Nintendo unveils Mario Odyssey & Breath of the Wild Labo VR compatibility

vr-kit-software-compat-trailer.jpg

With Nintendo's new Labo kit drawing closer, Nintendo has unveiled some interesting new content. Today, it was announced that Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are to receive updates making them compatible with their new VR accessory. The update to Super Mario Odyssey lets you play three new 'mini-missions' in VR, whilst the Zelda update seemingly allows you to play the whole game using the goggles. These updates will arrive on the 25th of April, two weeks after the release of the Labo VR kit.

Well, they'd have to really lower the resolution to even get the framerate anywhere near non sickening for both of those games.
Perhaps it'll be limited to very few sections and area's in the game with a ten second time limit for safety.
Those labo minigames, sure thats specialized and "for kids" I can see them getting away with that but I'm not sure how they expect this to work without tons of issues. (hope no one gets hurt from this, especially kids)

I do hope to see third party Virtual Boy style visor shell complete with a stand and USB/HDMI ports, pretty much a dock in the shape of a Virtual Boy with a switch for handheld VR mode and TV mode while plugged in.
Heck thinking about that I kinda want to make one myself even if it's just as a novelty dock.
Homebrew wise I'm sure someone will port over a virtual boy emulator with VR labo support, kind of a no brainer. (nintendo won't do it anyway)
Virtual Boy would still be better on the 3DS heh, if only. :/

I'm not 100% on this, but you could probably fit Switch into a few of the Google Cardboard headsets. Assuming you wanted to save some money and perhaps get something a little higher-quality, anyway:

https://vr.google.com/cardboard/get-cardboard/

Whether they require verification that you own Labo before unlocking the VR support for these games, I'm also unsure on, however.
Hopefully that’s the case but if anything I think you could just buy cardboard piece for $20 or something, I got to look at the prices, I wouldn’t buy the whole $80 set.
Edit
Never mind about that $20, I just seen the cheapest from Nintendo is $40, from what I seen your stuck buying more than just the card board glasses.

So here begins the market for reasonably priced 3rd-party VR goggles for Switch. I hope anyway.

If this doesn't sell VR, nothing will. At least they are on full experiences...but I dunno, low FPS and low res VR.....I mean, I could barely VR on an Moto G6 Play....I dunno about the switch.

Watching the video in the linked source, it seems to say that only three kingdoms in Mario are ToyCon VR compatibile.

In any case, it looks as though you'll have to hold the whole system up to your face the entire time like a periscope, who the hell wants to do that? Imagine the strain in your arms or the stupid positions you'll have to sit in to keep up a marathon session.

I think that's the point. These are not intended for long play sessions - if you tried, you'd likely get motion sickness and all that because of the resolution and framerate. Having to hold it up to your face the whole time means people likely won't use it for more than a couple minutes at a time, so it becomes more of a novelty thing than a way to fully play through these games.
