Earthworm Jim is getting a new game...as an exclusive on the Intellivision Amico

k6vB1by.png

Yet another franchise revival is on the way, as Earthworm Jim will be getting a brand new game, 25 years after the original release of the 90's classic. It's also a good reminder that the Intellivision Amico console is slated to release in October 2020, as this game will be launching as an exclusive to the platform. Bringing together the 10 members from the first game's development team, this will be the first time they'll have worked together on a project in over two decades.

A 20-minute livestream will occur on May 4th, where the team will explain a few more details about the game. Tommy Tallarico, composer for the series, current CEO of Intellivision, and the man behind the creation of the Amico, had this to say about the reveal of "Earthworm Jim 3"

We have been talking about this moment for many years, it’s a dream come true to finally get the entire team back together. We’re looking forward to sharing a small part of our reunion and initial design meeting with fans from around the world. Intellivision Amico is designed to bring friends and families together and we are excited for fans and those just being introduced to the series to get a first look as we kick-off the design of the game.

If Doug's not involved then it's not Earthworm Jim. They should just sell the rights already, they've been sitting on the IP and doing nothing with it for years. All of the good people have already left Interplay, all they have now is intellectual property and brand recognition.
Idk, let's hope they can pull a Vicarious Visions and do some real justice to Earthworm Jim.

Hoping the Amico doesn't flop. There hasn't been a lot of public news for a long time, but unlike the VCS the Amico is definitely more likely to hit it's release date. I trust Tommy.

They'll also likely show off the console at E3, if you guys want to see it in action.

It's EWJ 3, so I guess not. The 2D games were better anyway.
That sort of makes sense... but at the same time it doesn't. Earthworm Jim 3D's logo looks more like Earthworm Jim 3ᴰ to emphasize the fact that it's supposed to be the third installment in the series.
I understand why they'd want to ignore it or forget about it though; the game sucked.

yeah hooray for touch control earthworm Jim. The controller doesn't even have an analog stick or D-pad

I read about the Amico right now and my thought it will bomb fiancially for 2 main reasons
1) E/E10 Games only allowed on the console
2)$ 4 to $7 games
a pro of it though..... no ports allowed

heres a yt vid

Heck, any console that focuses solely on 2D graphics in 2019 is pretty much dead in the water.
I don't know. I think if you would make such a console and had a constant flow of really good 2D games including platformers, action-adventures, old-school JRPGs, really good puzzle games and all that with a (bi-)monthly release schedule and fair prices, I think you really could establish such a console. Not in the AAA marked of course, but high enough. The thing is I don't see any company mad enough to actually have like 12 different game dev teams working 1.5-2 years on every title at the same time to keep the high quality 2D games flow comming. Not to mention that I have doubs you easily can assemble 12 full teams who are as talented as the people that worked at the really great 2D games in the 90s. You of course also needed a really good curated indie games store on such a console.
Yeah, I think such a console could work and even be succesfull enough to justify a succesor, but I don't see any studio stupid enough to take that risk.

The PC MS-DOS version is basically the Sega CD version, just with lots of loading.

Still I am quite fond of the Sega Genesis version.

Er, there's a Windows version too, in case you forgot. It has a superior color palette and redbook audio, but *shrug* this is not the DOS version
I was referring to.

But it's extremely tedious getting it to run on modern OSes given how it was ported

The DOS version does have awesome soundtrack, decent graphics and works on Dosbox.

Sure the Win95 version does look better but that's it.

Unfortunately, the team who ported it had issues with the level Intestinal Distress, but other than that, it's a decent port.

Windows 95 version also has cleaner sound effects, they aren't affected by the Mega Drive's PSG. But the DOS version is cheap on GOG.

the Sega CD and the Win95 version tend to be considered the best versions. Maybe I will try to use WINE for the Windows 95 version.

Anyone knows what's the best version of the second game?

Edit: PS1 apparently. Oh well that means it will be easier that WINE about it.

No doubt it's the games that sell a console in the end, but sticking to 2D severely limits the kinds of games you can create. Racing games would be difficult to pull off on such a system, and genres like the FPS are out of the picture entirely.

Maybe if the system could get some indie ports, but even then, many 2D indies are built using Unity, which is a 3D engine first and foremost, with 2D support being something that came afterwards.

Yeah... much as I would indeed want a new Earthworm Jim, I'm not buying an Amico for the privilege. There has to be a minimum amount of games to warrant buying a new piece of hardware, and yeah... nothing else of the Intellivision era even warrants my attention or desire.

Ehh... seeing how Microsoft is weirdly quiet, Sony's going full braindead censorship Microsoft and Sony joining their powers to go full retard and beyond and Intellivision lately slamming fake game journalists and outright calls them out for not being actual gamers i guess they have shade of chance to get small but loyabl buyer base and start something. There's actual place on the market right now and there's group of people that actual gamers does not like and Intellivision and Earthworm Jim's creators just standed against them boldly.

I'll have my eye on them, it will be hard to fight against the estabilishment but i'm moved and happy seeing them doing so.

Even people who want an Amico have pointed out the controller sucks. Now how many buttons did you need on the Sega Genesis Earthworm Jim game? More than the Amico has, if this game will be forced to have simplified gameplay because of that it will suck.

Wow, didn't expect to see people being so negative about the Amico. It's justified, given our experience with the Atari VCS and the Coleco Chameleon. I have a little more faith in this, personally. There's a really competent team involved behind the scenes, a clear vision of the console and it's features (besides its cosmetics) and most importantly, it's not being rushed out the door.

As for Earthworm Jim, it's a bold move releasing a sequel to a beloved franchise on a brand new console no one owns yet. Super risky decision, but if it pays off, it'll be well worth it.
