Nintendo unveils Mario Odyssey & Breath of the Wild Labo VR compatibility

vr-kit-software-compat-trailer.jpg

With Nintendo's new Labo kit drawing closer, Nintendo has unveiled some interesting new content. Today, it was announced that Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are to receive updates making them compatible with their new VR accessory. The update to Super Mario Odyssey lets you play three new 'mini-missions' in VR, whilst the Zelda update seemingly allows you to play the whole game using the goggles. These updates will arrive on the 25th of April, two weeks after the release of the Labo VR kit.

I think that's the point. These are not intended for long play sessions - if you tried, you'd likely get motion sickness and all that because of the resolution and framerate. Having to hold it up to your face the whole time means people likely won't use it for more than a couple minutes at a time, so it becomes more of a novelty thing than a way to fully play through these games.

I just don't really buy that..... we want you to buy some thing that you can't really use made out of cardboard.

I think they'll set it to the point where it runs fine but looks like ass. So maybe ~360p, 180p per eye and they can get the screen's max framerate in VR consistently. Unfortunately I think that max is still 60, and anything below 90 is known to cause discomfort in VR. Third-person games usually aren't as bad in that regard, but again...just gonna look terrible to adult eyes, and potentially feel even worse for those somewhat prone to motion sickness.

360p for each eye at 27fps

That's vomit inducing right there
They definitely won't be running it in its native 720p, otherwise they'd be getting closer to 12 FPS. Rendering in VR is more hardware-intensive than typical. Who knows, though, maybe they're using some Nvidia re-projection software to make it run better than it rightfully should. If that were the case, however, I'd think they'd have more widespread game support, and at least include an f'in strap for the headset; cardboard or not.

I don't really understand the split resolution. Like the screen is 720p then isn't both eyes will see 720p? Why 360p?

Hohoho, vomits be a spewing me thinks!

There's no way the switch can run BotW at a decent frame rate and resolution for vr. Not without some mad overclocking.

I mean it's interesting, but I think they've spent too much time thinking of they could, instead of if they should.

That will be great. I'm sure they created a new innovative rendering filter that will surprise most of the grumpy voices

Even I know this is a stupid idea but... I'm going to be the wise one here and hold my verdict until it's released. I'm not the kind of guy that "shoots first, ask questions later."
