Square Enix has trademarked Collection of Mana in Europe

sdfsdfsdsdfsdf.png

If a recent trademark is to be believed, Square Enix appears to be bringing the Seiken Densetsu Collection to the west. Released back in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch in Japan, the Seiken Densetsu Collection is a compilation of three titles from the Mana series, as it is known in English territories: Final Fantasy Adventure, Secret of Mana, and the never-localized Seiken Densetsu 3. On May 31st, Square Enix registered a trademark in Europe for a video game under the name of Collection of Mana, which hints at the games possibly making their way westward. If this is true, then we'll likely see an announcement at Square's E3 press conference.

But I never got around to Secret of Mana - I first tried playing it on PC on a SNES emulator and that didn't feel right, but now I have a Raspberry Pi with RetroPie and one of those 8Bitdo wireless SNES pads and I keep meaning to play it with that but haven't got around to it. And then the remake came out and now I'm not sure whether I should play that or just stick to the original (or both). If this collection makes it to the Switch, it will be a big decision made for me!
I'd say go for the HD remake. Though initial impression of it wasn't well received, I think it helps that it's a improved way to experience the game in modern times. If you want my opinion of the snes game, you can read my review. I admit it's not a easy game, or is nothing like the gameboy version, but it did set a example of "Action RPG" that made it popular internationally compared to the Japan favored "Turnbased RPG" at the time final fantasy was popular. :)

Or a depth look of the creative process of the game.

Is it bad that I only played secret of mana and not the other two games mentioned here? :ninja:

How is the battle system in the third game? One of the things i found frustrating about it was the combat feeling too cheap.

The SD3 combat system feels pretty slow and dated now. However there exists a mod that improves the combat and the game balance by a big margin. If you're going to play the game I suggest you try out this mod: http://ngplus.net/index.php?/files/file/28-seiken-densetsu-3-sin-of-mana/

For example with the mod you can run and block during combat and all classes now have decent amount of spells and passive mp regen. Also the mod allows you to skip the spell cast animations that can get redundant if you have multiple casters in the party.

I want to import a copy of the game from Europe since is getting released in English there. Hence why I had asked.

How do we know that? We've seen these trademark renewal crap all the time and never once has anything good come of it. This confirms nothing regarding Secret of Mana 2 being translated.
Seiken Densetsu 3 will not be translated.

RPGs do get sold more in Europe than the USA. The reason why the SNES had a few RPGs released only in the US was because they either needed a special chip or the SNES was near the end of life due to Nintendo pushing the Nintendo 64 so hard. (And the SNES was doing worse in Europe than in the USA because the Sega Genesis was actually more popular in Europe).

Heck in some parts of Europe the Sega Saturn did quite well and even got Japanese RPGs translated to English there.

So actually I think the game will actually get translated and released in Europe. But due to the many languages it may take a while.

That doesn't confirm Square Enix is going to translate SD3, that's what I'm saying. Unless someone has a source, it's just another "X company renewing trademarks" BS situation, nothing will come of it. Until there's an official announcement, it means nothing.

It's better. But it gets monotonous having to recast buffs constantly. I've always thought the best feature of this series is the music.

The SD3 soundtrack is beautiful. The CD set for it is really nice looking with blue casing too. SD2 has less tracks and a simpler, more succinct sound which I probably prefer overall, but both are very experimental masterpieces by SFC standards. I wish Kikuta had released more material, especially before devolving into composing low quality Hentai game soundtracks.

I would buy this Collection for an official english translation of Seiken Densetsu 3 alone.
Released September 1995 in Japan, most where following the PSOne and Sega Saturn releases so this game didn´t get the attention it deserves.

The official blurb (read: excuse) at the time was the multitude of glitches and bugs present in the game (Secret of Mana has its fair share too of course): Japanese gamers are more tolerant of bugs, apparently... plus RPGs were still much more niche in the West in those pre-FFVII days. Couple that with of course the next gen systems releasing was why Square decided not to port.

...Leaving me, at college at that time, spending £90 importing SD3 anyway since I loved Secret of Mana so much ...but getting completely stuck partway through coz I didn't understand fucking Japanese.... (finding out about an english translation, thus finding out about roms in general, for this game is what started the whole emulation thing for me in the first place)

To those saying it won't be translated though: Final Fantasy V was never going to be at one point either. Ditto the SFC SaGa games. ;)
