Gaming Nintendo Switch Firmware 8.1

No, this is not a typo. Firmware 8.1 is now out for the Nintendo Switch and it updates TSEC which pretty much means all CFW is broken if you update. This even includes the recently released emuEMMC so do not update until further notice. If you do update, you can always downgrade with ChoiDujour but that is a bit of a pain. Anyway, better use something like Airplane Mode, 90DNS, Incognito, Stealth Mode, or even straight up removing the Wi-Fi settings so you do not download and accidentally install the system update.

For people who unknowingly update early and wonder why CFW is broken, it is a good warning. And sept has to be updated to support the new keys which could take a while. Either way, its better to wait for CFW to update than update early and wait for CFW to be updated unless you're a hardcore online player that barely dabbles in CFW.

They are trying to do the best to protect their system with nvidia collaboration, it's impossible to fix because it's a hardware exploit and the devs always gona can dump and debug any firmware release so always gona get broken again, but they can make hard the process (firmware 7.x for example) and let people a lot of time without CFW.

Anyways there are limited moves by N, if they try to apply hardware fixes (they have a little number of fuses for apply little patches to the Tegra) they gona lose all of their available fuses and can't apply more patches.

This is the reason because they are changing the keys I guess, meanwhile they are preparing a better solution, anyways, not all CFW have sept as dependency, SX OS have the keys hardcoded in the code, so they need extract and replace it for the next release for example.

For now they want out all RCM exploitable devices, if you send for warranty any exploitable switch they gona return you a ipatched device.

There are two great and big companies working together, for now we think that they can't do anything for patch the RCM exploit but I always have a doubt, I didn't get deep into Tegra X1 and the fuseé geleé exploit but honestly I get impresed with their move on 7.x and I'm sure that they are working on another fix like this, meanwhile they try to make harder the CFW changing the keys, that for now, are broken by sept but with this sept need get updated, so they stop the CFW atleast for hours and obligate the scene devs to work on the update to make it working again.

But whats stopping nintendo from (this is kinda of a stupid idea) cranking out constant firmware updates to change tsec keys?

They just stop CFW for a little time and watch how scene devs response to their changes, as I said on the other post and @Adran_Marit said, they have limited fuses to burn so I don't understand their moves changing only the TSEC keys, they know that gona get broken again and fuck a fuse for only a short time without CFW.

Anyways this firmware version number are suspicious to me (8.1.0), they up the minor version (that on software usually means that this version have a new (atleast little) features) but don't say nothing on the changelog about new features, so I think that they implement new methods against scene (telemetry or cfw detection improvements for example) obviusly they don't say nothing about this changes because their interest are detect and ban all hacked switches possible, but I'm sure that soon the ReSwitched team appear with more info about the changes and not only for the new TSEC keys.

For a real little fixes or stability improvements, we usually only up the micro version number (8.0.2 for example) but it just my theory I can be wrong here.

Yes, the ReSwitched team always make a diff and reversing all new things added to new versions, so on a few days we gona see that they really change on this version, for now the best thing that we can do if we like the CFW it's avoid the update like @SciresM advice.
