Remedy Entertainment reacquires publishing rights to Alan Wake
Remedy Entertainment, the developers of 2010's cult classic Alan Wake, have recovered the publishing rights to their game. In a press release from Remedy, the company revealed that they had received a royalty fee for their previously released games, in the amount of €2.5 million. They mention that, in relation to the royalty earnings, the rights to publishing Alan Wake have fallen back to Remedy, after being in Microsoft's hands the past nine years. Previously, Alan Wake was delisted from digital storefronts in 2017, after Microsoft did not renew the game's music licenses, though it was later restored at the tail-end of 2018.
While Remedy owned the rights to the IP of Alan Wake, and there was even internal talks of a sequel being developed (until it was canceled), publishing rights to a theoretical Alan Wake 2 would have lied with Microsoft. Now, that's not the case, which means that we might perhaps see a sequel in the future. Currently, however, Remedy Entertainment is working on their latest game, Control.
For its first half-year period of 2019, Remedy Entertainment Plc records approximately 2.5 million euros of royalties from previously released games as one-time income. The royalties are paid to Remedy during the second half-year period of 2019. In relation to this, the publishing rights of Alan Wake games are reverted to Remedy.
This one-time income does not significantly affect Remedy’s full year result, because as previously reported, the Company continues to invest in developing new games, the success of which have a greater impact on the Company’s full year revenue and result.
