Ok, tried to check around but to be fair it's a bit hard to go through the 296 pages, so apologies if it's been answered already.

Tried to emulate FFVIII on PCSX ReARMed but couldn't find any way to increase resolution and seems sound is still choppy, is this the best it can get? (which I'm happy with but wanted to double check, using at present my own BIOS dumped from an old Spanish PS1)

Secondly it seems it can't identify memory cards whatsoever, is there a way to "enable" those?

Many thanks!

Enable threaded audio (drivers) and threaded video (Video option).
As for the resolution and mem cards thing, I am not sure, I'll check in a bit.

You might need to overclock the CPU for some games, using Retroarch's built-in option.

PSX Rearmed uses software rendering for its 3D, and as you noticed barely plays games fullspeed. So I would not pursue increasing the resolution as its unlikely to be playable. You can use some shaders to blur the blockiness, i like what "advanced AA" does for polys but it can blur text/UI somewhat.

Sick, thanks for the help, sound it's perfect now, and tried the shader and looks decent!

Any luck on the memory cards? working with savestates at present, but could be useful to have standard memory cards showing.

Many thanks for the help!

I didn't have to do anything to get in-game saves working in FFVIII. I'm using a psp eboot/pbp that combines all discs, dunno if that matters.

Should I just assume that with FW 8.0 that there's going to be problems with Retroarch? A number of things have been going wrong ever since I began using FW 8.0 and Atmosphere 0.8.8, even with a clean start on my card. Tried to get the settings back as it were, like enabling threaded audio and video.
  • Retroarch won't restart when requested (it exits to HBL)
  • Trying to update Assets from within Retroarch has sometimes caused an error midway through, throwing me back to the Home Menu. Not all times though.
  • Overclock settings state "0" for the current clock, and selecting any option won't change it (that's already been mentioned as not working).
  • Scanning/Importing works, but for NES games, many games are not scanning into the playlist. Was fine before.
  • Nestopia doesn't seem to work at all. Loading a game with the Nestopia core causes the system to get stuck at a black screen (though at this point I can still press the Home button and close the title to an error so I can load back to HBL via title redirection).
  • Mupen64Plus-Next seems slower, even for games that were fine before the FW update when left on stock performance and recommended settings. Also it seems the backbuffer doesn't get cleared at times where it should.
  • Loading games via Load Content has caused many games to not load, whereas loading games via playlist that have been scanned/imported in work fine.

Alright, further attempts to use Retroarch are showing even more problems, mainly loading games even for other platforms. Was just trying to play some SNES games with SNES9x (not 2010). Some work. Others just sit at a black screen, locking it up until I press the Home Menu and close it. Even some that were working at one time will then lock up later, almost like it's random.

Did I do something wrong with my installation? I'm on FW 8.0, having used the site SDSetup to put together a package with Atmosphere 0.8.8 and Kosmos 12.1. I downloaded the latest Retroarch nightly manually. My method for RCM is through the SX dongle + jig, loading SX OS, then going to Options, and loading the Hetake payload (4.10). I launch HBL via title redirection (holding the R button).

This was the same method of installation and execution I used prior to FW 8.0 to get into Retroarch, and I never had these kind of problems back then.

I've done this, memory save will work, just make sure the name of the .srm file matches the eboot file.

Not working for me I got Lunar and when I first got it it was in a folder named EBOOT.PBP, I went ahead and changed it to Lunar.PBP and put it on my sd card. Then I changed the srm to Lunar.PBP.srm but it doesn't read anything. Am I doing it wrong?

Just to note, the overclocking *should* be fixed in the latest nightly, or maybe an upcoming one.
No i got a shitload of other things to do before we can update the toolchain.

Should just be Lunar.srm. You're not supposed to dupe the other file extension.

Well, after tinkering a bit it seems that the file name was too long for the memory card file, renamed it to "FFVIII Disc1" both the .srm and the iso and now it detects the memory card ingame with no fuss, leaving it here just in case it happens to someone else in the future!

Should just be Lunar.srm.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

So when it's a PBP and it's time to go from disc 1 to disc 2 does it just swap automatically or?

In the quick menu there's disc control. Use the cycle tray status command, exit the menu so the game can recognize the disc eject, then back to that same menu, change the disc number and cycle tray status, exit menu and it should work.

You need to swap the discs again whenever you start retroarch, especially from a save state. When restoring from a save save state I usually find I can just enter menu, tray swap, pick disk, tray swap, and the game will never notice that the wrong disc was in there.

Fat32. Made the "switch" soon after hearing what was going on with Exfat.

Broken installation and settings.
My method of installation has basically been taking the most recent Kosmos/Atmosphere bundle from SDSetup and grabbing the RA nightly, then extracting them onto the root of my card. That's it. I'll give the bare minimum configuration a try, and I'll also try another card just so I won't mess with my main one while I figure this out.

Different card, minimal configuration, same issue. Sometimes while in portable mode, I can't even navigate Retroarch's menus with attached joycons (and no other controller was used since a cold boot). I almost want to restore my 7.0.1 FW backup (after backing up my FW 8.0), just to see if I still have the same problem. Do 7.0.1 and 8.0 have the same burned fuse count?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
