Been on a modding craze with every console lately and been installing CFW for over a decade. Finally got around to softmodding my PS3 with the current Rebug CFW. Was testing it out by burning an ISO of Digital Devil Saga and only after a huge headache from finally getting it to work on the PS3, it did. However, in my process, I had 3 seperate 4+GB files of the same backup. Deleted one, caused me to no longer be able to boot it for some reason, but that's another problem for another time.

Should mention, I have a launch console, the oldest of the old grandaddy phat boys of a ps3. Can't remember the model # off the top of my head and don't want to grab my PS3 to check, but it's whatever was released day 1 in the US. Somehow, hasn't died on me yet but now I'm getting worried.

After trying to get anything to work with my backup, I went to the internet and luckily for me, all information on the PS3 modding scene is pretty ancient at this point. So I installed webMAN in hopes it'd boot this damn game without having to rip it again, and instantly my PS3's fan went batshit. Continued to search around, saw some info on stopping the crazy fan problem but nothing worked. So I uninstalled it from the webMAN menu and my fan chilled out finally. However, now after about 5~ minutes from booting, the fan goes bonkers again. All I want to do is play my damned PS2 library without having to buy a new RBG cable for my (unmodded, because I don't have that 007 game to exploit it) PS2...

Figured my options were:

A) Ask here, one of the few active modding scenes for any dead console of how to possible fully remove whatever webMAN did to my phatboi

B) Format my PS3 and start from scratch

C) Hoping to god my PS3 doesn't YLOD after all these goddamn years before having to manually repair it (which I'd rather not, and have a feeling there's another option before I tear it apart)

As for option B, I'm curious if formatting it will wipe everything and cause it to go back to OFW where I'd have to mod it all over again, or if it's now officially stuck on CFW or at least an easily exploitable console (like the 3DS is after modding the arm9 shit). Not worried about reinstalling CFW honestly, I'd just rather go back to trying to get my damned ISO to boot instead of starting over...

And before anybody says it, I have absolutely 0 intentions of buying a new PS3 since I haven't touched this one in ages and it worked extremely well until installing webMAN... Seen a lot of "buy a new ps3" answers while searching "webman ps3 fan problem" online... If my PS3's a goner, I won't get a new one, but I'd still like to keep it working. Isn't the thermal paste, isn't the fan itself; this all happened as soon as webMAN was installed, which I should've looked into further before doing so...

[edit] also, not trying to sound like a dick. Been screwing with this thing for 4 hours now and searching online for answers, not counting the time it took to rip DDS, only to have it work for a minute and then my dumbass causing it to not work :(

UPDATE: everything's working now and I found out ManaGunZ basically does the same thing I wanted out of webMAN. For anybody else who has this problem where after installing webMAN your PS3's fan won't calm down even after screwing with webMAN's settings, uninstall it and try out ManaGunZ.

So, which model is your console?

The later fats have a known syscon bug where, if software fan control is used, it will default to maximum at power on until a new value is loaded - but from your description, this isn't the case and rather sounds like the need for a cleaning & thermal paste replacement (especially if the air doesn't feel appropriately hot for the reported temperature)

And, how did you remove webman? (the proper way is using its url command, possibly after setting fan control back to hardware/syscon if it's one of the affected models)

As for option B, I'm curious if formatting it will wipe everything and cause it to go back to OFW where I'd have to mod it all over again, or if it's now officially stuck on CFW
It won't affect the operating system (which for NAND consoles isn't even on the disk), if you want to remove CFW you simply update (twice) to official

1- Did you check the temperatures of CPU and GPU?
2- Have you changed the thermal paste (very important since it's an old model)?
3- Webman has a fan controller, you can mess with the settings. Also Webman makes the PS3 fan spin faster on PS2 titles by default, you can just go there and turn it off and leave it to syscon to control the fan by default.

Seems to have worked itself out. After uninstalling webMAN and the fan still going insane I gave up and finally went to bed. Woke up and PS3's running fine for two hours now.

Still curious why webMAN freaks my fan out though just from it being installed. I can live without the tool either way.
