I have around 200 or so games on DVD+R DL, and... maybe a few dozen retail discs too. I have a VAD 6038 which was pot tweaked three times in 2014, none were done with monitoring - just very fine adjustment, and the third one has worked since then... until last month I suppose, so.

The thing is, I read way back you wanted to spend on Verbatim discs and they're better etc. but now anything I have on Memorex, TDK, all still read - all retail discs too, it's just every Verbatim disc, ones from 2010 and the last one I have from late 2015 will attempt a seek once, then stop reading.

Popped one into my computer and I could get it to rip though I didn't let it finish, and I could get all the files on the disc up - so I know it isn't a case of scratched up Discs as some of the lesser discs with some similar damage can still be read out on my 360, so it has to be...

The layer not getting picked up by the laser, of course. I figured this was it, and all of my cheap discs have a deep purple, the Verbatim discs are lighter. What I don't understand is wouldn't it be the other way around for the laser to pick up lighter bottom games than the "cheaper" ones? I had a disc read around March, and after that I noticed I had a disc not read - thought it was just rotted, but then I kept trying and it's only these ones.

Mind you, it isn't the end of the world kind of thing, I have a ton of these owned digital by now though a lot of them are simply uncommon games, a lot of Cave shooters I can't play now etc. and I use Live, so RGH won't be sufficient.

Is the laser simply dying by this point? (it's had thousands of hours of use by now) or would trying my luck with another tweak be worth the risk of killing the thing?

Gonna be either your dvd burners laser or your xbox's laser

I would lean towards it being your xbox's laser

Oh, it's definitely my 360's laser.

The drive I use on my PC hasn't even burned a 360 copy yet, it's a year old by now. All these copies were made on older machines.

I used to do like you and have hundreds of discs but then they'd just stop working for no reason. I've been much happier since I invested in hard drives for all consoles. Get an rgh.

Edit: didn't read your whole post, I see you're not interested in RGH. You can get dualboot where you can get both.

verbatim discs are recommended, but I don't know why other brand discs are working. I haven't had one of my 360 disc drives fail, but I have two jtags, so I don't use the drive drives much. I have seen instances where the magnet would get stuck at the top of the drive, 'causing the discs not to spin, but that should affect all discs. it might depend on how old the drive is. I got a new laser for my ps2 a couple years ago. the original played burns for about 12 years 'til it had trouble reading discs. now, ps2 games are lightning fast boot-wise, but my system still struggles with mega man x3.

Oh, I prefer digital myself.

But, I play discs on XBL, before I get told "you'll get banned" it's been 6 years since I flashed this console, and my account is good. Not convinced of a ban on a flashed console since nobody has since... 2011 maybe.

Laser replacement isn't happening - I'm too shit to actually manage that without breaking something. Getting a replacement drive and just flashing that with my DVD key isn't hard.

No I wasn't going to tell you you'll get banned. I used to have a flashed 360 myself and played online. I know that LT 3.0 is stealth so Microsoft can't detect that you have a modded console at all.

I don't really remember the details but I know there's a such thing as having both a flashed 360 and where you can switch it to an rgh and you can go back and forth without getting banned but you'd have to find someone capable of doing that mod for you.

Oh

I'm just used to that being an excuse to get a RGH or play offline by literally everybody... at least a few years ago.

I should of said.

I use it for XBL sign in, and boosting achievements. About every active online 360 game is BC on XBO and I can just do that.

I just hated that discs that I would keep in perfect shape would get a scratch on it from the system or something and stop working, or sometimes they'd look pristine and stop working. But I'm so far removed from caring about online that I forgot other people still play online lol.

might just sell it then if they're working on the xbo and you have one. I don't own one, so I know little about them. I do know that c4eva managed to decrypt a few of its discs, but I don't know what came of that.

Exactly why it's even hooked up - not every game is compatible and many straight up aren't going to be ever. I'm getting off topic though.

Any technical reason Verbatim discs want more from the laser?

My 360 seems to be hit and miss. Sometimes it will read Verbatim discs, other times it doesn't. My only guess is room temperature since if the diode was shot, it shouldn't be this inconsistent in picking up discs.
