Hello. I converted all of the audio I needed to edit from BCSTM to WAV with the vgmstream, split and merged WAVs how I wanted, while preserving the audio specs, then converted them back and put into the game.
The in-game issue: when it's time to play back a modded audio file it does not do so, and additionally, the game goes wack and locks up the controls. This doesn't occur when I, for instance, swap that modded file with the unmodded one that came from a Japanese ROM, even if it is a vanilla dummy 1kb file. Just in case, I tried making the undub into a LayeredFS mod, yet result were no different.
Then I tried using VGAudio and BrawlLib to see if they'll output different BCSTMs from the ones that vgmstream produced, but no – they're 1:1 exactly the same. Maybe none of them work well with the single channel audio or 32728 Hz frequency for some reason, either input or output.
The attachment is three sample audio files: edited BCSTM, edited WAV and vanilla BCSTM from the Japanese ROM.

The undub is completely done, except for the proper WAV -> BCSTM conversion part.
If someone can point out if I'm doing something wrong and give a tip on how to proceed, I'll be eternally grateful. Thank you for your time.

Edit: *snip*

Edit 2: Alternatively, I included links to the whole undub along with audio that needs to be converted properly in the samples archive if you might wish to try your luck with it yourself.

Edit 3: Just noticed that headers of the modded files are consistently different from the unmodded ones. Fixing headers manually in hex editor doesn't seem to help.

Right, so in preparation to start undubbing the 3DS part of Professor Layton series, I cracked this thing down finally.
As it turns out, I had to first use any tool that does WAV -> BRSTM conversion, then pass the files through Soneek's broken converter to change the header from BRSTM to BCSTM, and then change four values to fix the header in those: A0 18, AC 20, BC 01, C1 00. In other words, replace this:
Code:
14 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 02 41 00 00 16 00 00 00 7F 40 00 00 00 01 00 00 0C 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 01
with this:
Code:
18 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 02 41 00 00 20 00 00 00 7F 40 00 00 00 01 00 00 0C 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00
.

Release in a day or or two on that iso site + that du site.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
