulator. Guess there's just something about loading the games from the home screen that feels more "official".

So, while I did figure out I was running NSUI Beta 26, and 27 has a few features than 26, I'm still stuck. I'm testing with Blaster Master which I've installed and deleted more times than I want to think about. It may just be time to move on and hope for the best with the snes cias.

I am still open to ideas though, should anyone have any more.

You can use Injection method other than "NES Virtual Console" if the official Nintendo NES emulator doesn't work.

I've tried all of the injection methods available on NSUI. VirtuaNES for 3ds, RetroArch FCEUmm forwarder, RetroArch QuickNES forwarder, and RetroArch Nestopia forwarder. All of them have this same issue.

I have this game on my n3DSXL but never played it until today. Jumping tank?

Anyway, what seems to be the problem with this particular game?

Edit 1 - On the VirtuaNES emulator as a baseline test, I see some green bars appear at the top edge that look out of place, and some slow downs in intensive fire fights.

Edit 2 - I see. The background darkens and lightens whenever you move and jump.

Yup! Jumping tank. lol It was one of my favorites. It's not just that particular game, just one of many that are having this issue. When your character is moving and the screen is scrolling it dims, then brightens if you stop moving.

Not all games that have a scrolling screen have this issue. But most do. Even RPGs like Dragon Quest are.

I used the exact same method I did when I hacked my n3dsxl and all the games run just fine. Which is why I'm wondering if maybe it's just the differences in hardware between the n2dsxl and the n3dsxl.

It may just be a bad rom period. I know of one other which no matter where ya get it from or what you play it one there are issues. more graphic. that game is, Parasol Stars - The Story of Bubble Bobble 3

I can verify Blaster Master (U) [!].nes (52BCF64A) has the lightening-darkening flicker whenever the tank moves and stops. This might be how the game naturally animates motion frame which is probably more pronounce on relatively dim LCD displays versus CRT or plasma TVs. :/

Is the NES emulator in TWiLightMenu++ worth considering?
On the nesDS emulator through TWiLight Menu, this game runs pretty decent. Image is a tad blurry but perfectly playable at the 320x240 resolution. Yup, screen darkening happens in motion but not as noticeable as this emulator has a default darker tone than the native 3DS emulators.

@frognamedjethro, is your n3DSXL's upper screen an IPS? If it is, this could explain why you don't notice this effect due to the display's higher color contrast and brightness versus TN.

I was thinking this as well. It's a bit of a long shot, considering the rarity of the IPS screens (you would think that most people on here who have them, went out of their way to get them), but it's a possible explanation.

Well I did some research and you guys are indeed correct. Somehow I got lucky and my n3dsxl has an IPS (when you hold them both at an angle there is an obvious difference between the screens). Maybe I'm being picky, but it's still kind of a bummer.

I'll probably just go on with my life and stop worrying about it... At least not all the games look shitty. I do wish I'd have known before I bought it though. Thanks guys for trying to help me. You're all awesome.
