Earthworm Jim is getting a new game...as an exclusive on the Intellivision Amico

k6vB1by.png

Yet another franchise revival is on the way, as Earthworm Jim will be getting a brand new game, 25 years after the original release of the 90's classic. It's also a good reminder that the Intellivision Amico console is slated to release in October 2020, as this game will be launching as an exclusive to the platform. Bringing together the 10 members from the first game's development team, this will be the first time they'll have worked together on a project in over two decades.

A 20-minute livestream will occur on May 4th, where the team will explain a few more details about the game. Tommy Tallarico, composer for the series, current CEO of Intellivision, and the man behind the creation of the Amico, had this to say about the reveal of "Earthworm Jim 3"

We have been talking about this moment for many years, it’s a dream come true to finally get the entire team back together. We’re looking forward to sharing a small part of our reunion and initial design meeting with fans from around the world. Intellivision Amico is designed to bring friends and families together and we are excited for fans and those just being introduced to the series to get a first look as we kick-off the design of the game.

I was just thinking about the new Intellivision the other day and was wondering if any news on their new console had surfaced...
...indeed it has and it's great news!

BTW, if anyone wants to play the original Earth Worm Jim, I highly suggest doing so on the Sega CD. [WARNING: Spoilers!!!]

If Doug's not involved then it's not Earthworm Jim. They should just sell the rights already, they've been sitting on the IP and doing nothing with it for years. All of the good people have already left Interplay, all they have now is intellectual property and brand recognition.

On one hand, it's great to see Earthworm Jim get some attention again, after a long period of relative stagnation.

On the other hand, why this console, out of all consoles? I suppose they want to do a soft re-introduction to the series, but don't they want people to actually play their game in the first place? A new EWJ game is nice, but it's not exactly the deciding factor in what will move units. Heck, any console that focuses solely on 2D graphics in 2019 is pretty much dead in the water.

IDK how to feel. I'm psyched to get a new EWJ game, but on a cash grab console? I never even knew about this console.

Or the PC using a VM. The Sega CD version has inferior colors and sound effects to the PC version.

Does this version contain all the extras from the Sega CD version that the HD version left out?

I am interested just to see how all this plays out. I will more than likely buy the system, but then again I wan an Intellivision owner multiple times through out my life, and even now have an At-Games unit hooked up to my old Cathode Ray Tell-Lie-Vision.

With as much passion as the guys behind this are backing this with, I would really hate to see them fail. I believe they are taking a unique and intelligent approach to things, and I'm curious what they will be announcing next. If it does fail though, then AmandaRose will be correct in that it will more than likely end up being ported to other systems, or at least I'd hope... assuming it lives up to the glory of the original.

Yup, it's based off the Sega CD version, has all the content, levels, just higher quality sound effects and a much better color palette. Nothing was cut, just hard to run without using a Windows 95 VM.

but on a cash grab console
I think if it was a cash grab console, they would have shoved out a $50 box a year ago and called it a day. Why actively try to get the original developers for a game back together, just for a "cash grab" on a dead IP? And why charge a fairly premium price for it, and take at least two years to create it? Certainly, this won't be a major contender for attention, but I don't think it's being made just to poach on...Intellivision nostalgia...lol

I mean, I would like this game to be a timed exclusive, and not a permanent exclusive. Is that such a bad thing to hope for?

That would be ideal, but I think it's an exclusive *because* it's the Intellevision CEO "getting the band back together", thus it's all funded and paid for the purpose of being a draw for the new console. And it worked--it made everyone go "oh that's awesome--wait an intellevision what?" and now people know it exists.
