My wife is an ICU nurse. She has a co worker who bought a switch not long after the world wide rollout. She said they did not play it much before it mysteriously stopped charging. She said she will give it to me if I want it. Would you get it even though it does not charge?

That's true and from my research I discovered that it could be something as easy as the battery. One guy said he left his switch sitting unplugged for several months and decided to plug it in to charge and it would not charge.
So under use can ruin your battery?

Free is free

The joycons and dock are worth quite a bit even if the system never works again

That's true. Will be worth it just for the cons and dock.
You guys ever heard of the switch battery getting stuck on zero percent because it was unplugged for a long time?

Tbh only in context of autorcm

I can't imagine the battery would actually just die

Maybe the dock broke - when you get it, if it doesn't charge, try using a usb-c charger

i had a PSP battery that was stuck on say 1% & would not charge, what i did to revive it was i connected it to a led light until the last 1% stuck charge is completely drained & then the battery started working again.

Ok, and I have another switch that the kids use. Maybe I could even try that dock/charge cord.
Satel, I like your red light idea. LapCheong, Lol you never know, she may be a hard core hacker!
I think I would flip when I get it up and running if it's only been updated to 2.0 or 3.0

i dont think its been modded , so i say bad port, or used with bad charger/dock so maybe the power ic chip or the battery ic chip. may get lucky and find its just got super dead...

Let it charge for 6 hours. see if you can rcm it after charge

if you manage to get it working gues what you do first

Yeah you back it all up then you can fck with it .

That's what I'm hoping for. Just being super dead would be the bomb. Wow if it's just dead and on a super low firmware I'm going to offer to buy that nice lady a new ipatched unit to replace hers.

Just hope for the dead battery / bad battery being the issue. as everything else would need smt reworked. Aka the charging ic or usbc port replacement, but I’m sure there’s plenty of people on here that can and will help you out

Thank onlyd. I sure hope it isn't the usbc port. I do not know how to solder. I've been repairing my systems for years but that's one skill I never picked up.

A reflow? By the way, I like your toad treasure tracker gifs
thanks ... yeah a reflow is bascially heating up the solder balls/joints and reflowing the solder so it makes connection and again

soldering is adding solder with a heated tip

im not getting too technical but to fix a usbport you reflow it..
Heat up the area with a heat gun, use kapton tape around the port not to damage other parts of the board. its not easy, and without experience your best of asking someone else...

as the usbc port has pins under the port hidden and only a good reflow method will attach the port correctly..

My Buddy @mattytrog Can help you but he is based in the united kingdom.

Maybe some good person here in the usa can help you,

BUT HEY YOU HAVENT GOT THE SWITCH YET..

some kind and wise advise to you

When you get the switch,do not do it alone do not try to fix yourself,
come on here tell members whats not working your process and what you like to do.
report what works and dont work..Il be more then happier to problem solve with you...

But as soon as you get it running, please for the love of god
BACKUP FIRST always....

Good luck speak to you soon

Thank you Canna and yes, I would definitely be outta my depth with a repair like that. I am thankful for all of the knowledgeable people here at gbatemp. Unless it's just a simple battery replacement I will not go it alone.
Lol, you said make sure I back it up first? Thank you for the advice that will DEFINITELY be the first thing I do. Kind of reminds me of the old days. Making a nand backup on a Nintendo wii. I did several of those and it didn't seem all that complicated but the switch does. On the Wii you didn't have all those keys to deal with.

Free is free.
You can send it to this guy: https://tronicsfix.com/products/nintendo-switch-repair
Repair cost will probably be $99. Depends on what the fault is.
He has a YouTube channel if you want to see his work. He is pretty experienced with tiny soldering.
