I have one of the newer Wii models (RVL-101) that doesn’t have GameCube ports, and I’ve been successfully using it with GameCube controllers in Nintendont via WiiFlow by using my Wii U USB GameCube controller adapter.

I realized today that my GameCube controllers aren’t working in games like Mario Kart Wii and more importantly, they’re not working in WiiFlow which means that I have to grab a Wiimote just to launch a GameCube game from WiiFlow.

I’m automatically launching WiiFlow Lite 5.2.0 when my Wii boots via Priiloader. My hope is to be able to immediately use my GameCube Controllers in WiiFlow to select GameCube games (without a Wiimote) and to also launch and use Wii games that support GameCube controllers like Mario Kart Wii.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my GameCube controller working in all scenarios as I described above?

Also, before anyone says that I should just get an original Wii model (RVL-001)... I originally preferred the newer RVL-101 model because (1) I already owned it, and (2) I’ve heard that the newer Wii models have cleaner video output (which I care about since I’m connected to my 480p CRT with component video cables).

Do GameCube controllers work as I'm expecting though if I were to use an RVL-001 (original GameCube compatible Wii)?

Will the GameCube controller work on the WiiFlow menus though too?
GC controller in WiiFlow menu works for me on RVL-001.

The RVL-101 is indeed fully capable of supporting GC controllers and memory cards – if you solder in the missing parts. Probably not the answer you wanted, but still: [YouTube]

About the picture quality RVL-001 vs. RVL-101: I do not know. But Wii consoles are so cheap at the moment. You won't risk much if you give it a try by getting the older model.

They've already answered you perfectly about adding proper GC ports, so that leaves
I’ve heard that the newer Wii models have cleaner video output
They can be equally as good - the issue comes from the official SDK libraries (and, until very recently, homebrew ones too - since they had to start by reverse engineering the official ones) configuring the DAC incorrectly; while the official fix was changing the DAC to perform differently under the known wrong settings, it's also certainly possible to have software do the right thing in the first place - some homebrews are being updated, and commercial games are slowly getting unofficial patches (in the form of cheats) :)

Actually, yes! There have been some methods devised that allow compatibility with the GameCube Adapter for certain Wii games. Here are some of the methods.

CTGP-R: A massive expansion/service to Mario Kart Wii that adds 216 Custom Tracks. The channel should come with GameCube Adapter compatibility built right into the channel itself. And you can even boot vanilla Mario Kart Wii with the Adapter compatibility still in place which is neat. You can download that here.

Smash Bros. Brawl Gecko Patch: Someone managed to write a Gecko patch to have Brawl interface with the Adapter. You can download it here. It may also work with Brawl mods as well, although there may be compatibility issues with some. As far as I know, Project M works pretty well with it. Don't know about Legacy XP though...

There's also another method that uses an application called BrainSlug. An application developed by one of the authors behind CTGP-R. This one has a more universal approach and tries to work with most games that are compatible with GameCube Controllers. I'm currently unaware of any compatibility issues of this software, but considering none is listed, you might have some luck with it.

Download for that can also be seen here.

I ended up deciding to get an RVL-001 and I’m going to mod it with a WiiDual so I can connect it with RGBS SCART to my CRT monitor.

Thanks everyone for the help! Learned a ton!

Just to be clear: Newer Wii models do NOT have "cleaner" video output. The hardware is exactly the same. Nintendo implemented a fix that improved 480p component output on newer Wiis in around 2010. But recently a simple "480p fix" was released here (and elsewhere) that gives the original Wii's the exactly same fix. It's shameful Nintendo didn't release it as a system software update since it clearly can be implemented easily in software (it was a bug in their original SDK).

I'd post a link to the 480p fix here, but as a new user, I can't.

Someone please link me the 480p fix that s/he has mentioned?

You can read about it here:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-480p-video-bug-discovered.536599/

The "fix" is not a thing you run once and you're done. You need to use homebrew apps compiled with it. Some people did it for USB Loader GX:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx-480p-fix.536672/
(Before doing anything please red the thread thoroughly).

Other apps also got updated for it, but I have not been following it much, as my Wii is a late 2010 model and it has the fix included. A modified version of Nintendont is the link above too.
