Hacking Interested in hacking / soft-modding my 1st-gen / ambassador edition 3DS (9.4.0-21E | EUR)

So, I currently have a 3DS which has received extremely little use over the years. It was bought on launch, but shortly afterwards I stopped really gaming so it has sat in its box for ages. Once in a while I would take it out, update it and then put it back in. I did make use of the Ambassador program, so I have all the ambassador content installed.

It is currently on 9.4.0-21E -- which was when I last tried to use it / update it.

It has never been modded (hard-mod or soft-mod). It is the European version (I understand that this matters).

So I have some questions:

1. How can I soft-mod this to run CFW/homebrew? Is it best to stay on the current version I have on it, or update it first to the latest version (11.10.0-43)?

2a. I was told Frogminer (https://3ds.eiphax.tech/frogminer.html) is the best approach. Is that correct? I do not have a homebrew entry point (that I know of).
2b. Is the homebrew entry point only possible through Steel Diver: Sub Wars?

3. My intention is to end up installing the Luma3DS CFW (as I was told it was the best). Will this process wipe my access to the Ambassador content?

Edit: #1 If I want to backup my device, in case I want to return it to stock ROM/functions, is it possible? Will I be automatically banned from eShop / Online anyway?

yes you can hack it, but don't update it right now, with the firmware you have you can use soundhax

and no, in your case frogminer and co will be harder than using soundhax, so again, dont update your ofw

and you wont loose anything while hacking it

Nothing gets wiped that's currently on a 3ds

shadow, yeah, like decrypting the stuff with steelminer isnt way longer than using soundhax?

grcd, well its not really a whole lot harder (it is a little, but just a little), but its longer, basically you need to have an encryption cracked in the process, and it need some computer horsepower to do it

Note that this tool requires a PC with a powerful graphics card to break your device’s DSiWare encryption. If you do not have access to one of these, there also exists several online helper services where a volunteer running automated software will do this for you.

so there is no question that you better use soundhax on lower firmware if you have the possibility...

using soundhax method you are good in a handfull of minutes

With ntrboot, the firmware version does not matter so updating before, during or after all work once boot9strap is installed. But that method does require a flashcart.

Edit: So updating/not updating at a certain point is not really an issue with the 3Ds.

Ok so installing cfw won't get you banned from the eshop/online the only ways to get banned are

1. Cheating online
2. Playing a online game before it's official realese (not a problem anymore as no new games coming out)
3. Using a stolen credit card online.

So just go ahead and install cfw by whatever route you choose to go then update to latest fireware and you will be good.

i would add that if you are paranoid (as i am) to use homebrew as .3dsx with the homebrew launcher (launched with rosalina) and not install them as CIA, so from nintendo view they dont see you launching weird app that are not supposed to exist
(i said paranoid because there seem to have no ban from launching those cia, but personnaly, to avoid potential trouble, i prefere using homebrew launcher)

Because buying an inexpensive flashcart makes sense to play DS games. If it does double duty and makes firmware versions irrelevant, that can be very worth it for convenience reasons.

yeah, right, so when his question is "how to hack my 3DS with 9.4" better give hime a solution that is going him to search for a card (potentially buying a timebombed one) and then wait days to receive it

The point is that it is nice to have alternatives and all of the information in front of you in order to make an informed decsion, that is why the 3ds guide mentions it.

We do not really know what OPs motivations/skill levels are at and so have no reason to hide information. It is for them to decide if that route is or is not for them since they are the one who actually makes the decision. We should just present the available informatio with the pros/cons of each.

Sorry, to be annoying, but this debate actually confused me more than it helped me.

1. Should I buy a flashcart? If yes, which?
2. Should I update my device? Or stay on my current firmware?

If you can help me, I will do the process today -- unless if I first need to buy something else. Many thanks!

on the firmware you are right now you can hack fast and free, but if you want you can buy the flashcard, it could help you later hack any firmware and play DS backups

Base on your firmware, use the soundhax entry point to hack it.

So, which flashcart is advisable for this purpose (including DS support)? And do flashcarts allow you to play 3DS games as well, or is it only for hacking?

Thank you! I see this method does not need any game downloaded from the store, or specific game on a cartridge in order for the exploit to work. Or a flashcart.
