Gaming I think Metroid Prime 4 might use the new 1224 MHz CPU clock

I know the new 1224 MHz profile isn't going to make a massive difference compared to the standard 1020 MHz CPU clock speed but every little bit helps when you're relatively CPU limited like the Switch is, and I'm sure Nintendo wants Metroid Prime 4 to really be a showcase for the system's capabilities. They probably would like to make other first party games like BotW and Mario Odyssey work at 1224 MHz too but that would be too much work, those games were designed for 1020. Metroid Prime 4 is early enough in development that they can design it for 1224 MHz.
Thoughts? Am I crazy/stupid/missing something?

A game does not need to be specifically "designed" for a higher clock rate. It's only a matter of enabling/disabling it. In fact they already pushed an update for Zelda which enables it during load screens. Theoretically they could run all games at a higher clock rate all the time right now, it would only drain the battery even faster.

EDIT: though what I could imagine would be that if Nintendo ever releases a Switch Pro model, it would come with a more efficient processor, which could run at a faster clock rate with the same/less battery drain. Then the current model would still be eable to run all of the new games in boost mode and the newer model could be advertised with the longer battery life.

If it even comes out for the switch, they fired the last crew that was working on it, scrapped the project and started over from scratch.

That's not really true though, they would need to make a surprising amount of changes and push out a patch for each game if they wanted any them to use 1224 MHz CPU clock, Richard from Digital Foundry even mentioned it in one of those chats they do.

This isn't true either. The fact that I run my switch in an overclocked state at all times and that every single game runs without issue, seems to suggest no patches are needed. If the game can benefit from clock boosts, it just will. Whether that be steadying out performance or helping out with dynamic resolutions it just works.

I think if I remember rightly it was one game in the entire ps4 collection that didn't play nicely when boost mode was enabled. I'd expect the same scenario here.

In fact they already pushed an update for Zelda which enables it during load screens.
They've pushed an update for Super Mario Odyssey which also enables it during load screens (although it's not much of a difference because Odyssey didn't have very long load times anyways).
I hope the rumored Switch Pro will have bigger battery and computation power. A 1080p tablet screen would be nice too.

I'm no expert at all, only repeating what I've heard/read from others. The guys at Digital Foundry have brought it up a few times when talking about the Switch, that CPU clocks must stay the same because of game logic and game simulation. (Apparently this is important enough that the Switch runs at the same CPU clockspeed whether it's docked or undocked even though 1020MHz is not the ideal speed for either of those modes, but they had to choose a middle ground).
Richard also said he can't see them increasing the CPU clock in a Switch revision because of the amount of work that would require.
They can go crazy with GPU clock bumps though.

They were patched for those specific instances. BotW being a prime example. Bumping up the speed during loading. The only patches that should be needed are to tell the game when to bump the clock speeds up. It's up to the software to determine what frequencies the CPU and GPU are running.

My dude, why would you make this thread? Will they use the higher clock speeds? Maybe, probably yeah, but you made a thread with no proof or anything even remotely pointing to that conclusion other than a hunch.

The 1224mhz profile isnt "new", it's existed since before the system released and is toggleable setting on SDEV consoles, also it sets the GPU to 691mhz in "docked" and 230mhz in "handheld". They won't use it

Did the battery drains much, much more than before? And how mich time did you use it on oc state?

Mines in an overclocked state permanently. 1.4ghz on the cpu, and 500 (can't remember the exact figure) on the gpu with 1600 on the memory.

This has caused me zero issues with anything. I play at all times in handheld mode.

Battery life doesn't take a huge hit to be fair. I get around 2.5 hours play time but I also have an external battery clipped to the back so I get about 7 hours out of an overnight charge in total.

Nice! Can you share some tutorial to do this OC?

sometimes, people just want to talk and connect with other people over something.

honestly, i don't see them pushing metroid 4 in the same way they would zelda or mario.
they've already shown what the system is capable off, so unless the team behind metroid 4 specifically aims for impressing, they're not going to use that.

i am sure they will likely add more of those loading overclocks though, especially after sony just bragging over the laod times in their new console.
