Microsoft and Sony will be partnering up in order to advance cloud-based services

Not since the first appearance of a Sonic game on a Nintendo console have we seen such a shocking partnership, as Microsoft and Sony have announced that they'll be working together in order to make advancements in cloud gaming. The two rivals will put aside their differences, at least when it comes specifically to Microsoft Azure and cloud-powered services. As referred to in the press release, Sony will be assisting the development of Microsoft's cloud technology in exchange for being able to apply it, likely to their PlayStation Now and PlayStation Vue services.

Under the memorandum of understanding signed by the parties, the two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services. In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services. By working together, the companies aim to deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences for their worldwide customers. These efforts will also include building better development platforms for the content creator community.

This partnership is especially curious, as it comes somewhat after the reveal of the all-streaming Google Stadia, and in the midst of both companies gearing up for the switch into the next gaming generation.

Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology, and the collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. “Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.

Considering that Azure is a behemoth on itself, and is a rock stable, proven solution, Sony decided not to burn money reinventig the wheel.

They'll leverage Azure for their services, while sharing implementations and know-how, more likely.

It's not a new world, seemingly adversaries joining forces.

Like, isn't Netflix using Amazon's cloud services to host their content? It's basically the same here.

Ah, the one thing both Microsoft and Sony agree on: giving customers less ownership over their games.

Well that and it's the writing on the wall. Whether we like it or not, cloud gaming is about to be a viable thing, with its share of benefits and setbacks. Owning our games isn't about to disappear either, this will just stand as another means for people to play games.

This "war" terminology only blinds consumers. They are competitors but no one hates the other. They are companies and will do whatever to acquire more revenue. That's all.
It's no secret that sony openly hates nintendo. The entire reason that they entered the games industry was because Krazy Ken got jilted for their cd add on deal falling out from under them and blowing a gasket to vow he would "destroy Nintendo" as verified by several sony employees at the time. It came to blow up in his face when "599 us dollars" became the meme of the month and the Wii launched and couldn't keep stock in stores for the best part of two years.

They should have boosted their sales with steam. I think that would have gotten most people. And then affiliate Nintendo with old SCEA corporation to make new non-sony of America :)

I have to admit that I wish for this to fail. I'm personally 110% against cloud based gaming and despise that concept more than AIDS. So yeah, I hope for this deal to fail horribly because I want cloud gaming to fail.

It wont be the next big thing...there are so many problems with it

I was being facetious. Cloud gaming is bullshit, no thanks in part due to shitty internet infrastructures that are so inconsistent, and with net neutrality being slaughtered, you can bet ISPs are gonna cap bandwidth like no tomorrow. Thanks, ISPs.

Exactly my first thought.

Except that it will all be compatible with Stadia, they just don't want to make it obvious right now. In the future that the powers that be want no one owns anything (except them of course). And this does not end with digital media it extends to property ownership. If you think this is conspiracy think again. Individuals cannot privately own land in China but may obtain transferrable land-use rights for a number of years for a fee. Currently, the maximum term for urban land-use rights granted for residential purposes is seventy years. ... Both urban land-use rights and home ownership are subject to registration.Mar 1, 2015. This means you cannot own land and thus you cannot leave it to your children. Wake up Neo.

And the reason china has those restrictions in place is to enforce the credit system. They literally banned the book 1984 idk how much more orwellian it could get. Don't forget the private city where there transferring muslims and holding them on lockdown. "Re-educating" yeah re educating my ass...

This can only work if there is a technology and engineering that isn't revealed to the publicity yet.

Ive already made my own experience with a couple of game streaming services yet, any with LAN, WiFi and also mobile Network.
Both Devices (Server & Client) were equipped with Hardware En- & Decoding.
I was using Steam InHome Streaming (also with Steam Link hardware), NVIDIA Shield, Moonlight, PS4 RemotePlay, and PlayStation Now.

None service was able to satisfy my game experience as a physically copy would do.
But what they all had in common: They all have massive problems on graphical artifacts which reminds me of really bad movie Camrip. This isn't Bandwidth related, because I got 400Mbit/s WAN, and 1GBit/s LAN Network all per Ethernet. - This is because service providers throttle down their resources, to run more games on less hardware. - Makes sense economically.
Now Sonysoft and Google are announcing their own dedicated game streaming with big focus to attention on 60fps, UHD and HDR Gaming? - That is only possible when they got some game changing engineering. - I'm curious to see what happens.
