'Minecraft Earth', a mobile AR game, announced

minecraft earth.JPG
Yes it's from Microsoft, yes it's blocky and yes, it's pretty much Pokemon GO: Minecraft Edition w/o Pokemon! Announced today, Minecraft Earth is an AR mobile game allowing you to superimpose Minecraft blocks in the real world. Some of the game's features include:
  • Collect! Minecraft Earth features many of the mobs you know and love, along with a bunch of new ones we can’t wait to show you. Over time, you’ll get the chance to discover unique variants, and use them to populate your builds. Minecraft pigs parading around your local park? That’s about to become your reality.
  • Explore! Your real-life neighbourhood is about to take on a new dimension. Gather resources, take on challenges, and experience a whole new world to discover!
  • Collaborate! Build even better by teaming up with other Minecraft Earth players. You can craft amazing creations together. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
  • Survive! Sure, you’re good at fighting hostile mobs in Minecraft, but are you ready to battle Minecraft mobs in real life? Best of luck, because we’re going to put your survival skills to the test!

There is no release window for this title but a limited beta is planned for this summer and registrations are live on the official website.

AR is not consumer-ready. There's already a plugin to play Minecraft in VR, so Microsoft is simply trying to capitalize off the popularity of that.
Judging by Pokemon Go, I've got to agree... but let's see what it's like first: if it works, this like a great idea to me! Baggsy putting a giant cock in my own back garden before someone else does!

Actually looks like it might be fun. It sounds weird, but it kinda suits Minecraft. Minecraft was always about exploring.
Just worried that it'll end up a big grief fest.
Huh so is this a trial for what the hololens minecraft will be like. looks cool if they had a vr headset but otherwise its annoying to build if you have to hold up the phone yourself while doing it.
This is on a much bigger scale than Hololens and therefore cooler.

Looks awesome!

Gotta love how people say Minecraft has always been the same, yet Microsoft somehow ruined it as it used to be "a decent game", lulz.

Can't wait for this.

The adult in generic kids clothing, skateboarding, is so forced it's actually kind of amazing.

If they were trying to sell something though, they just made it look retarded.

Matter of compatibility. One of the major things to consider when doing mobile games is difference between specs/features on different phones - the more phones can run your game, the bigger your audience is. Minecraft Earth sounds like something easily implemented via G-sensor, camera and accelerometer - the whole hololens/NFC thingie, on the other hand, sounds like something implausible for anything relatively old and/or not high-end.

I'm not saying to make it a hololens/nfc thingie (both are not the same thing so idk why you grouped it like that) I'm saying base a game OFF THE IDEA of the hololens graphics demo. The NFC thing (amiibos/skylanders) is just an example of missed marketing tactic, it's the equivalent of mario maker having majority of tools locked when you start.

Also, most flagships phones now have NFC and again, i'm not saying make it completely NFC, if the phone doesn't have NFC that should not subtract from the overall gameplay experience. It's a marketing idea and perhaps this was a missed opportunity to perhaps have this as a feature in minecraft earth, collect mobs, blocks, items in the irl world and then have the option to build your own biomes with the stuff you collected. The NFC serves as a purpose to skip that step and just scan it in and build, that would be good marketing for a kid wanting a new toy and video game.

Heck, the 3ds had the power todo this with QR cards and that's one of the routes they could have went to reduce power/processing power if that's the overall concern with my idea. They can be printed out so you can expand on demand how many biomes you want.

I'm not on the creative/development board of this game so obviously these are just my ideas for what I thought Microsoft was going to steer minecraft based off the picture/tech demo however, this is the same company thats known to flip flop ideas constantly.

I'm overall just disappointed at the final product, however that is just my opinion.

Just because they put a 25~ year old in this trailer, everyone 25+ can enjoy this game! Yes! I love it when they put adults in commercials for products that are mostly popular for kids. This made it possible for me to buy a switch, because I never would have unless there was a grown up in there convincing me that it is okay. Nope.

I dunno - it kinda makes sense of surface, but I do believe adding NFC into the mix would take away from portability - I do believe that general audience of mobile games doesn't want to print or scan things, they just want to aim their camera at something and do stuff. Ideas above are fun, but are kinda clumsy for a mass-market short-span AR game.

Also, while most flagship phones now how NFC, most phones, well, don't. Only a relatively small margin of people actually use modern flagship phones - a lot of people either stick to their old ones from early-to-mid 2010s or are just fine with non-gimmicky budget market.

Frick I posted twice with... the same post number?
How do I delete a post?

(It posted three times, this is the third, and I'm editing it rather than adding another post)

As a (former) rural Pokemon GO player, I'm on board as long as I can play around my house and not have to drive 15 minutes to actually play the game. I'm not begging for a pokestop near my house, but it's been four years, I just want to catch some friggin' Weedles in my yard.
