Microsoft launches new all-digital Xbox One S edition next month

While we look to the future of what both Microsoft and Sony have up their sleeves for their next console, that doesn't mean that this generation doesn't have anything left to give. Microsoft has announced the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, which as the name implies, is a version of the system that includes everything except the disc drive. Targeted as a budget model for those that prefer forgoing physical media, the All Digital will retail for $250, a full $50 less than a standard console. It'll also come with three first party games; Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, and Forza Horizon 3. If you're interested, you'll be able to pick up an Xbox One S All-Digital Edition when it releases next month, on May 7th.

What's the point of it being an Xbox One S? It took out the 4k UHD Blueray Drive the biggest selling feature. Could of just been an Xbox One.

Also it's Xbox One SADE. Not SAD ya simps.

Why would someone pay $50 for a disk drive if they never intend to use it?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

They arent getting rid of the version with the drive, dont worry.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

All they did was take out the disk drive that many gamers dont even use anymore, what are you expecting them to do? Options are good imo :).
the entire marketing play of the xbox one s was that it could read 4k bluray discs, so that that away and its just a normal xbox one lol, you can buy an used xbox one or xbox one s with a disc drive preety damn cheap, this has basicaly no sale value, if it was very very cheap then maybe but for the price you can get the ones with disc dive cheaper even new if you get a promotion...

So, yeah. It could have been smaller or could have given us more hard drive space. This just looks like they just wanted to get rid of any leftover xbox one s.

I just looked on Amazon.com, you can already get the disc equipped system with a game for less than that price.

Edit:

I just hope they don’t discontinue the s model.

yeah i was looking at it too...
230 € -> no Disc + Forza Horizon 3 + Sea of Thieves + Minecraft
199 € -> Disc + Forza Horizon 4

wow... that all digital is soooooooooo bad....
the only good thing is that you got a lot of free Space in the console in case there will be a hack in future... like using a second hard drive or whatever other mod you can make...

all digital is a no go xD

On the MS website it’s £200 to preorder.

Last January I picked RDR2 and BFV for 200, doesn’t help as well that I bought it in part because it was a BD player, otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered.

Right now looking around there are bundles around £200-230 and I regularly see various sales (e.g. console only for £160).

What’s funny was that on a different site someone was very dismissive saying ‘it wont be that price’ (based on the leak, which was off by just $10).

One of the reasons for my concerns about them dropping the s is the price otherwise seems suicidal for the SKU unless it’s an experiment to see if people will buy it anyway (to decide on the next gen SKUs).

Edit:

I can see it being more useful for people to make laptops/tablets out of, they’ve probably removed the headers and the software wont have support for them.

60% of people in here still totally oblivious to what this means.

No preowned market anymore, no videogame retailers, monopoly on game sales (you know that the 60 USD price point is not market made, right, because it plummets 2 weeks after every game release as soon as used copies hit the market), you paying for the distribution infrastructure, at no price benefit, no emulation market in the future anymore if systems dont get totally owned like the switch, no "final state" of a game, no "going gold" schedule for dev studios (more bugs, more people not caring, we'll fix it later), ...

Videos have become commoditized, Netflix has been a huge loss in production quality (people still dont care though..), music has become commoditized, no one cares to aggregate or crawl for it any more "i just have spotify playlist slow jazz plz", people still like it though. No one likes all digital books for anything other than convenience (you could as well read a private amazon website, just from the what rights you are granted standpoint), people still like convenience though.

Here is a thought, you already could have convenience, AND a disk drive. Wow, so odd...

The problem is, that people associate disc drives with "old" and thats their entire argument. What they NEVER do is associate it which a bunch of ownership rights they NEVER will be granted again in a digital first economy.

60% if people are just plain dumb.

But Kudos to MS, for FINALLY doing the right thing and not "surprise" people with it in an intergenerational switchover. Like last time. Like what lost them the current generation.

Let people get a grasp of what it means not to own stuff anymore first, and then allow them to decide.

For example "we will make digital games resellable!" yeah, and you are the only vendor in a closed console infrastructure system. You can turn on one screw, and make the whole infrastructure more or less attractive. Then label the screw "money intake" to make sure even idiots relize what you have granted yourselves here.

But its the same as steam? Steam has market competition on the same system. Not only that but market competition by non DRM platforms. Now do that on a Playstation or Xbox. Sony Walkman, or Xperia phoen dont just play Sony Music, right? Maybe you would like to think about that as well? No? People are just plain idiots, arent they? Let me spell this out for you M-A-R-K-E-T M-O-N-O-P-O-L-Y.

They think disk is old, and have made up their minds already. You so stupid. :) Please get triggered. ;) (This be provocation to make you think.)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Here's another thought 50 USD off of no disc drive? Wow, thats 20 USD parts cost and 30 USD off for never being able to buy a preowned game in your life anymore. (Think two generations ahead. Who can turn on all the screws? No retailers anymore. That would like to have a say as well.). Off of a fixed price point for the console, that AGAIN isnt a market price...

I've interned at Microsoft once. 50% of their retail peoples month is talking about when Amazon or - well usually Amazon, violated their USP again, and that they have to bring other retailers in line again. So that the made up price point isnt violated long term.

Its fun that way.

People are stupid.

:)

Subjective feel on people for, and or against the "digital only" system in this thread. :)

Of course I get way more triggered by "I'm all for it" posts, so I remember those more vividly. ;)

edit: Also - love the "but downloading is faster than installing from disc" argument. Then they should make installing from disc faster, no? Like they've always done in the past (but games also have become bigger). The idea here is, that they cant lowball everyone on that front, if the "buys disks still" market is still somewhat significant.

But the real argument here is, that you are now fronting all their infrastructure costs, by paying your internet bills. And they dont have to care about trucks, storage and retail of games anymore. What price benefit do you get for that? Oh, none - well I see...

But the games all get better, with dev studios getting bigger all the time! Like look at Star Wars Battlefront, and Fortnight, and every other game trying to be Star Wars Battlefront, and Fortnight - arent those the bestest games evar? And then everyone buys a switch, because they still have a more varied ecosystem with smaller studios still being able to produce content.

You really loves you those blockbusters, dont ya? ;)

(And no, I don't think Indie is the solution, because they usually cant reach the same quality standards on "one dev and his wife". Allthough system sellers sure like to promote it that way.)

Only a matter of time until they go digital only.
Then its streaming. You can skip digital only. Google aleady says its not relevant. Streaming is where its at.
(Reason, much lower cost of entry for consumer. More people will try it. It will be more convenient, more people will stick. (If experience quality can be somewhat upheld.))

You can even stream parts of a game - just say, that digital only has to be always online as well. Then this is an anti piracy measure. Say its "anti cheating". Say - its the power of cloud.

No retail to fight on behalf of the consumer at all.

Buy your entry ticket for 10 hours of disneyland now. Of course on a subscription model, so you also pay - when you are not using. Easy. No disk tray at all.

(And with streaming, gaming preservation culture goes bye bye. (It even goes away with digital first, if we are honest, because its made entirely illegal. Not even the appearance of legality possible.) But youtuber culture will flourish. ;))

Who's gonna buy this? Yeah, it comes with some games, but for $50 more, you get one with *gasp* a disc drive!
If it was closer to ~$150 (without the games obviously), then I could see this being more reasonable
Well ...this allows them to charge whatever they like for the 'Disc Drive Accessory/Addon' for when the buyers realize they DO want a 'physical copy' of games when Microsoft servers go down

I doubt they will do that, instead they'll just say 'sorry' with maybe some token gesture 'here's a months XBL gold/Gamespass' if the servers do go down.

I'm not mad at this because ALL of my xbox one games are digital either through sales, or games with gold, and occasionally ill pick up games pass when its on sale. The only problem is I have no use for it either having got a special edition slim for $200, and a fat model for $90 used.

If it hits $100 used at some point I'd consider picking one up though.

Really they could have at least made it smaller and thrown at least a 2TB hdd in it, simply removing the disc drive just seems lazy as all hell for a system reaching the end of its generation.

To make it cheaper, because many still do use it and it is a very significant disadvantage? lol.
I'm expecting those who want an Xbox to go with the model that supports physical games.

Not a bad idea for those that prefer all digital anyway, they can save some space with a slightly smaller console.
It's not worth it for the price difference alone, but the (likely) size difference might make it worth it to some.
