GameStop will be raising its Pro membership costs and phasing out its 10% off used games discount

There was once a time where GameStop was the place to get the latest games, when pre-orders were encouraged, and trading in your completed games was common. These days, GameStop has been struggling, attempting to adapt to a changing market too slowly, and drastically bleeding money each year because of it. Talks of buyouts from other companies and potential bankruptcy and debt have floated around amidst declining stocks and sales for the past two years. These factors have likely resulted in a new change being made to stores across the United States.

Consumers that have shopped at GameStop in the past will likely be aware of their Power Up Rewards Pro program, which lets consumers pay $14.99 a year in order to receive higher trade-in value for their games, a subscription to a gaming magazine, and other minor perks. The most beloved part of their modern Power Up Rewards Pro service is the ability to take an extra 10% off any and all used games, but soon, that won't be around anymore. GameStop is making changes to the subscription, which will see a slight price increase from $14.99 to $19.99, and the phasing out of the 10% discount in favor of a new $5 monthly certificate. This coupon will be usable once a month, and will be applicable to more than just used products, though it's far more situational and isn't a constant perk, like how the 10% off coupon was. GameStop's new changes will roll out soon to various stores in order to test the waters, with all stores expected to make the change.

Time will tell how this change will affect GameStop's dwindling consumer base, for the better or the worse. Things are looking bleak, and it might not be long before GameStop joins Toys 'R Us in bankruptcy.

Gamestop had a good run. Selling used games at close to new prices and making a profit when the game makers only profit off of the initial sale. Brilliant, I say. Brilliant!

If the makers cared for making profits on further sales they would have offered the service themselves or invested in a service that did it.

Hiking used game price. Booty trade in value. Now even 10% discount to trick the paid member to renew is butchered.

GameStop is only good for collection purpose: exclusive, limited edition.

Wouldn't miss if GameStop going out of business.

Never had a subscription at GameStop but even if I had one, this raise in the subscription fee doesn't faze me at all. It just five more dollars at it dammi. why does everyone have to be so cheap.
The issue is not $5. The underlying point is the raise while cutting features on already overpriced used games. 10% discount of these overpriced games adding up over time!

You guys say this ain't good but well I wish there was something like that gamestop here... Because here there barely is a used market and you pay almost the full price of a new game for a used one so, all digital, I never buy a physical game for many time. Though I bought Zelda for the Switch but I ended up selling it to a friend a few months ago for like 35€ and only have used the card for like 20 hours, not a single scratch, but on a used store they would probably only give like 20€ or less and then maybe sell it for like 50€ LOL... And there are no rewards...
GameStop is your used store (booty trade in value) + reward program:. While used store sounds worse than GameStop, you have to understand it encouraging trading between gamer = more fair value. The way GameStop is, it tricks some people into selling their gaming stuff to them for reward promise! In return it hikes the shite out of everything. If you don't have plan to spend so much time on a game, wait a bit for sale in other retailers. Same game, New is like 30% cheaper than GameStop used game of newer title (mostly close to new retail price).

GameStop customer service when it comes to new stuff stinks. You would go to hell if you ever get a defective new gaming stuffs. Clerks and managers are trained to spin the blame on customer refuse exchange/ return, to force a trade in of mint console!!!

A weirdly enough, there is GameStop fanboyism even how little going on in gaming community. As I pointed out, it discouraging trading = everyone lose. Jerks would go out to make offer based on GameStop trade in value when you try to look for a fair trade.

Their used game prices with the discount were actually pretty decent. If I can get a game I really want close to release day at $40, I'll usually bite. Sounds like there won't be anywhere that's possible for physical games now.
Their 10% discount for used game is not as good as 20% pre order from Amazon especially now that Amazon Pick Up is rolling out in major metros. Over the years you can stack up gift card discount for Amazon to add more saving to bring the price down.

Yowch.. that sucks, Pro was always worth it, even though I never bothered subscribing. It's sad, Gamestop is soooo much cheaper than pretty much everywhere. No surprise the model is finally failing...

I don't really use Gamestop anymore now that I'm mainly a PC Gamer I have a switch but I buy the games digitally. The Switch will likely be my last console Sony and MS are going to streaming in the future likely with Microsoft and their Xbox Scarlett Games possibly being able to run natively on Windows 10 PCs in the future considering Microsoft's bid to unify Windows and Xbox completely and just have Xbox be a brand not a console wouldn't surprise me. These are just reasons why I don't bother with Gamestop anymore.

With Streaming and all digital likely being the future for most people GameStop must be really scared
