My 5.05 Ps4 is having difficulties currently so I cannot test it myself. The current issue is that if you try to play with this particular difficulty hack on original hardware (Ps2 or Ps3 makes no difference) the game freezes in battle upon becoming the enemy's turn. The game is 99% functional besides that and it is a huge shame, the only way it is playable is by using a ps2 emulator and that is not an option for a lot of people. My hope is that the PS4's ps2 emulator will play the game properly.

To help, I have posted the links to the .Xdelta patch of the most recent update and my .ps2 memory card with five saves from my vanilla play through at various points in the game. Oddly enough, I was the first to discover that the final boss battle is the only instance where the game will not freeze during the enemy's turn. I immediately reported my finding to Zombero about three weeks ago and, while he expressed gratitude and confirmed receipt it has not led to an updated patch yet, but I remain hopeful he will come through someday. Hopefully one of you can confirm if the hack works on Ps4 so us SMT fans with crappy PCs can rejoice sooner rather than later.

-snip-

Thank you in advance for anyone who can confirm the compatibility of this game.

Regards snip

Its compatible and have a config file!!! ..Do you try to repack the ISO/pkg of the game with the config file?

I know the un-patched game is compatible and is reassuring that the patched version could also work. To answer your question, when using the program that converts ps2 isos to ps2 classics for ps4 you are given the option to add a config file into resulting .pkg file.

Now in-case the patched version does not work, I had the idea of inputing various other confirmed commands for the PS4's ps2 emulator into the config file with the hopes that one of them will prevent the game from crashing during battle.

So you are telling me that someone has created a "ROM" hack that doesn't work on real HW but only on a (specific revision) of an emulator (PCSX2 I suppose)?

It's never going to run on a PS4 then...

The messed up thing is, the hack does absolutely nothing to the graphics or anything else that would be game breaking. Even new skills he added work just fine. The patch was never intended to be exclusive to the emulator, hence why Zombero put in a lot of effort to bug fix issues for console users 1+ year ago. The only issue remaining is the crash upon enemy turns.

Incorrect. PS3's compatibility is better than PS4's version. I know because Klonoa 2 was playable in PS3 but level bug according to compatibility's explanation and I can't finished it due to level bug at the end of the game but not in PS4 because of GFX issues in the beginning level in PS4.

I tried the romhack on ps4 and it just crashed. Played it on PC.
Damn, it didn't even get through the intro? Were you using a config file by any chance or not? I know on ps3 there was a config file you would pair with it to work as it would crash if you tried to leave the area after the first boss battle.

From what I think it's the project description:
Introducing Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - Hardtype! This is a hack of the original game designed with several primary goals in mind:

  • 1) Rebalance many aspects of the original game.
  • 2) Create a gameplay experience that is challenging to veterans of the SMT series.
  • 3) Add in some fresh new enemies and skills to revitalize the gameplay experience.

To achieve the above he definitely patched the code...

Just a blackscreen no logo. It's definitely fixable, maybe with checksum, but I didn't put much work into it.

If you're feeling up to it, I took the default config file and added a few of the emulator commands confirmed to work for all ps2 classics with the hope it would improve compatibility. I have also included a separate list with all the confirmed commands with universal applicability to try out, hopefully it will be of use to you or anyone else whether it be for this game or any other people are struggling to load.

I may have mentioned it earlier, I was able to use new skills Zombero added without any issues at all (during the final boss battle which seems to be the only one not to crash the game during enemy turn). Other new functionality, such as being able to swap demons out using only half a turn instead of full also worked. The one constant is that on the enemy's turn, regardless of whether or not the skill they used is new or original, the game crashes either (1) when the "Enemy turn" text comes up, (2) After the enemy turn text vanishes and the camera zooms in on the enemy about to make their first move OR (3) after they use their first move (either immediately after the animation finishes or right after it passes to the next enemy).

I wont deny the possibility that the patch may very well be unplayable except on Pcsx2 but I can attest that simply because a ps2 game has been patched does not mean it is fundamentally incompatible with original hardware (See Full Moonlight Patch for Persona 3 from here). Granted, not all patches will work, such as the free camera patch from that same link, but my point still stands, that depending on what was patched the game could still be playable on original hardware, now of course this difficulty patch is far more complex than the cutscene/bgm patch linked but I still don't see anything that the patch changes that would undoubtedly make it unplayable on original hardware *such as graphical upgrades the ps2 was never meant to handle*.

Sure, but my objection was directed to "...the hack does absolutely nothing to the graphics or anything else that would be game breaking." as it's way too easy to introduce new bugs and in this case we are talking about patching executables, I can assure you the complexity is way higher than normal software development.

Here is the thing though, the guy who did that test played the Japanese version (Maniax) with English Patch, which means his notes were invalid for the NTSC version. Having said that, I have actually seen an FPKG made available for SMT Nocturne (Un-patched mind you) on some forum I cannot remember the name of (yes I know it is also against the rules to say names of such places, I literally cannot remember though, lol). Anyways, Someone should really move his report to the Japanese column and perhaps edit to clarify a translation patch was used, making results inconclusive.

I am certain that even if the NTSC version does play fine on it's own there are bound to be some wierd compatibility issues, sadly it's counterpart SMT: Digital Devil Saga I & II which both utilize the same engine are not even playable as it is (or maybe it was voices do not play properly). One thing that should help is the code for disabling delay of L2H effects which all three games and maybe a handful of others utilized heavily which appears to be the source for a lot of their incompatibility issues typically seen.

If you are interested in taking a crack at this, you can download the config file I made using the default settings+L2H Delay disabled and some other commands confirmed to work universally for the Ps2 emu on Ps4 that might help prevent crashing among other issues. I have also included a list of additional universal commands that might be of some help, it can't hurt to try them out, granted ideally we would want to limit it to whichever are actually needed so we don't hit a limit (if one exists) and so that we know what the actual cause is/just less sloppy that way overall too.

Either way thank you for letting me know that ps2 isos turned .pkg can be patched without there necessarily being any issues.

@LonelyPhantom I've patched the usa version of SMT:N with the xdelta file. I also widescreen patched it. I got the game to boot. Played both normal & hard difficulty in the medical centre. Battled the early enemies where you follow that wheelchair dude. There is no freezing or crashes. Have not tested any further.

I've tested using rogue galaxy & kof emu template. I recommend using kof emu to fix a lot of the visual graphics.

I have not tested your game saves because getting them to work on ps4 using elf loader is time consuming & fiddely. Too much trial & error from my experience.

Forgot to mention that I noticed ppl reporting different places the game freezes. So although it has not crashed for me I have not tested the game far enough to fully confirm its playable. At least patched isos work on ps4.

You're the best! Did you use my config file or any config file at all? This is a really big deal that us console users (well those of us with hacked PS4s) have a way to finally play this hack. I need to fix my PS4 ASAP (I seem to have undone the profile activation thing because I foolishly booted into Staff Mode because I thought it would fix the error code I had when I tried doing my own test of the game).

Thanks again for your help, I am really eager to try it out when I have the chance. I will keep your advice in mind and be on the look out for any other crashes, but hopefully they wont come up or at least could be fixed via config files.

I did not use any special configs although using commands or advance lua file might fix the overall graphics & popping. We now know the game is playable with minor issues. There is a random bug where the screen will go white in the hospital. This is a game bug not emulation related.
