I did a quick search and didn't see anything about it, so here I am.
I just got a Wii, and I would like to know if a class 4 SanDisk SD card quick enough for the Wii.

Thank you in advance.

Hello. :)

Yes it is.
For Loading Homebrew Apps + maybe Gamecube Backups - YES
For Wii Backups - please use an external USB HDD.

Thank you.:)

That was quick. Thanks!
I'll place my order.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

That was funny, I went to order it and a SanDisk Ultra class came up for less then the class4. I'm getting the Ultra class, just for the better warranty. I know the Wii can't use the extra speed from the card itself.

The higher speed the better. I know for certain the Wii can benefit for higher speeds than 4, as a Class 4 speed SD card or lower can create issues when, for example, emulating Sega CD or PC-Engine CD games. Games such as Lunar Eternal Blue suffer from micro-stutters when loaded from SD Cards with lower speed.

Also, stuff like the Homebrew Channel also loads much faster. Making screenshots in emulators it's also snappier. I made comparisons when I got a class 10 32GB SD Card to replace my old Class 4 8GB, and it was faster all around.

Well what I got was a SanDisk Ultra. Class 10 with 80MB/s read, so I don't think I'll have any issues. I'll just be happy to get my old SD card out of the Wii.
I have one that's a couple years old that I really use for either testing readers and on a temp as needed bases. It's had a lot of use in multiple devices, I really don't know how much longer it's going to last.

Hi all, I'm going to buy a SD card for my WII (64 or 128 Gb still to decide), I just wanted to confirm if getting a UHS-3 instead of a UHS-1 is pointless and so better going for the latter.
For UHS-3, I found this one: https://www.amazon.it/Samsung-PRO-Plus-memoria-MB-SD64H/dp/B08DYF19PC/ref=sr_1_19?__mk_it_IT=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&dchild=1&keywords=scheda+di+memoria+64+gb&qid=1611289223&s=pc&sr=1-19&th=1

I guess that the Wii, du to its technology, has few chances to take advantage of such advanced features, am I right?

Final question: micro SD vs standard SD, any difference or do they both work?

Thank you.

A good Choice,it is ok.:)
Please note.they bigger the SD Card (64 GB up) they slower they will "react".
It is not really "bad" but noticable. So 64 GB is the "best" Choice for maximum Size, but not necessary.
Your Games should be stored on an USB Device like an HDD and Homebrew is not as big.
Also Emulators/Roms can be stored on the HDD.

Please avoid microSD Cards, they can cause Troubles (mainly the Adapters).

And finally,the most impoortant Thing:
Please check your Wii´s System Software Version,it should be 4.0x or higher.
Otherwise your big SD Card will be not detected, because the Wii does not know about (big) SDHC Cards.:)

If your Wii is unmodded, please do not use this Card you want to buy for it
and use instead a 1 - 8 GB SD Card for the SD Card based Exploits like Letterbomb please.
It is possible, that your Exploit fails with the big Card.
You can use the bigger Card after that Modding by simly copy the Content over.

Good Luck.
Thank you.:)

Thank you! :) I wasn't aware of this, so I'll opt for a 64 Gb one (and maybe even 32 Gb would suffice).
Just out of curiosity... would a UHS-3 make any difference instead of a cheaper UHS-1?

Your Games should be stored on an USB Device like an HDD and Homebrew is not as big.
Also Emulators/Roms can be stored on the HDD.
They are, both Wii and GC isos are stored on a HDD. I was thinking of a large SD card because at the moment emulators and the related roms only work from there and not from my HDD, I will make new attempts though.

Please avoid microSD Cards, they can cause Troubles (mainly the Adapters).
Thanks for confirming!

Thanks for all the advice, it's soft modded and updated to the latest version. :)

Good Luck.
Thank you.:)

Vielen danke!

It CAN.Cases where you maybe notice a little "Speed Difference":

- Covers "loading" for Example in USBLoader GX
- Roms for the Emulators
- some Applications on the Homebrew Channel

This is meant as all these Things where installed on a SD Card and when you try different SD Card Types/Brands.

But it is not like compare a HDD to an SD Card,as I said,if you try different SD Card Brands,
you will maybe "notice" it at the first Tries.
(Please expect no "Wonders".:D)

So maybe do not spend "too much Money" for the SD Card except for the Brand.
Please note,an SD Card failure can unfortunately happen with any Brand today....

Thank you.:)

Actually it happened with a SD card from Aliexpress (where SD stands for Surely Death :D). I'll go for a Samsung, Sandisk or any other famous and more reliable brand, that very cheap SD card was just for a test which confirmed how quality can sometimes really make the difference.
The 64 Gb Uhs-3 I posted above will definitely do the job.

Thanks again for your precious thoughts on this!
