Indie game Crypt of the Necrodancer gets spinoff called Cadence of Hyrule, features Zelda characters

The surprise final reveal from today's Nindies Showcase was for a rather unexpected crossover. Brace Yourself Games, developer of the rhythm game Crypt of the Necrodancer, and Nintendo will be working together to release a new title called Cadence of Hyrule. Link and Zelda will be playable characters in this game, where you will be able to fight classic Legend of Zelda enemies to the beat of some of the series' most memorable songs. Mixing Crypt of the Necrodancer's gameplay with music, characters, and levels from Zelda, Cadence of Hyrule will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch this spring.

In the latest rhythmic action-adventure from Brace Yourself Games, you can enjoy the gameplay of Crypt of the NecroDancer in the setting of The Legend of Zelda series. As Link – or even as Princess Zelda – you’ll explore the randomly generated overworld and dungeons on a quest to save Hyrule. Every beat of each remixed The Legend of Zelda tune is a chance to move, attack, defend, and more, so stay one step ahead of each enemy and boss…or face the music.

From modern-looking Lynels to the Hyrulean Soldiers of old, you must master the instinctive movements of each pixel-art enemy, and strategically outstep them in rhythmic combat. Equip yourself with an arsenal of iconic The Legend of Zelda items, as well as the spells and weapons from Crypt of the NecroDancer. You must be prepared to face Hyrule’s most wicked bosses, which have been transformed by magic, granting them mighty, new forms.

A rhythmic action-adventure game in the world of The Legend of Zelda series
Explore the randomly generated overworld and dungeons to save Hyrule as Link or Princess Zelda
Use items from The Legend of Zelda series, plus spells and weapons from Crypt of the NecroDancer
Outstep legendary enemies and bosses in rhythmic combat
Keep the beat with 25 remixed classic The Legend of Zelda tunes

but why jumping and not walking looks dumb

You know what looks dumb? Someone who doesn't read the thread.

It's to match the rhythm based gameplay. You can't really have characters normally walk from space to space, it would take too long. You need a snappy movement to make sure it's easy to stay on the beat, and a hop is the best way to do it. The only real alternatives are straight up teleportation and a very quick slide, and neither of them seem like much of an improvement, especially when you get items or characters that move 2 squares without touching the one they moved over.

Wow, that does look good snes style.. shame about the jump animation.. guess they want the game to last longer by jumping rather than running around

Never heard of the original and I'm not into rhythm games (if this is one) but I'll try it out. The "old" Zelda soundtrack from the trailer sounded just f*cking amazing.

If it's anything like Necrodancer then it's sort of a rhythm game. All movement is tied to the music but it doesn't really feel like that's actually adding anything to the gameplay at least from gameplay I've seen (haven't played it)

My hype died a bit when I read rhythm game.. Hope it's good!
like Jdbye said, it's not a traditional rhythm game at all. The whole rhythm aspect mostly serves as a timer to keep the turns going in what is essentially a turn based game on a grid. There's even a character that ignores the rhythm aspect altogether, turning it into a straight up turn based dungeon crawler.

from what i've seen i don't classify this as a real rhythm game. rhythm games involve pressing buttons to a beat at the right time like them crappy just dance or guitar hero games this is not like that. the gameplay is similar to chocobos dungeon from what i can see. so it's really a turn based dungeon crawler (the best kind)

an actual nindy game i'm interested in gotta be a 1st :P

it is actually like that. you press the directional buttons in rhytm to move. if you miss the beat, you're not moving (but i think most enemies will) and if you keep the beat and keep on moving and attacking without missing it, you get a bonus on gold find such (gold buys you stronger weapons, keys, armor hearts and such), so you really want to be constantly in motion, while keeping track of the enemies and their moving patterns to move in and attack at the right moments.
also, every state is basically one song. so you cant just jump in a circle for a minute or two either.

the jumping is because you do play on a grid, like mystery dungeon games, but making characters 'walk' at that speed (the beat can get pretty fast) would look even sillier.
also, think of it as characters dancing to the beat instead of walking

So how this game will be distributed?
Have we get base game 1st then buy this as DLC? or is this a standalone game beside Crypt of necromancer?
