I can do a bunch of stuff tomorrow if anyone has experience with linux now that it appears it's been unlocked, just leave some ideas to tryout here and hopefully I can get it off the static screen, if that is even possible, thanks again for the help and suggestions.

So a buddy just mentioned trying to make sure all the cords from the console were connected, I didnt have the ethernet cord plugged in every time I've tried previously. I dont know if I had just put the usb in a different spot this time, but when I turned it on, it went to the Ubuntu screen, checked the hard drive for errors, it's never done that before, then proceeded to log in. The console might be the usb key? The demos still dont work, but when I swap inputs on the TV from the console to the silver box, it now displays this screen and nothing else happens. I'll have to mess with this more tomorrow. Maybe there are other wires I've just missed buried in the back, there also a coaxial wire coming out the back of the console.

Note sda5_crypt - I'd put money on that drive being LUKS. It'll be interesting to see how that gets decrypted, considering the user never entered a key or anything.

Found a datasheet for that PC: http://cdn.viaembedded.com/eol_products/docs/amos-3002/datasheet/VIA_AMOS-3002_datasheet_v180518.pdf ( https://web.archive.org/web/2019052...datasheet/VIA_AMOS-3002_datasheet_v180518.pdf )
Looks like a bog-standard x86 rig - not very powerful, either. Wonder if that console is empty after all...
(edit: sorry yeah, that console is definitely doing something. I know other people with kiosk consoles too, and they aren't paperweights.)

There could be a disc in that console, if you can get to it I'd definitely try the eject button

No disc in console, I dont even think theres a disc drive as the eject button does nothing and the box is 100% tied to the console. When I unplug the USB from the silver box it goes back to the ubuntu screen asking for a usb key. The console is the key, someone on Nintendoage suggested the box was used to update the kiosk. I'm not sure how accurate that is, and I'm scared to plug it into the internet to test it lol. When I first boot the box my wired keyboard still lights up, when it hits the splash screen it no longer works. No idea if it's by design or my keyboard is incompatible.

So I took the front of the TV bezel off and found this just hanging out...

So it wasn't the console unlocking the box, it was the actual key. Is this safe to put in my comp?

That's probably where it's pulling the keys from for LUKS/FDE - you'll have to get the keys off at some point to decrypt that hard drive, though I'm not sure if plugging it into a regular PC is a good idea. Would be nice to find some more info on that first!

Looks like it's one of LaCiE's USB keys. While I can't find that exact one, the petitekey and iamakey look pretty similar - so it's almost certainly a normal USB drive. I'd also put a roughly 99% chance of it either being formatted for Linux or encrypted using the private/public software the manuals keep talking about. I'll have to defer to the Windows nerds on how you can image an entire drive (not just one partition) in a way that's not gonna modify the drive itself, but with any luck it'll have the keys to decrypt the PC's hard drive on it.

Well, the box seems standalone now. With the usb key plugged directly into the box, it unlocks and stays on the Wii U splash screen. There doesn't seem to be any link cable between the box and the console other than maybe the ethernet cable, but then how does the box connect to the internet if the ethenet cable was linked to the console. It would still be nice if there was a random Nintendo rep from 2012/2013 lurking around here that has used this lol.

Update: Got folder view working, there's about 100gb worth of stuff. Found interesting folders.

A lot of stuff for the host and a decent chunk of Wii U stuff.

The demos folder has some known title ID numbers but the format (WUMOD) is definitely not documented anywhere from a quick look around. What's even stranger is if these are just demos running on stock Wii U board, the WUMOD files likely are containers and not executable code. It definitely looks more like the dev side than a retail kiosk deal. The USB stack is interesting as it would suggest one of two things -

Wii U is using parts of lin to handle it's USB filesystem (I doubt this)
This kit is able to use ext filesystems natively likely due to the kiosk firmware reading more than just WUP packages.

This is how to back it all up to a USB storage device.
I would recommend that you follow the steps here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem/TAR#Backing_Up
replace "backup.tar.gz" with "/media/your_storage_drive/backup.tar.gz"

You can also use dd. Use "df -h" to check which hard disk, then you can do "sudo dd if=<path to INPUT hard disk> of=/media/your_storage_drive/backup.dd bs=16384"

Working example if /dev/sda is the hard disk you want to backup to USB storage device:
"sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/your_storage_drive/backup.dd bs=16384"

You may need the password of the "multigame" account. If you entered the password correctly, wait for "multigame@SESWURCC00280:~@" to come back up before you eject the storage device using the file manager. I promise you, it will take a while, so do something else useful while the dd operation is occurring.

An example of "df -h":
Code:
uyjulian@julian-aaa:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev 1.8G 0 1.8G 0% /dev
tmpfs 367M 38M 329M 11% /run
/dev/sda2 225G 29G 185G 14% /
tmpfs 1.8G 20K 1.8G 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 5.0M 8.0K 5.0M 1% /run/lock
tmpfs 1.8G 0 1.8G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
tmpfs 367M 4.0K 367M 1% /run/user/111
tmpfs 367M 0 367M 0% /run/user/1000
In this case, /dev/sda2 is my boot drive. /dev/sda2 is referring to the second partition of /dev/sda

I know others have suggested it as well but I want to pile on: I would recommend purchasing or borrowing a SATA to USB adapter to backup that SATA hard drive to another computer. There are of course different software options for different computer platforms, some already mentioned. Once you've cloned the drive or at least made a backup, then you won't be stressing when playing around in the interface. You can then plug your cloned drive back into the kiosk computer to see if your clone worked. An exact clone will preserve the drive encryption, and should still work. At least then you can put it back to the way it was before you started poking around the filesystem.

It sounds like the Wii U contains the key. Does the console need to be on before you boot into the computer?

It's a long shot but if you live near me I have all the equipment you can borrow, and probably a spare hard drive laying around here you can have. I can also host the disk image if you're able to get to that point.

I have a fair amount of expertise with Linux/Mac/PC. If you need help running commands, etc, let me know.

Also, I don't know much about the Wii U System NAND side of things, but it would be cool to dump that too. That's a whole different beast though since you're dealing with an unknown demo unit.

I'm currently copying everything but the demos over that isn't locked by permissions. That includes scripts, client updates and firmware along with a bunch of other random stuff that may or may not be useful. It just all fit on a 32gb usb stick. The demos are 44gb so are too large, that will have to be copied in 2 parts on 2 other sticks. The key was attached inside the kiosk behind the port for the controllers so I'm assuming if someone stole the drive they couldnt take the key to unlock it. I'll put everything back together on my computer and see about how to upload everything in one shot.

Ok, I've pretty much copied all I can without the admin profile. Man, most of these files are over my head. What would be a good incognito place to upload, I'm not sure of the legality of upping this, and what is the best format. Zip files or as the folders are now. This is where I'm at on my windows PC. How would I go about trying to single boot? The SES folder is the one with all the large demo/client files.

You can use 7-zip to compress files. Good places to upload are 1fichier.com, mega.nz, and drive.google.com

Don't post the link here, but feel free to post it on that other website

It came with a silent video I'm guessing for when it was on in stores so it didn't drive workers crazy hearing the same thing all day, my demo console has the same thing. I posted some links on assembler if anyone wanted to take a look at some stuff to let me know if they think it's worth saving.

I extracted some (not all) demos from there, and this is what I found:

- Super Mario 3D World
- Monster Hunter
- Need For Speed
- Nintendo Land
- Wii Fit U
- Wii Party U
- Zelda The Wind Waker HD

I'll keep you informed if I extract more games

Were they playable demos, or videos? Were the demos complete or segmented because only 5gb or so data was there?
