is it possible for an sd card to over heat due to cfw and playing games from sd and burn the card and make it unusable and you lose everything

Yes but by the time that happens it'll burn the plastic casing and plastics in the reader; it can also be that so many R/W cycles have killed it, btw exFat on switch corrupts so try using GUI Format on it.

not likely. flash media have definite r/w cycles and if you fill the capacity to it's limits they tend to last a lot less. I always try to keep around 20% of the capacity free. I've had many sd cards go bad at 90%+ full. However I don't loose anything on them they just stop writing. Can't delete anything either. Even a format won't remove the data.
