I hope someone can help me.

I accidentally had my new 3ds xl make the system update today.
Now I get the message when starting the new 3ds xl An error has ocurred: Failed to apply 1 Firm patch(es).
If I keep select I come in the luma settings menu there is luma 8.1.1 update to 9.1 is not there when starting hold no chainloader menu appears.
Is there anything left to do or is the 3ds broken? I have no backup
Thanx

If I keep select I come in the luma settings menu there is luma 8.1.1 update to 9.1 is not there when starting hold no chainloader menu appears.
When Luma is loaded from CTRNAND it also searches for payloads on CTRNAND - ignoring payloads on SD.
I've already tried the 3ds starts from the internal memory luma 8.1.1 the SD card does not work
Did the SD work before the update right before the update? Did your 3DS show installed games? Anyway, time to check the SD:
  1. Copy all your data from the SD to a computer. Reformat the micro-SD to FAT32, 32kb cluster size, if bigger than 32GB and using Windows with guiformat.
  2. Check your micro-SD Windows, Linux, OS X.
    • If you get any errors replace the SD.
    • If you get no errors copy your files back on the SD, including boot.firm from latest release of Luma.
Also try a different, FAT32 formatted micro-SD with only boot.firm on it.

Not work
The SD card was still running before the 3ds the latest update had time that nothing works what I put on the SD card
Luma 8.1.1 Does not work with the latest update and as long as I can not update luma ctrnand will probably not do anything

You can try section VI again, see if it rewrite the boot.firm on the CTRNand.

  1. Launch GodMode9 by holding (Start) during Boot this not work Come back to the error message
  1. Copy everything off your SD card onto a computer.
  2. Reformat the SD card with MiniTool Partition Wizard (free edition) with these settings:
    • Format: FAT32
    • Cluster Size: 32 KB
    • Partition: Primary
    • Disk: MBR
MiniTool Partition Wizard Software Tutorial Guide
    1. Delete Partition
    2. Initialize to MBR Disk -or- Convert GPT to MBR Disk (if it's in GPT Disk)
    3. Rebuild MBR
    4. Create a New Partition [ Create as: Primary | File System: FAT32 | Cluster Size: 32 KB ]
  3. Full Write + Verify the empty card in H2testw. Do not skip this step.
  4. If the card passes the test, delete the *.h2w test files.
    • If the card failed hardware inspection, replace it and go back to steps 1 or 2.
  5. Download the CFW starter kit found here. Extract the files onto the root of SD card.
    • Do not add back your main setup at this moment.
  6. Insert the SD card into the 3DS, turn on the system, and hold the (SELECT) button.
  7. You should see Luma3DS v9.1 configuration. If you do, use these settings:
    • luma_config.png
  8. You will need to follow this up with Updating B9S and Finalizing Setup.

this is exactly the same problem i wrote about a couple of days ago but have a mac so can't test it? when i click on f3 it just crashes
After you copy everything off the card, you can reformat the SD card with:
  • GodMode9 → (HOME) button → More... → SD format menu → No EmuNAND → 32KB Clusters (choose 64KB Clusters if your card is 128 GB or bigger) → etc.
Test the card with F3X if you have a Mac.

Nvm, I forgot to take into account you can't boot the 3DS because you probably never setup Luma3DS on CTRNAND.

From my brief encounter with OSX years ago, I think whatever it's default disk manager program, it does reformatting flash memory in FAT32 but in GPT disk (General Partition Table) versus the required MBR (Master Boot Record).

If you have another SD card that's 32 GB or smaller, you might be able to reformat it in FAT32 + 32 KB Cluster Size + Primary Partition + MBR disk using the Mac version of SD Memory Card Formatter. You go through the motion of checking that secondary, empty card with F3X and Updating B9S with Luma3DS + GodMode9 installed CTRNAND. You then reformat the 128 GB card in GodMode9 and F3X test that card in Mac before using it with your migrated card setup.

Remember to F3X test those cards if you don't want the surprise of a fake one corrupting your data down the line.

If all else fails, do you have Windows bootcamp or know how to make a bootable Linux USB drive? I'm not familiar enough with Mac in recommending software that does reformatting storage drives.

Im currently away from home and keyboard.

If your 3ds is hacked with b9s cfw, it will first try to boot from sd card with whatever named as boot.firm.

It will not boot if the card cant be read and there isnt luma already installed on nand, thus the on off blue light.

A quick google search states you can reformat in fat32 mbr using command lines or terminal (yuck!).

When i get back, ill try looking into cross linux/unix/mac/bsd software that does reformatting.

Another idea you might get away with is running guiformat with WINE. *shrugs*

I'm back at home.

???

Eh, wait a minute. If you can boot to HOME Menu as-is and assuming your 3DS is still hacked with A9LH or B9S type custom firmware, what happens when you turn on the system and press & hold the (SELECT) button? Does a screen like this appear?

luma_config.png

If that does not appear, you might have had another type of custom firmware like Menuhax or RxTool where updating the 3DS firmware removed it.

I think you had a really old cfw setup like Menuhax and lost it from the update. You would basically have to rehack the 3DS with permanent boot9strap CFW using the 3ds.hacks.guide. Sorry bud.

Unfortunately, I can no longer help you with finding a suitable linux/unix program that does flash memory reformatting. My backup computer/ HP netbook of 9 years that dual boots Win7/Linux Mint has recently died. Suspected cause of death is electric trickle from overcharged battery. RIP. :(
