First trailer for 'Dragon Quest' CGI movie released

dragon quest your story.JPG
The video game-to-movie adaptation saga continues and this time it's Dragon Quest's turn. The revered JRPG series running since 1986 will get its very own big screen adaptation later this year, and unlike the live action-CGI mashups like POKÉMON Detective Pikachu and Sonic The Hedgehog, this one will be fully animated. Titled Dragon Quest Your Story, this movie is based on the story of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride which released on the Super Famicom in 1992 and got a Nintendo DS version in 2009.

Dragon Quest: Your Story is set to release in Japanese theaters this August 2nd. There is no word of an international release at the time of writing but would you like to see it come to Western theaters from what you saw in the trailer?

Maybe because that is not Toriyama's artstyle.

I think he means the game's art style is Toriyama's.

In any case, it looks pretty damn good, while I would have preferred it to be anime like the latest Broly movie this still looks fine.

Looks cool! I think I've only played the one DQ game, but hopefully I can watch this without feeling like I've missed anything.

Seems fine but this 3d animation does not fit well with Toriyama's drawing style.

Super missed opportunity. Seeing it in Toriyama's art style would have been amazing!

I'm so okay with it not being the usual art style.

I wouldn't be surprised if the movie ends up being totally uninteresting but I find the animation seriously looks great. Like, I wish more game-to-movie adaptations could look this good and avoid the whole "let's put these cartoon characters in the REAL world" thing.

the hype is real!

sure it loses something when it steps outside of the toriyama style, but still! so.......... is it gonna be the full game or just the 1st part? i imagine it might end either at or before being wed to ..... Bianca? maybe?

also i feel it may not be a 1 to 1, judging from some of the events in the trailer.

i'd follow it up with his children's quest ..... Dragon Quest "Their Story" maybe?

also maybe if they want to draw attention toward this movie, and pick a DQ hero with a unique style....... the Smash DQ character would be Purrcy (going by DQ Heroes) and his companion, maybe sorta ice-climbers style?

I'm not sure how Akira Toriyama's art style can be done in a CGI movie, but this style isn't so bad. It looks really nice

I'm a big fan of the series, though I didn't know we needed this. I feel it would make more sense if they made one for the first trilogy of games, the Erdrick saga or whatever it's called, because if the rumours about Erdrick or Roto making it to smash are true then it would fit more, not that it would affect the sales much imo.

Btw Dragon Quest V also got a release on PS2 over in japan, and it got a fan translation.

For some weird reason I feel the movie's style harkens to the PS2 versions graphics...

Seems like an odd name for a movie, would make more sense for a game where you're actually playing as the characters, rather than watching them like in a movie.

It can't. If they wanted to go with that art style, they would have had to make it an anime movie, but I think CGI has a broader appeal.
It does look nice. I wouldn't mind a game in the same style, it's not far off from what you can do with modern hardware.

Pretty excited for this, I never expected them to make a full Dragon Quest movie. I'm not surprised they based it off DQV considering it's the most popular one in Japan.

Toriyama art style is absolutely possible in 3D, look at Dragon Ball FighterZ
