New Minecraft update removes references to creator "Notch"

800px-MainMenu.png

A curious new snapshot build for Minecraft has added some bugfixes and some minor gameplay changes, but there's something a bit more noticeable in the patch notes. Most players of Minecraft will be familiar with the randomized phrases that appear on the game's splash screen, with some of them being references to Markus Alexj Persson, otherwise more well-known by his nickname "Notch". The update has specifically removed those references to Minecraft's creator, such as "Made by Notch!", "The work of Notch!", and "110813". Microsoft didn't give a reason for the removal, though it could potentially be due to Notch's divisive Twitter comments causing a rift, and possibly resulting in the company trying to distance themselves from his politics. The only remaining mention of Notch is in the game's full end credits.

not really, dude. it's your friend who wrote the extensive treatise on the guy, complete with citations. seems like he's been compiling it for much longer than I've been in this thread.
Did you ignore my response...? The process is usually more akin to:
  • Shitpost online/on discord
  • "Hey person X is being a dumb again"
  • Check it out
  • Mentally go "wtf"
  • Remember this incident
  • Move on with my life
All of the things I listed occured in the past three months, hence why they're fresh on my mind, but I know that he's done more that shoots past me at the moment.

That is just a personal opinion though, you're over simplifying it. His statements are attacks to specific groups. While yes, it has been blown out of proportion, what he said is still controversial.

Though i never played minecraft, because it wasn't my kind of thing, and because its default aesthetic seems to actively attack my eyes for some reason, what i could finf of what Notch looks like... I can't help but be reminded of the meme of that creepy dude that's always quoted as saying "install gentoo" or some other crap.

Except Richard Stallman isnt a right-wing retard, he is the literal opposite of it, and actually does good shit and not just spout garbage on twitter like Notch does.

That's not stallman, pretty sure he's just referring to something from /g/. Stallman doesn't endorse any particular distro afaik and would ideally use Hurd instead if Hurd weren't in perma dev hell.

It's a smart business move. Notch sold the game (for a lot of money) so MS is free to distance its game with such wide appeal from a guy with such controversial opinions. Still kinda sad to see it happen though. Haven't followed the supposed Twitter fiasco but I remember him being a pretty influential example of what an indie developer can do back in the day.
Personally I only barely looked at his Twitter account because I was pretty confused by some of the stuff I was reading about the issue, but yeah turns out he's actually pretty typical among game devs. As a game development student taking a reduced courseload I'm always in classes with new people, and I have to say that the stereotypes are pretty accurate. I even go to a progressive college and yet people still act that way. He's controversial from a business perspective, though completed normal from a gamer's perspective. I know people like that are a very loud minority and that most people who make or play video games are just regular people, but it seems that people like him barely constitute being called a minority. It's sad to see it happen, but it's not unexpected. And hey, we always have ConcernedApe (Stardew Valley) to replace him these days, so it couldn't have happened at a better time. Indie devs still have someone they can actually look up to without feeling ashamed.

I personally don't understand why these references are getting removed. He did make the game, right?
There are absolutely no references to his personal opinions, and those are completely unrelated to the game, which Notch made.

I don't say i agree with his opinions, but i definitely don't agree with the GBATemp dramaqueens forcing their opinions to other users..

Agreed, he created this game and founded the company that continues to work on it. He deserves credit for that.

He doesn't like trans people/gay people... So what? It's his opinion. Snowflake generation smdh.

It isn't that he voices his opinion, it's that he attacks people with them. There's a difference between disagreeing and trying to force your own ideas down someone's virtual throat. Like I said, it has been blown out of proportion, but there's no excuse for what he said.

He has nothing to do with the game anymore so I think it would be fine for all references to him to be removed.

Say a few years from now a movie studio decides to reissue a film, call it a remaster and maybe a light recut or "restoration of deleted scenes". Would you be OK with the director having their references stripped? Technically the director could ask (see Alan Smithee) but that would be an active measure.

While I would agree if it is someone else's product now and the rights have been sold then they could do what was done here... it is still something of a dick move.

Well if the director isn't affiliated with the company at all anymore it would make sense.

A curious way of thinking.

Generally for most creative/art types they are all about the credit, attribution, and similar such things, to snub someone in such endeavours generally being seen as quite bad. To retroactively remove someone from something... something mighty bad ought to have happened first. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-03-100-staff-cut-from-la-noire-credits for an example here.

Ether way love him or hate him his name is still there ... Just his splash text removed.

Where did he attack them? I missed that part.
