Nintendo has updated the Wii U firmware to 5.5.4

You thought it was dead, but the Nintendo Wii U lives on. Following an update that initially was just for European regions, the update is also supposedly to be made available in North American and Japan, according to patch notes. However, currently, Nintendo of America's site does not note any new firmware revisions, nor do we know if the update will actually come to non-EU systems. At this point, we have no idea what 5.5.4 changes, besides standard stability. The last time we saw an update for the Wii U was all the way back in September 2018, for version 5.5.3 which was yet another stability update. If you still value using your Wii U, you might want to wait on updating, to see what this changes in terms of homebrew.

  • Version number: 5.5.4
  • Release date: June 24th 2019 (North America) / June 25th 2019 (Europe, Japan)
  • Regions: Europe / North America / Japan
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

The following titles were updated: VersionData, and Wii U Menu.

Total titles sizes: 102482052

SOAP TitleHash: 0B1C2469FA99869CFFD6642AD035D006

That's very weird... maybe the 5.5.4 update was just a test to see how much consoles are online at that moment!

Well.. If it proves to be a booby-trap to remotely kill all modded consoles at any time, this swede goes safe. ;)

It was awesome if you could connect your network to a VPN (Europe server) and check if your console can update.

That's incredible!
So we can conclude Nintendo tracks the source IP's and where they are connecting from....

I can access the E-shop and play MK8 online. So I'd assume it's not banned.

That's right..
Probably what 5.5.4 changes is not applicable on every country...
so they exclude the countries where they did not want to release the update.

Could be.. We'll just have to wait and see..

Until then I'll keep working on getting my generic NES, SNES and N64 Usb controllers working in HIDtoVPAD. Been at it for a few months now.

One of the sites that weren't blocked on the school's network was some file uploading sites. I would upload some games, write down the URL and take it to school one day.

It was easy to bypass some of the restrictions, as one of the admins left a registry key in the administrative shares drive, which allowed me to get around the blocking of some sites.
