Can you download it from the retroarch website and use a PC file browser to just extract the files to your SD card?

That's what I did. I downloaded the box art and put them in the corresponding folders on the Wii U SD card.

It's a fiddle, I can't recall the slight folder changes and locations of the top of my head. But it's doable .

It seems like the website only provides core files and not the asset files. I wasn't having this problem a few days ago.
Yeah, I was hoping the one on the website might clear up any downloading issues you're having rather than getting the app from the homebrew browser or whatever it's called.

That's strange, I downloaded both Download (only core files) and Download (rpx) (only core files), I don't see any assets files which is what I need because Retroarch is preventing me from continuing unless I download the asset files which is what it is stating that is missing. Aside from that when I also click Installation instructions it only redirects me to the Download page. Am I missing something?

When I downloaded it I extracted everything to my SD card. When Retroarch booted up it worked fine but otherwise had no icons, everything just appeared garbled. So if it's not booting I don't know, sorry.

Yeah, the issue I am facing is
Warning: Missing assets use the online updater if available.

If the built-in assets downloader isn't working, you should be able to pull everything from here too. I believe you need to extract assets.zip into sd:/retroarch/media?

@QuarkTheAwesome Yeah, for some reason the built-in assets downloader isn't working after I successfully 'update core info files' I then move on to 'update assets' but it stops and disappears always after 61% and never finishes. I attempt to try again but it doesn't finish downloading. Thanks for linking me to here. I will try to extract assets.zip into sd:/retroarch/media and see if that solves the problem.

UPDATE: So I tried extracting assets.zip (which essentially is the assets folder) into sd:/retroarch/media but I am still receiving the error
'Warning: Missing assets use the online updater if available'.

Ok, so I'm assuming you have your wiiu/apps/retroarch directory since you have retroarch available to even launch, right? And a /retroarch directory on the root of your SD card? Try my /retroarch directory to get you started. I did delete the cores I won't personally be using, so you'll have to add those back from the official download if you want them. You'll also have my issue with the ozone driver that playlists are blank when you select them, but you can always just not use playlists or switch back to the xmb driver.

Note to mods: there are no roms in here. It's just the /retroarch directory from the official download with the assets downloaded from my personal SD card for him to try.

Hopefully this is the right link, I've never actually uploaded to mega before, just downloaded.

@n00bsaib0t I fixed my issue, for some reason the built-in assets downloader wasn't working for me.

UPDATE:
ISSUE FIXED

So I was extracting assets.zip (which is an 'assets' folder) and copying it into sd:/retroarch/media/instead of extracting the contents of the 'assets' folder into sd:/retroarch/media small misunderstanding, my fault sorry guys! I was able to use @QuarkTheAwesome's link here to download assets.zip and extract the contents of the extracted folder into sd:/retroarch/media which was successful....so there should be no “assets” folder in media. Thank-you again. I am booting completely now!

Thanks everyone!

So I just got Retroarch up and running on my Wii U and things look good, but I am having some issues with game speeds. NES games are running too fast and SNES is running slow. I have tried a few different cores on each (although not every single core yet) and I have tried updating the cores.

Any ideas?

What region are your roms? I remember years back I thought (E) was English but it's Europe, for example. So an emulator that forced NTSC 60hz would make the game seem it was running really fast because the music sped up, but it was actually normal speed. Emulators that didn't force NTSC 60hz were slow because the games were running at 50hz. This comes to mind specifically because an NES game like SMB sounded super fast while an SNES game like Mega Man X was painfully sluggish. So check that. If it helps, turn on the option to show FPS. If you're getting a steady 60 FPS you're at the right speed. If you're getting 50 FPS you probably have PAL roms.

Are the shaders and overlays broken? or am I missing something? I already extracted them sd://retroarch/shaders (slang) and sd://retroarch/overlays, when I load a game I navigate to the paths in order to load them from the quick menu, but it says "No Items"

Thanks.

The roms are a mix of regions. I think all the NES roms I tried are US.

For NES it does seem like it is just the music running fast, but the game is at normal speed. Is that possible? I just tested it by playing along with a youtube video and the timer clocks seemed to be going at the same speed, but the music is definitely faster on the Wii U. It is consistently showing 60 FPS.

As for SNES, it is running slow, and that is reflected in the frame rate. I tried maybe 8 or 9 roms and all but one ran at varying degrees of slowness. The only one that was locked in at a solid rate was a European rom that was running at 50 FPS and it felt like the right speed. All the others I tried (a mix of U and E) ran a little slow and fluctuated FPS.

I am mostly trying snes9x core. I tried snes9x 2010 on one rom and it ran even slower. Is it worth trying any other cores?

Any ideas?

A PAL ROM forced to run as NTSC will play at normal speed with the music too fast. I'm not sure exactly how it all works but at 50hz the music is the right speed but the gameplay isn't, so when you force it to 60hz the gameplay is now the right speed with the music going faster than normal as the whole game is sped up. If you're used to 60hz you won't notice the gameplay being faster because it's the speed you know already, but the music will be.

As for why your SNES stuff is doing that, it might help to know which games? I mostly do Mario ROM hacks, which hit their 60 FPS no issue. I personally use Virtual Console where I can, and I'm in that fortunate camp that has most of the games they care about available officially. But if you let me know which games are giving you issues I can test them out to see if I'm having issues as well.

Well the PAL/NTSC for the speed up music on NES might make sense, but these are labeled USA roms. However, I have noticed a couple mistakes in the labeling, so maybe they are not accurate.

It looks like I have found a solution for SNES. The Snes9x 2005 plus core seems to be working well for me. Every rom I tried on any other core ran slowly, but so far, everything seems to be working well on this core, besides Star Fox.

Edit - Ok, I tried some different roms for NES and that seems to have fixed the music speed issue. I also tried a different core, but my guess is that the problem was with the roms.

As for SNES, I now know what the problem was - I had the rewind feature turned on. I turned it off and the games seem to run fine on all cores now.

But that brings me to my next question. I can't figure out how to map a rewind button. I don't see it as an option in the controls menu. Am I missing something? Is it only available on certain cores?

So it looks like android is able to play Killer Instinct 1 & 2 on Mame 2003 core without any visible issues.

What are we missing on the WiiU side of things in order to do this?
